Last weekend I saw person wearing a ranger colored shirt and a patch that looked like NPS official with bigger lettering with "Volunteer" on it.
Is that a formal type of thing being a "volunteer"?

We've talked to a guy in the High Peaks on several occasions with that same getup. There are also people up there monitoring the condors with equipment. We never thought to ask your question though. Did you try emailing Gavin?
-
no email to Gavin. He'll get around to seeing this at some point. #notworried #collectivedialogue

It's definitely an official thing. That person will be covered by the Feds in case of injury. The NPS is very cautious about having humans work for them. And just because it says Volunteer on their uniform, it does not necessarily mean it is a free for the NPS to have that person work for them. It often takes funding for volunteers to be utilized.

Atomizer - where the hellya been? Surfing at Maverick's :)

I've been Surfing Baja.

Just seeing this thread, but I echo Atomizer's sentiments about volunteers: they are definitely official, and do cost the park a bit of money (through training, equipment use, etc.). We have an increasing group of volunteers helping out with different programs in the park, including condor tracking, raptor monitoring, invasive plant removal, maintenance projects, PSAR (preventative search & rescue), etc. These are people that want to help out park operations at Pinnacles but aren't necessarily available 40 hours a week. Particularly given the funding shortfall the past several years, it has been great to have them on board and passionate about Pinnacles resources.

PSAR (preventative search & rescue)
That could be interesting....."excuse me, but I don't recommend standing on the condor railing, you might slip"
-
F4: Heh, yeah really. ;)
Seriously, though, it has been great having a group of PSAR folks out on trails. It is amazing how much more quickly we can respond to incidents (lost hikers, heat stress / exhaustion, ankle sprains, etc.) with the PSAR crew roving trails and able to quickly arrive on scene. Especially as visitation numbers having being going up at the park.

Gavin - is anyone on PO patrol? It is reaching out to get unsuspecting hikers. There is at least one spot on the way to the Monolith where you have to literally bob and weave to avoid it on the main trail. It's juicy :)
-
Yep the evil PO is really reaching out over a few spots on the trail.

Why are you going to The Monolith anyway? There is nothing there for the adventurous types like you.
-
Aren't you supposed to eat the leaves to get a tolerance?
So chomp on a !eat as you pass by.
-
Yeah, the PO is getting bad again. Usually the Trails crew comes along once or twice a year to snip away the offending branches, but I think Jamie has a full plate right now just trying to line up trails projects this season.

Hey, it's a national park, not Disneyland. Let people run the risk of P.O.
Hell, let them run lots of risks; danger is good for their touronistic souls. So we lose a few, it'll keep the rest in line, help rejuvenate them all. Freedom, not safety is the greater good. Let the trails be free for alls.
Hard to believe that I've been re-reading all my books of Ed Abbey essays huh?

Not going to - just passing by...but Amen to that! With all the chalk plastered on the holds there is no mystery there. Someone should use a super soaker and a brush and clean that shite up - or just plaster the entire face with chalk.
