One of my favorite climbing stories occurred on this summit on this trip. Dave and I climbed pretty hard on Dark Star. Packed in the night before and got on the route at first light. We did around 35 pitches up to 5.10b and were on the top with plenty of light left. We felt pretty bad-ass. But the summit register contained an entry by another climber: "I left the car this morning and climbed Dark Star. I've got to get down now, the clouds are building even though it's only 10:15 in the morning. Peter Croft." We were bad-ass indeed!

The least he could do would be to leave a beer or 6 up there. You'd think!

Gee, climbing pics dated back to 1995!? I have nothing to compete with that. But I also have Incredible Hulk pics from 4 years ago -- that's "back in the day" for me.

I got the best pitches on Red Dihedral.
(http://www.mxi2000.net/photos/p20050903/24v.jpg) (http://www.mxi2000.net/photos/p20050903/27v.jpg)

And also had a Hulk birth
(http://www.mxi2000.net/photos/p20050903/29v.jpg)

Back then, Mud and I were not even dating yet. So, after dinner before dark with some time to kill, we sat on a rock together (with the Hulk in sight and with a respectable distance between us). I read a book out loud and he just listened. Romantic in a non-romantic kinda way. Now that I think about it, I have not read Mr. Mud bed time stories again since.  :D

Calling Landshark, did you ever scan your old pics in?
Landshark used to have a cheezy slideshow that he would do at REI..sans Ama Dablam pics.

I might have to post up them Denali pics.

Picture Peak got its name because of its location in the background behind Hungry Packer Lake. It was always in the background of beautiful pictures of the lake (see the above photo, it's an example). Here's the reverse shot - Hungry Packer Lake from Picture Peak:

Oh, and I have to comment about the photos of the Red Dihedral crux pitch. Three photos taken in two different ways, "flat" toward one wall of the corner or another. Interesting.

I gotta repeat this one photo from Ruby Wall:

Look at the fresh "tracks" in the glacial snow below. As we were doing the approach three VW bus size chunks calved off from up high and thundered down to the glacier. Rock was pounding everywhere. Dave and I were in the left "tongue" of talus when this happened (left looking down, like the photo). One chunk, about the size and shape of a truck tire came tumbling and cartwheeling toward us (its track can be seen). It slowly lost momentum and fell over just 50 or 100 feet from us.

Biggest, baddest rockfall I've ever seen.

I just found these from a '99 trip to the Tetons with my bro. I had wanted to do the Black Ice & Exum with him....we ended up on the Owen Spaulding (can't remember why).

A priceless one of me (I think) taking a crap with the best view in the world at the Teton lower saddle camp.

Pat on the Owen Spaulding route. Usually 5.6 (I had soloed it before), but this time it was covered in verglass! It made it a whole new route.

Same belay as brad's photo with that big bird helmet!

Crux pitch, EARLY in the morning, already busted out the shades!

I really like this shot, big exposure at the last belay stance.

This is what 2 guys who just did the Queen in August during a 100+ degree heat wave, notice my eyes are shriveling into the sockets from dehydration, we brought 8 gallons of water!

Still, great route and pretty good climbing.

We did a family trip to Joshua Tree in spring 1998 with Skeltons. I still can't get over Katie in a backpack:

A friend of mine had an old pair of red, bell bottomed corduroy pants that didn't fit him. I used them for years (they were cut off me by the rescue personnel when I crashed and burned in the Valley in 1999). They were so not-lycra. Here I'm leading Bev's Tower at the Cookie in December 1998:

That takes me through 400 of the 500 slides I just had scanned. If there are any of interest on the last carousel, I'll continue. Meanwhile theres plenty of room for other people's photos.

Just finished four more days on the PCT with my two favorite girls (three really, Madeleine counts too). We did 55 miles in perfect to cold weather, including one 20 mile day. We're now at my sister-in-law's for the holiday. I'll do a PCT trip report later.

Meanwhile, I realized that I'd forgotten to post up the few scans that were worth posting from the last group of 100. An early Sierra summit for Katie (Black Mountain out of Virginia Lakes):

Oh, and Factor, now that I know where it is, that photo of me is on what we called  Outback Waggin' (while we thought it was an FA). I think that 3 of us that day had Subaru Outbacks. Turned out Jack had done the FA a few years before. He was totally gracious about the bolt I placed on his route (I did this, of course, without knowing the route had been done). He suggested I should leave it in place, which I did. But, obviously it was his to name.

It's been pretty cool on the site lately: some newer, younger climbers are posting and with great content.

Meanwhile one of my original climbing mentors, Charles Field (call him Footie though) is going through his old climbing photo collections. Some of the shots he's sending me as his "best" border on unbelievable - almost all of the climbers depicted are now 70 years of age or older. But they aren't that old in the photos he's sending.

Maybe some of these should serve as friendly, loving reminders to the younger crowd: you think your youth will last forever? Live it up while you can; these climbers did.

I'll start with one from 1978. Dave Harden (on the right, most of you have climbed with him), Charles Field himself (on the left, some of you have climbed with him), and Bart O'Brien back on the Valley Floor having just climbed the Grade V on Quarter Dome:

These three have all been climbing for over 50 years. And each has partnered with the others in climbing for over 50 years. They're all 71 years old or older.

You youngsters? Your time is coming.

Footie cleaning the last or second to last pitch on Mescalito, 1984:

One with a story. Per Footie: Dave & Ben Schiffrin on Lost Arrow Direct, 1981. I rappelled down to the notch with dinner and a fixed rope so they could do the tyrolean in the morning. When they didn't show up by late afternoon and I realized I had an extra length of rope, I rappelled out of the notch and found them. At first they didn't know I was there. I scared the shit out of them when I called out.

By the way, Ben is the author of the current Northern California PCT guidebook.

Dave and Bart on top of Fairview Dome (probably) early 1970s. Is it just me or does Dave's hair resemble that of a certain young poster here who is currently about the same age that Dave is in this photo?

Not really from "back in the day," but for comparison to the above. A 50 year time span between photos (and they're even in the same order, left to right):

As much leg as me, as much curly hair as Marco. All in one photo. What else are we seeing? Notice the climbing boots on Dave? Boots, not shoes.

Here starts a series of back in the day shots that are not of me, or Dave, Footie or Bart. The shots were supplied to me by a person who rarely posts here. He's promised to (try) to come on and explain/give dates for each shot.

Feel free to guess who's who as we wait for him to post (one at a time so he can just "quote function" my post and then put in his explanation):

And here's the one that some of us know (as a young brat instead of what he is now, an old brat):

I took 1 or 2 of those pictures.

The first one is part of a documentary on delayed puberty and how climbing is a great hobby while (still)waiting it out.

The second one begs for a discussion on not aging well and being in denial while transferring stuffing from the insides of a turkey to one's self.

The third one, you nailed it.

Not to defend Clink necessarily, but watch it F4. You may be younger than some of us. But you're definitely older than others here (no spring chicken anymore).

Waiting for more photos to post up.

I've seen the first two before and they are already on the site somewhere. The one of Geoff is pretty damn funny.

That’s Geoff on top of Charlotte’s Dome if I’m not mistaken. He climbed the “50 Classic Climbs” route in Puma tennis shoes.
Back when we were leading 5.9s Geoff tried Dead Babies 5.11a on The Apron and made it to the anchors with a couple falls.  A natural on slabs.
