this is really fucking up my program.
carry on...
-
Word. I'm on crutches and in pain constantly. :'(
-
mud, what happened?
wait, lemme read the bike forum (which I have disregarded lately)
gotta be a bike accident
RB
how long til you can go climbing?
-
I don't see anything obvious... wha happen?
-
NOTHING happened. Literally.
Here is an email I sent to a friend yesterday (so I don't have to retype everything):
========
Okay, so I came to work. Got busy. Then I felt that I wanted a shower to clear my head, so I went to the gym and did a 20minute light run on the tread mill just to break a sweat. Then I went to lunch. Came back to my desk and started working. So far, nothing abnormal at all. All of a sudden (a little before 2:30pm when you sent your first email), boom! Some severe pain just flared up in my left ankle and it bent me over. I was just typing at that time and didn't even wiggle my feet! Anyway, I hopped to the breakroom and grabbed an ice pack. No relief. It got worse. For two hours, I tried to ice it, massage it, gently bend it. Nothing worked. It just got worse and worse. So bad that I was shaking and sweating, and feeling nauseous. I hopped to my manager's office and told him that I needed to go to the Urgent Care. I was going to drive myself because Erik just called me earlier saying that he was feeling sick (again) and was on his way home to rest. But I wasn't sure if I could go the whole way without passing out because it was just that painful. Luckily, our administrative assistance lives in Palo Alto and offered to give me a ride.
After I got dropped off at the Urgent Care, it was the usual story -- endless wait at the waiting area, in the little room for the nurse to come, then for the doctor, then for the X-Ray technician, etc. etc. I was on the verge of tears the whole time and might even have shed some. The doctor could not see anything wrong from the X-Ray and told me I need to see a podiatrist tomorrow. She sent me home with crutches (I need them because I couldn't put any weight on the foot) and pain pills.
While I was waiting, I had my iPhone and a book, but I managed to read the emails quickly, but other than that, I was in such pain that I could not function as in reading a book or typing emails. I think the pain pill has kicked in, and I'm in a comfortable position in the couch, so I feel better now.
=========
Weird, isn't it? I'm going to see a podiatrist in a hour. I wonder if he can figure it out. Pain pills are a godsend. I tried to stick it out and postponed taking a pill this morning and the pain came back so bad that it brought tears to my eyes. I gave in.
I'll be super happy if I can walk normal now, let alone climb or ride.
-
Ouch!
I once had an ankle sprain that I couldn't walk on the next day. The day after that, it was fine... Crazy stuff, I hope yours is like that too!
-
Let us know what the podiatrist says. My brother is a podiatrist and does a bit of climbing and mountain bikes.
Good Luck Jeff
-
OUCH, good luck mudworm. I've got a great podman out of Palo Alto Med. Sports oriented.
ms
-
whoa!
-
Bummer, hope it gets better quickly. It's worse when you don't even do anything to deserve it!
-
The verdict at this point is a stress fracture. She gets an MRI in the morning. Looks like she is out for a minimum of a Month.
-
that really f'd up her program.
need me to pick you two up a 1000 piece puzzle?
-
A little bummed that I won't be able to do the Low Key Bohlman ride in two weeks, but oh well, life happens. I was thinking of taking up knitting.
The doctor said that the stress fracture could be accumulative and at a random moment, the body's chemical and biological reactions just pushed it over the edge. Will know more after he sees the MRI. There is one hour after every three hours that the pain becomes unbearable when the previous pain pill has worn off and the next one has not kicked in. Being a type A person, I follow the instruction and take a pill every four hours.
-
OUCH, sorry to hear the diagnosis and luck on the healing.
-

And some ribs from CostCo!
-
And some ribs from CostCo!
Ewwwe, why not get some preformed hamburger patties and candy corn too.
-
You haven't tasted mudworm's ribs..
-
You haven't tasted mudworm's ribs..
true....too full after the candy corn.
Just ate BB Ribs at Henry's in San Jose Monday. Hadnt been there in like, 15 years. Best ribs I've had, hands down.
-
Um... don't mean to scare you guys, but the doctor just called and said that the radiologist did not find stress fracture. He still needs to see the MRI to confirm himself when I meet him tomorrow, but he wants to run some blood test on me too. I told him when I first saw him yesterday that I got a Dr. House case for him. It seems that I did. Well, it could be just nothing. We'll see...
-
Mud, now you got me worried! I hope this makes it good news though as stress fractures arent a party in themselves.
-
Don't worry. It'll be all good. It's just an ankle. Thanks though.
-
It's just an ankle.
3 screws in my left ankle from a bad fall in Jtree. None in my right but the torn ligaments still rankle me.
-
First, mudworm is too skinny to have good ribs for BBQ, and I think Mr Mud might object. I on the other hand would be a delicious pork rib. Year of the Pig, yo!
Second, I was thinking the same thing about House. Great show. At some point they'll 'jump the shark' and I'll stop watching till then...
Third, early onset osteo? How is your calcium intake Dr. mudworm?
-
House MD is the only TV series we will get on DVD. Have just gone through Disc One of Season Five. It seems to have deteriorated from previous seasons (not as funny), but I haven't found another one I'm interested in.
Well, I can't make ribs when I'm hopping around. Sorry F4.
No idea about Calcium intake. I haven't been taking supplements either. Will see what the doctor says after blood test.
Squiddo, despite the bad ankle, you still live a life style more active than 98% of the population. So, that again reassures me an ankle is just an ankle. :)

But I drink like a fish mudworm. LIKE A FISH
-
put down the scotch and step away from the bottle!
-
To many impurities.

Ouch, that's like, a time out or something.
-
Well, I can't make ribs when I'm hopping around. Sorry F4.
Well, Munge can buy the ribs. And you can share your recipe with me and I'll cook em.
The Dr will figure it out. Either way fracture or no fracture, rest will help it.
Or there's something pressing against a nerve. Rest would help it.
-
To many impurities.
Pure as the driven snow baby!
-
And you can share your recipe with me ...
Dude, there is no secret there! It's Alton Brown's recipe (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/who-loves-ya-baby-back-recipe/index.html).
-
Feel sorry for that kid.
Pure as the driven snow baby!

The phrase LOL is overused, but I did laugh out loud at that one. "Should we have mudworm for dinner? I don't know, she's kinda skinny."
-
hah!

I sure hope all the mountain lions and coyotes out there think the same way. Did you read it in the news (http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jly_E_yi2GipAiBHZYbTpPlJSuaQ) yesterday that a young female hiker was killed by coyotes?

No fear, CANADIAN coyotes are way more badass

Blood test results are back. Possibly Rheumatoid Arthritis. Will need to see a rheumatologist ASAP. I hate diseases where the spell check marks the word red even though it is the correct spelling.
At least we are narrowing down the cause.
-
thanks for the update mudworm. Waiting is the hardest part and positive thoughts from across the lot from Mr Mud.

positive thoughts from across the lot from Mr Mud.
Yeah, he needed them. I don't know why, but he sounded a little sad when I talked to him on the phone. Work must have gotten to him.
-
RA, hrm...
any new updates, second opinions?
positive thoughts to the mudsters,
Munge
-
Thanks! The earliest appointment I can get with a rheumatologist is on Thursday. When I go in, I'll grill the doctor with questions!
It's improving. I'm off the crutches now. Walking hurts, but not too bad. I just walk very slowly, like Mr. Mud. I usually walk 5x faster than him, and it used to cause tension from time to time. Not any more. ;D
-
Yeah, Mudworm says the pain is not to bad.
Keep in mind this person told the Doctor "No" to local anesthetics when he was going to take a scalpel and a scrub to her.
It took an entire Emergency room to get her to change her mind.

OH MAN....always take the anesthetics!!
-
When it was all done he wrote her a script for pain meds.
Mudworm - No thank you. She walked off, the script still in the Doctors hand.
-
uh, Mudworm, you know you can get top dollar for those scrips...
hahahah, just kiddin, I think that's a felony actually.

NICE, again though...always take them. If not for yourself then for your first aide kit. This weekend I helped a dude out in Demo that went over the bars. It would have been nice to have offered him something more than a beer and a fist full of Advil. Some pain was involved I could tell. And no it wasn't from giving away beer.
-
Well, we all know Mud likes to BS, don't we? I cried like a baby last week when the pain got too much! Though, I do end up having a bottle full of Vicodin untouched. Did I hear top dollar? Of course, I don't want to break any law you know. ;)

Vicodin? Psaw....that's like candy. Perc's are where it's at. I say that with a smile as I hate drugs. Again, just for emergencies.
PS, I do like me some booze though.
-
Okay, it's been confirmed -- I WILL die someday.
Here is my full update (http://www.mxi2000.net/mudworm/2009/11/rheumatoid-arthritis-or-not/).
-
glad to hear the prognosis. that pic of your foot is gnar!
-
See, rest and only rest is the best cure....
Give it time and things will heal.
Eric needs all the help he can get. While you are down, he can keep training.
5,000 piece jig saw puzzle??
-
The Doctor told her to take it easy and let it heal.
So she gets up at 5:30 and goes Mountain Biking this morning.
-
Y'all can tell Mr Mud was not happy about it, can't you? A promise is a promise is a promise. When the doctor's message reached me, it was already too late for me to call to cancel the plan. Admit it! You would have done the same! :)
-
Hey mudworm,
Let me know if you're up for AM rides.....I'm down with the short days and all
-
Nope. Not worth the risk.

Have you forgotten? We have two cats at home.
-
mudworm, as a friend, seriously, go easy. You're hard core, but maybe you don't know it. The body wasn't meant to beaten into submission.
seriously, don't push it if you're not feeling it.
ok, nuff of that pedantic posting mungefoolery. how did the ride go? any swelling?
Sincerely,
Dr. Munge
-
No further swelling, Dr. Munge. But I'm icing it right now just to be good. It was a gorgeous morning to be on the trails. Squiddo, I'll be up for riding at Skeggs or Waterdog some mornings once the boss clears me.

Love the smell of skeggs in the morning. Rode there alone a few times at sun-up.....kinda scary. Go easy on me as I'm a big wuss. I'm still afraid of the dark.
