good news is they did not cut the jersey off
-
Oh no!!!
Was it the good one?
-
I don't get it? Did you re-injure?
-
not a re-injure. It is a new injure. fractured clavicle. packing up to so we can head home. Thumbs up was cuz I just completed the walk out which was becoming a bit uncomfortable. The upside down camelback is the make shift sling which worked fairly well.
Thank you Tom for walking my bike out, that helped quite a bit.
Google search sucks when it comes to Emergency Rooms
-
well, the good news would be yer shoulder isn't more messed-up.
Bad news, the likely rehab will still suck and you'll have to work on the same shoulder muscles.
Best you loan me your Cannondale for a few months.
Heal up!
-
Dagnabbit.
You can hike with me and do multipitch MFA's with binoculars.
We need a sailor cussing , slave driving, trail boss captain to direct trail building at the end of October. Lawn chair will be provided. Contraband, you will have to sneak that in yourself.
-
Holy crap. You climb hard, dangerous stuff at Pinns for years and stay injury free, but as soon as you get into hard biking you start battering yourself silly (were you riding hard or just casually?).
I agree with Clink. Now you gotta come out to the trail work, relax in a lawn chair and make sure we don't screw it up.
-
Better start diving again...way safer than biking.
-
will try and make the trail work day. I am plenty good a cussing. Was riding hard but it was a fairly non-technical trail. Considering I have been riding bikes for over 45 years two injuries is not to bad (not counting road rash). Good to be home.
-
Can you still drive?
You can be the minster of transportation.
-
oh man, really?
This is not good for your Sherpa skills.
-
just got back from the Ortho, looks like, unless something moves there will not be any surgery. Seems like two weeks for the worst of discomfort then 6 weeks to heal up.
-

And then 10 weeks beyond that to get muscle strength back to the point it was at before the injury. Damn dangerous sports.
-
yep.

Did he check your head?
-
Did he check your head?
His head is fine, look at the first pic. The thumbs up, I won't kick your ass photo.
-
Just got off the phone with a friend who has broken his collarbone three times and he said 8 to 12 weeks. So my 6 to 8 might be a bit optimistic. Doc said the head was fine (relatively).
I think that is the, do you have pain meds and beer look.

I can lend you my mountain uni if you want to work something hands free once the apatite solidifies :)
-
yeah, i am sure that would work out well

Might I suggest a lower impact pursuit .....say bird watching?

Mud style? Load bike, kayak and climbing gear in vehicle, drive to coast. Ride bike carrying kayak and gear 5 miles down path to obscure beach. Kayak to small island 1/2 mile out. Rappel off clumps of native plants to view rare bird.
How 'bout barbecuing or paint by number?
-
i burn shit and can't count

You should all take up surfing. Its the only other activity that even compares to climbing. Enough withe these expensive bikes.
-
my wet suit is not made for surfing and surf boards are expensive. Already own bikes.

You can have my wetsuit and long board - haven't had them out in years.
And I disagree that surfing is the only thing that compares to climbing...You-Knee-Sigh-Kill :)

Oh, dang....
This might be fun.
-
Many years ago, Yvon Chouinard said: “Without climbing, we’d all be surfers”
I think he was referring to the lifestyle choice.
But he also said he enjoyed climbing a lot more before it became economically driven, hence his departure from BD.
Time to go surfing... because its as rad if not radder than climbing.
-
Time to go surfing... because its as rad if not radder than climbing.
Dude, that is like, so debatable.
-
bicycles are rad and bicycling in the USA is one of the last mainstream outlaw sports. There is true dislike of bicycles. Our local email list always flairs up when bicyclists are mentioned. Hell, even the Sierra club hates bicyclists.
Climbing has become legit and is fairly mainstream. Unless of course you climb obscure Pinnacles routes.
-
"mainstream outlaw sports"
you can't be mainstream and outlaw at the same time.
Skating pools in foreclosed properties in Fresno is outlaw.
Cycling has their bike lanes for fuk sake.
You don't see but a single NPS sanctioned climbing route that is maintained by the park service (Half Dome cables).
-
oh, an moving over plastic ain't climbing.
You've been out for too long. Heal up and lets go climbing!
-
btw, you better heal up because the Veg King Salad is coming back to roost and we're doing Cashel bishes!

Wow, way to twist a comment around to something it obviously never meant. For someone who often pisses and moans about "lawyers," you're pretty good at acting like one ;)
-
Actually the thoughts are too fast for my addled fingers.
-
Munge, Skating is mostly mainstream now. heck when I was in ER two little girls were in there because of them. Climbing is mainstream. When you have as many participants on plastic as you do on rock, well, game over. Bike lanes? Are you talking about side walks? I have had way more close calls riding a bike on the road than probably every other pursuit put together. Most of those close calls involved a vehicle of some sort. Commuting by bicycle around Phoenix was probably the single most dangerous activity of my life. I have Stories!
-

I can "law" my way out or into about anything. I'm sorry I meant "lie" >:D
-
My summer camp had mountain biking and climbing. Almost no injuries climbing over my 7 year tenure there but mountain bike injuries every single week. Nothing is more frightening than overseeing a mountain biking program for kids. I'm seriously surprised we never had a death.
-
An old friend who raced motorcycles was told once "son if you aren't crashing, you are not racing hard enough". Words to live by.
I was lucky with my crashes...but it was usually try I g to keep up with my old roommate, who used to race.
Duck and roll we would always say.
Heal up fast!
Does this mean the house is finished?

Nothing is finished and I have officially hit stir crazy

I think life is testing me by kicking me in the nuts. Surgery tomorrow on the collar bone ( this should make it better ). But, today I went to urgent care. Kidney stone. Had one a few years back. I have two in one kidney that are giving me pleasure and one in the other that does not seem to be bothering me at the moment. Not feeling real super at the moment.
-
Mud, that is awful. Hope they pass soon and good luck on your surgery tomorrow.
-
I didn't know they did surgery on a collar bone? It must be pretty bad.
Maybe you're not feeling too great now, but as a certain wife of mine likes to say: "this too shall pass." And it will.
Just think about how much fun you'll have at the Climber Appreciation Weekend while four of us carry you up to the High Peaks in your own palanquin.
-
Heal up buddy!
-
: "this too shall pass." And it will.
made me laugh. Nice twist.
-
Kidney stone.
Or maybe little pieces of your broken collarbone have made their way to your kidney. :-)
Wishing you the best tomorrow.

What will you name your new kids??
-
What will you name your new kids??
Rocky, Horror, Show.
I hear if you sing loudly and constantly it can help pass stones.
Caleb was just telling us about his Dad getting shut down on a hike from kidney stones. Eventually he was helicoptered out of the Banner area. That brought up a discussion on extraction insurance which deserves a thread of it's own.
Mud, thinking of you today, give updates when you can.
-
I'm sure you will shoulder all this weight like the champ that you are - but that heaping of events is just stone cold crazy! We're all pulling for you to have a speedy recovery :)
-
excellent. a poop story that always means the climbing is good.
;D a quote from Mud off the dreams of Icarus thread. I agree, many there are.
-
Surgery went well. Felt ok yesterday but woke up fairly sore this morning, i figure this will pass in a couple of days. from what i can tell with the limited motion that i have at this time is the shoulder movement seems much better. Kidney stones have called down a fair bit, just a bit of tightness in the back at the moment. Drugs help.
-
Good news Mud
-
More good news about the surgery.
And more "bright side" to look at: you've had a surgery and you're not drooling out a hole in your cheek ;D ;D
-
yes, that is good. now just to mend
-
Heal up fast!

That was on Thursday when I first saw Mr. Mud. At the time, he was all drugged up, in a somewhat blissful state. Even the voice was a little higher pitched than normal.
Last few days have been all sorts of uncomfortable. There is a cut in the shoulder. There are a few little guys in the kidney. And you all must know a main, unpleasant, side effect of pain meds, right? As they say, "come in threes." Hopefully, this is it.
-
That cracked me up when I saw it on my phone. Did not remember that conversation.
-
please tell me they helped put his shirt on before you left?
they didn't and it sucked big time.
Good job Mr Mud, save some happy pills for me!
-
They did help. The entire staff was very professional and very accommodating. Top notch outfit.
-
I watched that video 4 times, total invasion of privacy :D. I feel like family, really!
Feel better mud brother! Holler when you need a beer run. Happy pills work better mixed with alcohol, says so on the label.
-
Ain't it great havin' buds like clink! Heal fast brother.
-
yep
Thanks
-
hydration
that is all for now
-
2nd that on hydration.

According to the instructions, today is the day when we can take the covering gauze and tape off. I was bracing myself for some nasty sight and was pleasantly surprised to see the clean and organized surgery site. We are both impressed by the modern technology. No stitches. Just a series of zip ties taped to the skin that pull the cut tight. Over time, the zip ties will fall off with the tape. We took a photo for book keeping. And if you think you have the stomach for it, you can click on the link (http://www.mudncrud.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=69797&g2_serialNumber=5) to see the zip ties yourself. Pretty neat, eh?
-
neat and gross at the same time.
I was figuring something smaller like 3 orthopaedic scope/incision holes.
-
Nice
My shoulder has 3 scars.
They must have had to do some large work on Mr mud and needed more space.
I take it they didn't tighten the screws in his head?
-
nope loose screws still there.
tight screws in collar bone
-
I take it they didn't tighten the screws in his head?
Nice.
-
How is the recovery coming along?
-
I finally saw the video. Couldn't see it before.
To translate for the uninitiated...
"A little uncomfortable" to Mud = "Jeebus holy mother of exquisite S&M pain" for the rest of us.

Yesterday I was at PT. I explained to the Physical Therapist that my neck was bothering me a fair amount over the weekend. A fair bit more than normal, ever since the crash it has been kind of tight. I am laying on my back and she is behind me holding my head and working on my neck and traps. Pushing right up to the collar bone but not ever really touching it. At times she would kind of push under the collarbone. She has a bit of an accent and when she is concentrating it gets a bit stronger plus she speaks quietly. I really thought she was talking about my neck muscle when she pushes down deep and I hear/feel a double clunk. Then she sits up and says, your first rib was out, if your first rib is out it can be very painful.
The shoulder seems a bit better today.
-
Good, you're all healed now. Or close enough.
You gonna join us at Pinns on Sunday (at least hike and hang out).
Seriously though, it sounds like you've got a P.T. who is paying attention. I've got a rib that "goes out" too. It makes it hard to twist at all. Luckily my friend/chiropractor John Sousa knows what it does and he knows how to fix it quickly.
-
Sunday evening your time I will be on a plane half way to Bangalore.
-
Sunday evening your time I will be on a plane half way to Bangalore.
That doesn't sound good. You leave on Friday afternoon and should have fully arrived in Bangalore Saturday evening our time. At least, that's what I was told. You didn't expect me to accidentally stumble back on the Forum, did ya?
-
Sunday evening your time I will be on a plane half way to Bangalore.
Oh duh, I forgot about that. Well, we won't see you then. Curry on.
-
He made a joke.
-
It will be my Sunday night that is all that matters.
;D
-
He made a joke.
Yes, yes... *shaking my head*
-
by the way, welcome back
-
Just came back to say I'm missing you already. :)

It will be my Sunday night that is all that matters.
Are you from the future?

India is interesting. First this I noticed was the smell of the air and the people are very polite. Even the officials are very polite, a police officer said excuse me while passing by in a crowded area. The room is kind of cool, the wall between the bathroom and the bed area is glass. Make me wish a certain beautiful woman was here taking a shower. Lot's of lines even at 2 AM. Not only do you go through a security scanner to leave on a plane you go through a security scan to get off a plane ( that was unexpected ).
-
More random musing from India. So far the traffic does not seem to bad, some of the fast intersections seem a bit sketchy. Mostly it seems people drive/ride the way I would have in my 20's and 30's. The biggest difference is they do it with their wife or child on board. Saw a young girl ( 3 or 4 ) sleeping while her dad rode with her tucked securely between his legs. He had a tank bag that had become some what flattened and she was laying forward hands tuck up under her chin and sleeping peacefully. There is something about the gals riding side saddle while the guy splits lanes and generally zigzags through traffic sometimes quite closely all the while being totally unfazed. Cows really do walk down the middle of the road and nobody hits them. The dogs are very adept at crossing the road and are not in anyway fazed by cars. Lots of littler. What is it about a Muslim gal all in black nothing but eyes exposed, habit and everything flying in the wind, as she hauls ass through thick traffic. Somehow coming out of the restaurant and realizing ,after walking around the block, that yes indeed the taxi really had left. This did not seem to bother me, even though I had absolutely no idea where I was and had no working phone. There are lot's and lot's of horns. The most people I have seen on a motorcycle is four. The most containers, five plus two riders. Cows seem to eat garbage. In general safety is an afterthought. Even the signs are worded politely. A bathroom with glass walls that has a shower with glass walls is both cool and weird.
-

Mr Mud,
It's not weird, it's practical. When your cow needs a shower after dodging traffic and eating garbage it won't get claustrophobic in the shower.
-

And Clink would know since he lives in the country...with cows and all.

Day 3 – The haze, much like in China, never goes away which takes away from the top floor view. Even though there are sidewalks they seem to be optional which makes crowded roads even more interesting. I have been told it is the responsibility of the pedestrian to make sure he/she does not get hit and if you do get hit you really should not expect anyone to stop unless of course you are blocking traffic which is bad form. There appears to be one Micro Brewery in Bangalore (which has been renamed to Bengaluru). So staying long term does not really seem to be an option even though there is a service guy here that brings me coffee throughout the day. The locals are very hospitable they took us out for drinks (it is only Monday), I told them this makes them very, very hospitable, a hospitality that cannot be beat. At this point the guy from Slovakia told me they are even more hospitable since they would take us out for drinks at lunch. I am now very impressed by other countries and realize the US is definitely slacking off. Indians are however deprived since not one of them have heard of Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout, shameful, I was actually told that a person may not be able to find an Oatmeal Stout ( I did ask if a revolution is out of the question ), the good thing is IPA’s, from what I can tell, are pretty much unheard of by the locals. A person is expected to give two to three Months’ notice when leaving their job. Traditionally women do not drink and yet they still marry someone (I cannot figure out how this works). They have no smoking laws, you cannot smoke in the building or on Campus. You have to go through security then walk down the sidewalk 200 feet or so.
-

How drunk was Mrs. Mud?
-
...I have been told it is the responsibility of the pedestrian to make sure he/she does not get hit and if you do get hit you really should not expect anyone to stop unless of course you are blocking traffic which is bad form.
What are the chances that you'll get home with no additional broken bones?
(Oh, that's right, you'll be on foot and in a car, not on a bike, so you'll probably be OK).
-
India is the one country where the company policy is "No one can get a rental car". So we take taxi's everywhere. I have gone for one two to three hour walk.
At the bar you have a choice between, 300ml, 650ml and the beer tower. One guy called his Dad and asked if he could have a beer. The one gal that was with us did not drink because as she stated multiple times "My Dad would be in the office tomorrow morning". It is different here but as with all things, it is changing. Very interesting to talk with them over a beer tower.
-
you were going to drive? nice
-
No, I was gong to ride. I originally had two days of bicycle riding lined up.
-
No, I was gong to ride. I originally had two days of bicycle riding lined up.
How? Aren't you still mending?
-
Yes, still mending. I had to cancel the bicycle riding after the accident happened.
-
The food in India is pretty good although at times fairly spicy, so far nothing really weird. Worked on the street side of the building for a bit. There is a traffic guard there, he seems to have incredible athletic potential. His whistle is long and unending with nary a break for a breath. Yet he does not seem to ever pass out. I do not see how he does it. Went out in rush hour traffic yesterday, Damn. Saw my first police car, it was after midnight, the roads were fairly empty and he was driving down the road at about 15 MPH with his lights on. One of the locals joked that he was probably learning how to drive. There was a fatal accident yesterday ( I read and heard this is not common ) right down the street from where we are. The guy in the truck ran and the locals chased him down and “Thrashed him” then burned his truck. Perhaps this is why. It rained yesterday and it seemed to be a big deal. There just are not very many paper towels or napkins around. Losing power seems to be fairly common. Sitting in darkness waiting for the generator did not seem to slow the conversation. I could really use a real cup of coffee.
-
Chai much?
-
Have not seen it here. Either coffee or tea. But coffee and tea come in small tea cups. The largest cup of coffee I have received was about the size of a shot and a half.
-

In a world of large bovines rummaging through garbage, the lights flicker and eyes flutter from lack of caffeine. The smell of burning vehicles permeates the air.
Person or cow killed? The driver may have fell asleep at the wheel from coffee deprivation. Group anger management intervention classes needed.
-
Person. I think actually getting into a vehicular accident here is considered bad form. Really hurting someone is really bad form. Kind of like rap bolting on discovering wall but worse. So the trashing makes sense, do you not agree? I think I blame everything on a lack of caffeine.
-
Wish Mr. Mud a smooth journey home. The 24-hour trip from India back to the US is always brutal. Last time, the first stop I made after returning was to Rite Aid to pick up meds for a stomach bug that bugged me for 10 days. Hope it's different for Mr. Mud.
-
We hit Ride Aid. Got my bug on the last day. Four hours before my flight I started hitting the head every half hour. Once in the airport I basically went from bathroom to bathroom. First leg of the flight I thankfully had an aisle seat right next to the bathroom. Not so fortunate on the second leg.
The second leg was one of my least enjoyable flights. I had two real big guys between me and the aisle, constant upset stomach and bowels that were un-happy. I basically did not eat or drink. Plus there was a small boy that cried, wailed, sobbed, and screamed for about eight and a half hours ( no exaggeration ). Plus I could hear him going through immigration and at baggage claim. Every once in a while one or two other kids in the area would join in. Good to be home.
-
Welcome back....now get some Cipro....darn I had a prescription I didn't fill.
That will kill the bug.
Does this mean the forum is now outsourced?
-
something like that.
-
Well, that settles it. Not going to India, ever.
Everyone I've known gets ill after these business India trips.
-

Everyone I've known gets ill after these business India trips.
Now they'll ask you to go for sure mungie :)
Did I mention they have a buttload of volcanics over there?
-
It is a good way to lose weight....
Every travel kit should have Imodium and those electrolyte tablets. Cipro would be nice, but excessive.
In Fiji both of us got something from the nightly Kava.
We ended up getting Cipro for Jenny.
Such fun.
-
Mr. Mud is going in to surgery for arthroscopy today. I think he is inherently scared of the surgery because last night I heard him say to the kitties it could be their last time sitting on his lap. Pfffft, apparently, the kitties were not fooled. Despite him trying hard to coax them to come to him, scenes like following were *not* observed last night.
You'll have to try your charm some other day, Mr. Mud!
-
you'll be fine Mud!
-
I'll be thinking about you today dude and sending positive vibes your way :)
-
I think he is inherently scared of the surgery
If he makes a mad, last minute dash for the door, I will understand. Whether his gown is open to the front or back might make for interesting video surveillance footage of his attempted escape.
Good luck Mud!
-
I don't remember when it was last time he was so color coordinated. :)
-
Nice, buck up buddy and enjoy the meds....ahhhh.
-
Thanks all. Just got home. A bit sore but already notice the improved range of motion. Doctor said that I can start doing lat pulls. Not much weight but I can start. Have a cat on my lap.
-
drugs?
-
Nice to hear that.
-
Cool. Good to hear.
-
good news. rockin' the hair net! Ahhhhhyeah.
-
already notice the improved range of motion.
excellent news bro. heal quick now :)
-
Doctor said that I can start doing lat pulls.
Great news. Do you do these at home?
-
small gym at work. Was a bit uncomfortable doing them this morning.
I think I may renew my gym membership in order to get access to some real equipment. I really like to do rows (using a machine), if it is setup right it can really do a good one arm full range of motion pull. I also tend to do proper straight back rows as well.
-

Don't overdo it! The doctor encourages exercise because he wants blood and nutrition to reach the tissues to prevent scar tissue build up. If you feel uncomfortable, you may be causing new tears! :nono:

And you know I'm always looking for a climbing partner.

Pinnacles this Sunday?
-
Pinnacles this Sunday?
Easy climbing and a directors chair.
-
Pinnacles this Sunday?
Can you belay?
-
I never learned how to belay, only learned how to lead.
I can prove it by how many times the gym has revoked my belay card.
-
Now that you have "gently" broken in the shoulder, how is it? One arm lever by Friday?
-
not by Friday. Doing ok today. A bit sore but ok. Hopefully I can do a pull up within the next couple of weeks.
