Title: Shutdown
Post by: waldo on October 01, 2013, 09:17:11 AM
In October of 1990 the Federal Government shut down for four days as a result of a veto by the first President Bush.  The closure fell over a weekend and Holmgren and I did not take it well.  How dare they close our Monument!  The statute of limitations has expired, so I can confess that we ignored the closure.  We parked on a turnout just out of sight of the locked gate on the West Side and walked in to the High Peaks.  We climbed and strolled on a beautiful day, untroubled by anybody else!  Upon our cross country return, we discovered several rangers patroling the road below us on foot and an enforcement vehicle parked at the gate.  Jack and I did not doubt that his car had been recognized and that the reception committee was for us.  We both got the giggles as we crept Indian style through the chaparral. We worked our way close to the road and waited for the closest ranger to turn his back.  He quickly cooperated and we ran like bandits for the car, Holmgren cackling wildly.  Despite the irreverent noise, we made a clean break.

Here we go again, but, unfortunately, I'm not nearly as fast as I once was.

Under Section 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations, there is no statute of limitations and no expiration at all for having violated Federal land use regulations...

Nice story. Ron Skelton and I did a similar thing in "The" Valley that same year. We got in using an employee ID. We did an FA on Higher Cathedral Rock that we called Malice Aforethought.

Here is another reason why Pinnacles should not have become a National Park.

It's in-consistent...open, closed, open?

Maybe a private group could buy it and manage it like Disneyland?

Here is another reason why Pinnacles should not have become a National Park.

They've got all National Monuments closed right now too.
Hopefully they'll pull their heads out of their arses before the weekend but I'm not holding my breath. Sounds like a party at Brad's this weekend :)

Even worse a Monument....the land needs to be managed for profit, like Las Vegas....

It would be worth the drive down in order to poach but I am leaving town

What's the penalty?

What's the penalty?

There isn't any, I made that up out of whole cloth. Sounded pretty good didn't it? But it didn't even phase Bob.

I had dealings with the FBI in my youth.  I much prefer the NPS.  I was much impressed by the dedication of the rangers protecting the Pinns from Jack and me.  They weren't getting paid.

Its amazing how fun being a criminal can be.

The serenity in Yosemite this weekend was amazing.

We didn't have to wait in line to climb The West Face, one of the best climbs of my life.

And we had a a great afternoon doing naked yoga next to Swinging Bridge.

Now I have to decide what and who I will climb with at The Pinns.

This is like a video game for me.

Oh, gag me with a blender. That's waaay too much information...

We climbed (legally) today in the South Fork. Nothing long (180 feet), but, like you we had it all to ourselves.

P.S. please be careful and don't get caught.

The weather will be perfect in the monument this weekend.
Say goodbye to Pinnacles...say goodbye my baby...(sung to Billy Joel's Say Goodbye to Hollywood).
Would I like to go? Sure.
Would I like to find out the penalty for trespassing on federal land - nope.
I imagine a stiff fine and possible banning from the place for an undetermined amount of time.
With my luck they would decide to make an example out of me and impose whatever the maximum is.

so what your saying is that you're going to climb granite. Makes sense to me.

Rob - Much as I would like too, that's a big negatory on the granite rubber duckey - 4 1/2 to 5 hours one way is too far to drive to climb for one day. If  we have a long weekend it's a different story. Probably go check out Castle this weekend and head down to SLO weekend after that - unless these asshats wake up - not holding my breath on that one!

Maybe there's a silver lining to the shutdown (besides the squirrels re-taking the park).

Just think of the $$ saved in gas by not driving there!

This should lead to an increase in SNP guidebook sales!

I saw a story on the news this morning - two ladies were each issued a $275 fine for hiking in Red Rocks.
Title: Re: Shutdown
Post by: Atomizer on October 10, 2013, 11:15:00 AM
But that is Red Rocks... they are known for busting people.

They are not busting people in Yosemite, and basically just issuing parking tickets. I talked to a few LEOs about this. They hate what is going on and also just don't have the time to go looking for people to bust. I know for sure people are still climbing all over the valley, but you can't drive beyond El Cap Crossover without the secret password.

I don't give a rat's ass about the valley.
My love lies elsewhere.

Bummer, so that nixes the trail work weekend?

I'd hit the Grotto or some place up on 108.

I have a bad feeling about it. Everybody loses until this idiotic standoff is over.

I wrote Larry and said we'd be there to help if this nonsense ever ends.
When it is over I am going to name a first ascent The Death of Common Sense.
Plans for Castle thwarted by knowledge gained - sticking to the wheel and mellow ocean sounds for the weekend.
I will travel to mud beyond my beloved next weekend if the madness continues.

Utah struck a deal with the Feds to get their National Parks open since that is where quite a bit of their money comes from.  I heard 100 Mill for the Month of October.  I have no idea how acurate that number is but is it enough money that they got their parks open early.  Talked to one local and he stated that Utah wants to get control of their parks.

The MTB riding out there is really good.  They actually get it and realize there is no desire for DPR type trails.

You know, I was thinking for a moment today that you and I should get in another day of rebolting on Resurrection Wall. And then reality set in.

Too bad that the "party of Lincoln" now celebrates invented/imagined realities around confederate flags. Buttwipes.
