Title: Climbing on Sonora Pass Hwy
Post by: mudworm on July 27, 2010, 12:40:32 PM
This weekend, Brad and Mr. Mud hiked around some crags, and with the addition of Joel, they also did some trailwork and brush cleaning. I rode my bike (http://www.mxi2000.net/mudworm/2010/07/riding-climbing-sonora-pass) over Sonora Pass on Saturday (and got stormed on), and on Sunday, I hooked up with Munge for some climbing. Knowing that thunderstorm was still a possibility, Munge chose a formation in the Chipmunk Flat general area for its proximity to the road.

Munge led me up a 5.6 crack and then set up a top rope on a 10c called Run Like Hell. It was a face climb. It took me a while to do that route because I was at first having a hard time seeing any holds and then having a hard time trusting them. Munge just cruised up. Very impressive! But before he reached the top, we were just commenting on how nice it was that the sun was behind the clouds and the temperature was perfect. Suddenly, lightening stuck above us and a dark patch of clouds peeked over the cliff like a monster and spit on us. I lowered him. We left the anchor and threw everything else in our packs and ran down to the truck. I didn’t ask myself what the rush was, but really, we were pretty much drenched by the time we reached the car anyway even though it was not too far away; we could have just walked slowly and the result would have been the same.

The storm passed us after 20 minutes or so, and then it was gorgeous again.

(http://www.mudncrud.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=51993&g2_serialNumber=2) It was nice when we arrived.

(http://www.mudncrud.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=52003&g2_serialNumber=2) Then it clouded up.

(http://www.mudncrud.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=52008&g2_serialNumber=2) And a bit more.

(http://www.mudncrud.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=52013&g2_serialNumber=2) Then it poured.

(http://www.mudncrud.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=52028&g2_serialNumber=2) It didn't take too long for it to be nice again.

The little climbing we did reminded me how fun climbing was. I really should do more of it soon...

because the safest place to be in a lightning storm is in the car. :)

any chance you got that one strike on First Buttress?  the shutter clicked right when the strike happened.

Waiting for the TR...

You want a TR for the drive? I work up at 6:45AM after sleeping a total of 8 hours in the previous 48. I stopped for coffee and a breakfast mac in Bishop where I noted the air was cool. Headed North where I dropped the partner off in Lee Vining. Grabbed a cappuccino in Bridgeport and then over the pass smoothly.

Great trip on a great route though I'm still sore 3 days later. Going car to car was different......liked not having to carry the big loads up the trail.

Seems like alot of work. Couldn't you have just gone bouldering in Bishop? Even the gym?

Now you are thinking! Sleep in, watch some TV. Take a nap on the couch.

Oh and...
You left out the part where you took a piss on the wheel of a silver Toyota Tacoma truck while going through the pass......

Sure...I break my freakin foot and THEN the Muds decide to do some climbing again (in SPH no less)...I feel slighted.

Squiddo - post the TR, damn you! What the heck did you do? I have to live vicariously through others right now, you know!

Uber, he went sport climbing in the Gorge. Lycra and all. That and he was pissing copper for 36 hrs. Too bad it wasn't gold.

Yah, what gives with the muds "actually" climbing. Maybe this is a new page they are turning?

Uber when you get back on your foot, perhaps we can hook up and go scrub a new line at Sonora.  I found a couple more good ones.

Uber will be busy on WW, unless of course we come to an agreement on price for services rendered. I can make you a pretty good deal on him since he needs lots of maintenance and has high mileage.

Nice TR, I have always wanted to do that ride, maybe this fall.  Thanks

(Note: Erik thought “ironic” was a wrong word to use in this scenario and he said it was “apropos.”)

It depends if you are looking at it from Contador's or Schleck's view point. It also depends on what you are trying to say about the situation. But I know what you mean.  :)

munge, sorry I didn't know you ever got any red x, let alone two! Now, are you talking about the pix in my post (the thread starter) or squiddo's post (one picture though)? Regardless, I can see all the pix, so I don't know what your problem is. I mean, your computer's problem.

I see!!! Thanks for posting the screenshot. There was nothing there. I had the empty [ i m g ] [ / i m g ] brackets because it used it as a template to post my pictures. Then I forgot to delete those two extra lines. They did not show up in my browser, so I wasn't aware they were there (and I just fixed it)! I use Firefox.
