Hey Everyone -
Since I'm basically done with the cover for the SPH Guidebook, Brad asked me to post it here.
So posting I will.

Lol
Looks good Steve. Thx for all the hard work!
-
Btw, take these off topic posts to that sph site. Sheesh! ;)
-
I'll get it there and a few other places. Brad asked me specifically to post here.
-
Actually, I asked you to post it on the "Everywhere Else" part of this site, not the "Pinnacles" part. Sheesh, your aura of perfection is now dented.
It is a beautiful cover.

family squabbles are the best
We aren't a family yet. My daughter is only 11 (as of yesterday), and his son is only 8. A little young yet to be "a family" dontcha think Squiddo?
Maybe DES could move this whole thread to where it belongs? I'm sure Steve would agree to that; or that we could collectively beat him into agreeing to that. Damn newbies anyway.

you lawyers are SO literal. I meant this family of climbers! lol, meant as a complement too btw.

HA
BTW, any more college letters yet?

She's pretty well satisfied that she's going to U.C. Santa Barbara. She wants to check out Cal State Monterey Bay (she got accepted there too), but it's extremely unlikely she'll change her mind (this became especially true after I pointed out how easy it would be for me to pick her up from there and take her climbing at Pinns).

Not that I climb anymore but hey it is cool.

Ditto!
-
Very Cool- Nice that lance is on the back cover.
-
He's on a route called Depends on the Senior Wall at The Far Side.
And Cruxluv, I'm not sure how true it is that you're not climbing much, but climbing or not, please continue to contribute to this site (you did, after all, make the single funniest post ever made here, and are almost always a great, not just good, contributor).

ALWAYS room for beer.
And ice cream.

Lance IS the localist local to TMtn.
-
Don't he live under it?
-
Isn't the punctuation off on the last sentence of the back cover?
Looking good, I want one!!!
-
Don't he live under it?
Dude.... That's not even an auto correct!
-
Isn't the punctuation off on the last sentence of the back cover?
I checked and double checked that sentence. How does it appear off and I'll look it over again.
-
Don't commas go before an "and"
I think having commas before and after "especially" is weird since that word isn't a type of rock and doesn't belong in that list.
But take my advice with a grain of salt. I don't know english, Ive proven this numerous times.
-

I think having commas before and after "especially" is weird since that word isn't a type of rock and doesn't belong in that list.
I honestly did not pay any attention to it and knew that you were trying to emphasize granite.
Well if we want to be really picky it is technically granodiorite - as is the majority of the sierra batholith (nerd alert!).
My understanding is that when writing a list you should say what, who, where, when, this, that and the other. The last word in the list before the "and" doesn't get a comma. I think what you meant to say is The area features a variety of rock types including basalt columns, mixed volcanics and most notably granite.
-
Isn't the second to last sentence unnecessarily using a comma splice in the second half of the semi colon?
Alternate version without the comma splice and using short sentences instead of the semi colon.
The SPH is a year round climbing destination. It has crags at low elevation to the west and others up high to the east, near the pass itself.
Is West cap or no?
-
I think what you meant to say is The area features a variety of rock types including basalt columns, mixed volcanics and most notably granite.
What John wrote is the meaning we intended, although the way you wrote it is bulkier.
I've got two English majors double checking it now, although I am pretty darn sure it is correct as written. Here's why: First, unless "especially granite" itself is a unique type of rock, there must be a comma between the words "especially" and "granite."
Second, commas usually denote pauses in speech. Read the sentence out loud, pausing briefly at each comma, and you arrive at exactly the meaning John described above.
Third, commas between distinct subjects are mandatory (such as here) the comma between "basalt columns" and "mixed volcanic rock." However, if different subjects are separated by the word "and," that same comma becomes optional. We omitted the optional comma between "columns" and "and" because the comma after the word "and" seemed necessary (and three commas would have been too much).
A lot of thought went into this exact sequence, but that doesn't mean it is necessarily correct or even best. I'll comment again when my experts say more.
As a side note: Adam, you're not allowed to buy a copy unless you pledge that you will actually use the damn thing!
-
Does it have Jailhouse in it?
I'm buying a Bosch just so I can go to SPH and bolt FAs just like Mungeman
-

You better not be. There's only so many good 5.6s around. ;) You can bolt the 11s and 12s and... that is, if Tom hasn't beaten you to them.
-
Why can't I get a Bosch? Isn't that the weapon of choice up there?
-
No Bosches. Once the book is out, that is it - there will never be another first ascent done. So don't waste your money.
I've now heard from two experts in English grammar and punctuation (Vicki and her sister Kaaren). I also ran it by my paralegal/right-hand woman/genius staff member Doris. All three agree that it is right as is for the reasons stated. Doris was actually adamant that the commas are exactly right.
Keeping in mind that Doris works weekends at her Husband's restaurant in MiWuk village, and that, at least, Munge goes to this restaurant often, I wouldn't recommend crossing her.
-
Adam, don't go to the darkside man!
-
No Bosches. Once the book is out, that is it - there will never be another first ascent done. So don't waste your money.
And actually I'll be working soon on one of three areas of good quality granite that I know of that aren't in the book and which have seen no development yet at all.
I've thought about this area in particular for a long time. I know how to get there and it's got lots of rock. I intend to call the area "The Missing Man Formations" in honor of my friend Luc Gruenther who died in January way too soon. Luc had been in the Air Force for ten years and so wasn't here at "home" enough to do much development. He loved his career flying, but was always a little jealous of all we were doing by way of route development up here. I'd hoped to get Luc to help me start putting routes in on these rocks, but now he can't. I'll look forward to showing Luc's mom, widow, and now two-month old daughter this beautiful, peaceful area at some point.

How can Kaaren be an English expert when she does not know how to correctly spell her name?
Climbers debating the deep nether regions of English seem odd.
Of course I post on a climbing forum and do not climb so I guess all is right.
-
Alright smart-ass, how would you spell her name? It isn't Karen, it's closer to Cairn, as in a pile of rocks (I call her Pile o' now and then). Apply your scandhooveian heritage to that one.
-
Laughing out loud at this thread
-
Of course I post on a climbing forum and do not climb so I guess all is right.
And quit claiming you're a non-climber. You still climb better, off-the-couch, than everyone else on this forum climbs except Adam. And as to Adam, well you're much, much better looking than he is, and your limited spelling and punctuation skills are better than his too.

Brad- see now this seems like family:-)
-

Actually, there are several areas that have seen a lot of hand drilling. Some areas are wilderness too.

Which is the exact comment that led to Cruxluv's funniest ever retort on this forum.

Ah ha! Was wondering what it was. ;D

The dark side of my elbow says to not hand drill.
Once you are corrupted by the Bosch...it's hard to go back.
Yep, power corrupts!
And feels so good.
-
At last ... Congrats guys !
-
I'll rig a battery charger for the drill to my bike. Kind of like a carbon offset but for drilling ethics.
And Brad, mittens and I will possibly be at Jailhouse Friday - Sunday. Maybe swing by Twain Harte if you're around. Sharma is as flakey as a Spanish croissant... Not sure about Espainya.

As usual we'd need 5 seconds notice that you're going to show up.
-
We're done. Steve and I just did the last four edits. We then compared quotes and decided on a print company. By Monday or Tuesday we'll have submitted the files to them and the print process will start. They tell us 4 weeks from then to shipping. Make it 6 instead and we're looking at the last half of May?
Anyone here gonna want a copy?
-
put me first on the list!

is it heavy?

Awesome, I'll buy one and know a few others who will too. Oh wait, that was a rhetorical question right ? ;D

I'll bring my protrax F4! Just gotta know how to carry the heavy stuff.

Congrats
I think everyone

I promise that you'll be on a list for an IPhone version.
(Enjoy the wait - some time I'll explain to you why we can't and won't ever do one).

Damn. I thought I was pretty handsome especially now that I'm clean shaven, but my fashion sense sucks... maybe this is what you meant. I admit to my grammar skills being below par. And I am starting to write for ASJ so i better study.
Put me down for a copy of the iphone version....
OK I'll pay for the real book and try not to lose it. Let me know how much I need to prepay at the slumber party this weekend.
-
...at the slumber party this weekend.
Ah, Vicki told me that she told you about this. Think of joining our slumber party as ... birth control.

We just want to see you guys. Regardless of the "superabundance of 5th-grade girls" as Vicki put it. As for sleeping there, we might just drive up the road a little ways and bivy down.
I already plan on no kids, no debt, and no pets.

Actually our neighbor on the right has a huge driveway in the pines and she comes up only twice a year. That would be a quiet and easy place for you to crash if you want to (she's told us that this is perfectly fine with her).
And I'm not clear about the no kids etc part: is that just for this weekend or for life? ;D
-

Definitely for life.

Atomizer said he would adopt me though. So that's like have having a whiney baby!

You were supposed to keep that quiet!!! :o
You owe me a case of BLLs.

Speaking of kids, isn't some Mudmaster's birthday today? I think he's around 54 or so and he's off school right now...
-
Funny thread! Congratulations to Brad and Steve and everyone involved (e.g. Vicki)! Must feel good to be done.
-

Happy birthday J. C. What number is it anyway?
And thanks for the congratulations Mudworm.
-
Copy that, what's your vector victor?
-
Congrats on the SPH book getting finished... The cover looks awesome. Definitely put me down for a copy!
-
Happy birthday J. C. What number is it anyway?
Thanks Brad - sorry I didn't catch this earlier - KC pointed it out. Yes the number is 54 and I hit 120 onsights today! We met rhyang and some other climbers at the Flumes and KC got an onsight of Rumbling Rampart. Fun day!!
-
Two inches of snow here this morning, but it'll melt fast.

I got the text proofs back from our printer today, and I am very pleased. Their print is fantastic (I'm used to printing it on my office printer and what they did is so much better).
I'm almost 100 pages into it and there are no blemishes or printing errors so far (I didn't really expect any). On Monday we'll give them the OK (or give them the OK with a change or error or two to correct) and by the end of next week or so they should have printed the text. Then comes binding.
They'll get us the cover proof next week.
Without the cover our book is slightly thicker than is the Joshua Tree West guidebook with it's cover (God what have we done!).
-
It's about the "weight" of the book, not the size.
-
I gave the go-ahead this morning to the text. Now they'll print, cut, fold, collate, and sew the book itself over the next two or so weeks.
Meanwhile Steve's got the cover proof and is making some adjustments with the print company.
Not that anyone is doing anything this morning other than watching the events in Boston.
-

And changing diapers

I just talked with our printer:
1. The covers are all printed and laminated;
2. The text is almost done printing; folding and sewing should start on Monday at the latest;
3. The books then have to be covered, and then boxed.
All in all, it looks like about two tons of books should be shipping from Winnipeg, Canada to California on about May 17th. Shipping will take 4 or 5 days.

Wait these are Canadian? I'm out;-)
Congrats again
-
Glad someone posted something - I was starting to think the zombie apocalypse was here!
We'll have to come visit after Memorial Day and get a copy - then head out to the crags :)
I'll be like a kid in a candy store!
-
I'm with Squiddo, only US bound books please. You need to support American jobs.
-
Canada: the 51st state.
Same printing company as we used to print the Pinns guide, and same one Marty Lewis uses for his eastern Sierra guides. We did decide that there was no way we'd go overseas for printing, but the Utah based printing company that we looked at lost their sewing sub-contractor and they were going to have to outsource the sewing to New Mexico. We decided to keep it where it could all be done in one place.
-
Canadian's are good folk, eh.
-
Just as long as they don't print French on the odd pages.....
-
Canadian's are good folk, eh.
Lol or cold Americans. Love CAN and Canadians
-
Got an email today from our printer. The guidebook's text is now printed, folded and collated. They started sewing today (the book's spine is sewn before the cover is put on).
I think we are on track.
-
I spoke again with the printer this morning. The books are nearing completion and are still on schedule to ship this Friday, May 17th.
Naturally the printer will be Fedexing a copy to me and one to Steve the minute they're done. I'm actually looking forward to seeing it.
-
I'm actually looking forward to seeing it.
Why the surprise? :-P
Congrats once again and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy. Now for the million dollar question, what are you going to do with the spare time:-)

Probably just work more to pay for the first round of college.
-
Probably just work more to pay for the first round of college.
Not a bad idea, actually, but, as it turns out, we've got that covered.
I think the extra time is going already to more backpacking, more study in my room downstairs, and, especially, to focusing my climbing on climbing harder.
Even though we got rained out after two days, I had a ball at Lover's Leap. A May trip to a non-SPH destination would have been an unaffordable luxury during any of the last six summers.
-
Any minute now Dawson will get off of that useless site (the Walmart-of-the-internet/no-one-has-or-deserves-privacy-ever/let's-take-over-the-world/clones site), and post a photo here of the finished book (I can't access my flickr account from here - I don't keep the password anywhere but home).
Come on Dawson, come on...
-
The photos are beautiful. Someday he'll post them.
And, here's the other news: the books weigh in at ... 2.35 pounds per book! Damn, you all are going to need sherpas.
-

We'll just have to drill a hole through it so it can be slung and used as a chock on route.

OK, OK, here's the photos of the finished book

Sweet, congrats!

Looks cool, I can only imagine what is in there, with that much weight. How much weight does SPH Have on the Pinns?
-
Looks cool, I can only imagine what is in there, with that much weight. How much weight does SPH Have on the Pinns?
I never thought about that. The Pinns book didn't seem so outrageously large as this one does, and so I never weighed it. But this SPH book is made of exactly the same paper and cover material, and is of the same width and height. It's also almost exactly 50% larger (nearly 600 pages compared to 400).
U.P.S. tracking says the rush shipment of 20 books is on schedule to be delivered to my office tomorrow (imagine shipping 48 pounds of books by rush delivery - we must be desperate!).
-
The first box of 20 books (rush shipment) is now on the U.P.S. delivery truck, and that truck has left Angels Camp (their local warehouse). I'll get them today.
The orange highlighter is sitting on my desk waiting...
-
Oh, and the main shipment (four tons of books) is leaving Winnipeg today for delivery next week.

You wild guy, I know what your Thursday night is looking like.

I now have one in my hot little hand. It's gorgeous, it's heavy.
-
Nice- enjoy the highlighting session:-) So Brad, i'll ask but unlikely to have any to trade for cash this weekend? F4 and I are considering a Sunday day trip up Sonora Pass....the wife was kind enough to grant a day pass
-
The whole idea of getting twenty fast was to have some to get to people for this weekend. So, yes, it's possible that we'll have one available if you come up.

Luckily I have it on good authority that you have more. Carry on:-)

Shall I bring some highlighters with us on Sunday?
I think the idea of a fast 20 was to make some fast beer money.
-
Thanks for the offer, but no need. I climb so much that my staff at work buys them by the gross for me ;)

plans for sunday?

About 20 or so of us (Rob and you and Marc included) are going to the South Fork Area. This requires a 30 minute approach and accesses some of the very best climbs on SPH.

Good job!

Those of you who saw Tricia biff on Sunday can see that, bloody, gory knees and all, she's helping move books.
The kid's got a good attitude.
-
much good mojo
Brad is that you dropping a box a books?
Dang that is a lot of books
-
And how many is Marty going to take?? Or are the distribution ones going directly?
Yeah, sure is a lot of books.
-
How many in each box? Must not be many with how thick they are.
-
There are 20 in each box, in much bigger boxes than the Pinns Guide came in. That guide came 18 to a box and weighed 31 pounds per box (as opposed to 48 pounds per box with this new book).
-
The check is in the mail :)
