Title: bushwhacking to Pipsqueak?
Post by: CruxLuv on January 03, 2012, 10:49:58 AM
Hi gang-

Going to head there this weekend but have friends that couldn't find the trail to get to it last time they tried.

Is there a trick/landmark for the trail head or is it just pretty overgrown?

There was some brush maneuvering as I recall, but if you come in from above on the trail and work your way back it's mostly brush free compared to other formations.

I head up to Pipsqueak Pinnacle occasionally for raptor monitoring, and from the High Peaks Trail, there isn't really a clearly defined access trail that I know of. The easiest approach I've come up with is to walk up the High Peaks Trail until you get at a 90-degree angle from the ridge that Pipsqueak (and Snout to the north) are on, then scramble upslope from the trail, near a decaying bit of log on the right side... You can pretty much avoid brush on the way up to the ridge, but it is steep. Once on the ridge, a faint route threads you through the chaparral to get to Pipsqueak... As Munge says, it isn't very brushy compared to other formations.

formation will be closed this coming weekend most likely, since bird closures go into effect tomorrow, IIRC.

I get lost easily so I always mount the ridge from the trail's closest approach and follow it until I run into Pip.
