Title: The Merrick Bayonet
Post by: Aaron McDonald on December 09, 2013, 03:49:33 PM
Check out the Merrick Bayonet hand drill.  Keyless without the pinch factor of the Rocpec and no wrenches to forget. Will fit 3/8 and 1/4 inch.

can it be used without the Velcro strap foam holder or is that part of the setup.  The metal end on the blow tube is a good idea.

You can absolutely remove the foam and Velcro strap. The link I included above that has detailed drawings of the internal workings.  I was thinking about replacing the foam with a handle bar grip from a bicycle. I kind of like the rubber protection the the rocpec provides.

Looks pretty cool. But then you can't used sawed off shorter bits. Does anyone make SDS 3/8" bits which are shorter for starting holes?

Why couldn't we contact tool manufacturer and request that some bits be made?  We would probably need a minimum order.  What length do you want?

I also like the rubber protection.

Note: The rubber protection doesn't always work. Wild whacks can still cause accidents.

What - you don't have a 3D printer?

long enough to drill a Powers 2.25" hole and still slip a cord over it, for panic purposes.

Dan, myself, and others have searched for short sds bits.

No dice.

China could fab them, but even that would be a stretch.

Best bet is to drill HSS, chop them short and sharpen them.

Mucci, what glue needs to be used to keep the grip from slipping on the new hurricane drills?

Golf club grip tape. 2 layers.

Start by cleaning the metal with alc. then wrap the housing liberally with tape. Soak in mineral spirits and slid the grip on.

It won't just come loose like they do with original adhesive.

I will look up what kind of glue I used on the last one.

Both will do the job but the tape is bomber for longer.

Here is the adhesive I would try.

This might have been excellent information BEFORE I ordered my drill :(

This might have been excellent information BEFORE I ordered my drill :(

Please, like 1 drill is EVER enough.

I own 3 portaledges, 9 ropes, 6 Helmets, 3 wall hammers, 7 new pairs of fingerless wall gloves, 20+ different types of belay devices, 7 adjustable daisies, 4 nonadjustable daisies, 11 harnesses, and don't even ask about shoes, both climbing and approach.

oh, and 2 drills.

why do I say all this? I realize that I had intentions to make a joke at first, but then I just started showing off, and then I realized I was crying out for an intervention... but not the kind of intervention where you guys take my gear. Big bag of nope, that. I should probably block ebay from my laptop and phone though.

Holmgren and I did use short bits back in the day.  He had a very tiny one for desperate stances.  He could hold on with two or three fingers and still grip the drill.  It went slowly.

So how much is this thing and where is the ordering info? - I see nothing on the pdf and an online search as well as his website danielmerrick.com brings nada unless you want to hire him as an expert witness.

The Bayonet was a hit! I modified the handle with a bicycle grip, but may still need some tweaking. Clink heroically got us off the ground and started a bolt hole with a 2 finger pinch. Seems to be very efficient at making holes.  Maybe too aggressive, in that if you hit hard it was easy to bind the bit.

Nobody's better than Clink.

He seems to have inherited the stance-bolting legacy: Higgins - Holmgren - Clink.

Proud.

That be cheating....and makes all the difference.
