Broken foot. He fractured his talus bone.
-
Hopefully that is a climbing type joke.
If not how did it happen? Climbing or skating?
If it is true heal up soon.
-
jeebus
-
its true. he is fine, but looks like 6 weeks out of action.
you know how it happened.... four wheels were involved, but it was a freak thing...
-
Dang, sorry to hear that! Heal up soon.
Actually, if you go to China, you'll be out of crutches within a week. Mud can tell you all about the magic.
-
True enough, go to China and get the magic patch.
Major bummer, all your weight is supported by that bone.
Heal up.
-
invalid without video
;)
-
No worries I always dab.
-
its rumored there might be video, but i didnt press the issue.
-
So has Lane gone to the dark side and forsaken climbing for a board or was he just trying to have fun?
-
and where is this debauchery taking place?
I'm off to sleep.
Straight shot from ID to home. 17/18hrs. Long day yesterday. ciao!
-
he has not gone to the dark side of bike riding. we were just going out to ride a few minor hills with Cole. Jeff was pushing hard uphill right out my driveway and lost balance and came down hard on the foot. the dr thinks he stress fractured it the last time he 'rolled it', so this was just a timebomb waiting to go off. suks for sure.
-
Oie, that is a definite downer. No glory involved. Heal up fast.
-
OUCH!!!! Heal up bud

wait a sec, this is probably just a ploy to get out of half dome

I'll step up and go with you. Just say when.
-
as soon as I drop this new 10 pounds of beer, steak and idaho potato weight I've gained.
-
Motive revealed? Is he skeered? Inquiring minds want to know....
Did he go out and buy a badminton racket?

Um, unless the guy uses his foot to write with, why isn't he posting here? Come on Lane, spit it out: more details. And, I want to hear who gets your climbing gear.

Yah, we need to know the details. Like were any farm animals involved? :o
Okay Munge, then I'll see you tonight.
-
Is Munge a Farm animal?
-
Just got back from SD late last nite. Doing a 90 minute walking tour of UCSD yesterday with my daughter was "interesting".
I will post pix of the x-rays and possibly the video when I get a chance. My work can't seem to live without me for more than 24 hours so I'm dealing with the stupidity that ensued yesterday at the moment as well as trying to locate a good orthopedist so I can get a proper cast on my foot (instead of the temporary splint I have now) as well as proper-sized crutches. They gave me kid crutches because they didn't have regular sized ones at the clinic. Now that's an arm workout!

He does like pigs...

Salad pretty much summed it up. Fell off his board in a weird way and landed hard on the foot. It was the same ankle that I rolled hard when Munge and I were hiking out of the Pinns a couple of months ago. The doc thinks that it is likely that I probably did the initial damage then - a hairline that had semi-healed (and I guess that explains why the swelling didn't go down for a few weeks). A time bomb to be sure.
And, I want to hear who gets your climbing gear.
To the first person that is willing to pay me $400 per cam, $100 per stopper, $75 per carabiner, and $50 per sling. Used ropes will go for the low low price of $999.99.

If I was scared about doing Half Dome, I don't think I would have chosen such an annoying way of getting out of it. I would just borrow one of the many lame ass excuses I seen posted on this forum.
-
I will sell you one cheap. I have have many that are unused. I can provide a discount on a slightly used one. I have great rates, many options available.

... trying to locate a good orthopedist so I can get a proper cast on my foot (instead of the temporary splint I have now) as well as proper-sized crutches....
SOAR (http://"http://www.soarmedical.com/") has always had great reputation. Dr. Oloff is the foot/ankle doc.
I know usually Insurance pays for the crutches (or the clinic just gives you a pair), but we do have two in our closet that I got for free and used for a few days last year. Perfect condition. It's a shame they are just sitting there and would be nice to be re-used. If interested, I can ask Mud to drop them off tomorrow. But it's an arm workout no matter what.

If I was scared about doing Half Dome,
Snake Dike is only 5.7, it isn't that scary.

Already did that one - simuled the whole thing with Noots.

Final word...
After spending most of the day back and forth between the orthopedist and the radiologist (needed a CT scan), the prognosis is in...I'm going in for surgery on Thursday. The fracture is wide enough that they need to put screws in to put the broken piece back into place (and will also clean up some tiny fragments that are floating around in the gap). 1 hour procedure, so no big deal. 6-8 weeks of recovery. May have to move the trip to France out.
Muds, thanks for the offer on the crutches, but I swapped for a pair at the orthopedist today so I'm all set now.
-
Wow, some serious injuries there, but the surgery should really fix it once and for all, I hope.
Just realized that we never asked (unless I missed it) -- left or right foot? I'm hoping left.
-
Dam, that's bad. If you need anything let us know.
Get extra meds. :)

Did they check your head too??

It is the right...commuting is going to suck. I guess I'll start taking the train. At least I will be lowering my carbon footprint. ;D
Did they check your head too??
They probably should have, but they probably wouldn't have found anything there.

Thanks for all of the support. Just keep me entertained on this forum. ;D

Heal quick, dude...

Shouldn't be too hard.
You'll get used to the train. The best part...you can drink on the way home! It's up to you if you want to drink on the way to work.
Can you still belay? ....just curious.
-
oh man, surgery? That sucks!!!
-
Can you still belay? ....just curious.
In the gym, probably after a week or so after surgery. The challenge though will be getting to the gym since I can't drive.
Outside might be tough for a while unless it literally is a drive-up crag.
I'm going have try to workout somehow over the next several weeks - I guess a lot of push-ups, crunches, and curls...
-
I think we can work with that.
Not driving sucks. Best trade in the suby and get fancy one like squiddo. I'm impressed how nice they are.
-

6 packs abs and Bratton will be begging for a belay.

Perhaps that should read...
Six pack or Abs

-
My abs look like they've had a few six packs these days.

REGRET NOTHING!!!!
-
wait a sec, was that the Mrs. laughing?
oh that's just grim.
-
She didn't quite realize the extend of the damage at that point...at least that's what she tells me.
-
Can't blame her, it looks like a light fall. The angle you hit at, or some such, must have been just wrong for that to break a bone.
Either that or she hates you.
-
ah man that sucks.... i was laughing at first too, i though he just smacked his arse at first...
-
oh man, the carnage is worse the second time I watch it.
I'll get the shotgun, we can put him down, take away his pain.
;)
-
Dont do me any favors...I'll settle for some single malt.
-
Just saw the doc today. He cleared me to start putting weight on the foot - either assisted by crutches (w/out the boot) or walking w/the boot. I'm supposed to start PT as well for 4 wks. Should at least be able to walk normally by the end of Sept. Probably nothing hardcore though for another few months.
-
kewl
-
Now the fun begins.

You can still belay...right?

As long as I don't have to hike in with a heavy pack or do a lot of scrambling on talus, scree, etc.
