Ours was just Hunky Dory :)

Are those routes as so-so as I remembered them?

We just took turns on the 8.
It had elements of fun and challenge for me + it was good to have the home court advantage :)

I had fun, managed to get out and scare myself on something not to hard.
-
Since you asked: Roger and I got four new routes established today at 8,500 feet on bullet granite. All at Deadman Buttress:
- Funeral for a Friend 5.10c *
- Love Lies Bleeding 5.11a **
- Toccata 5.10b **
- Fugue 5.8 **
All four are 80 to 90 feet long and protected by a mix of bolts and thin to really thin gear.
And Squiddo and I got a new route in yesterday in cool-enough conditions in the South Fork:
- Five Fingers 5.8
And we got another route started. We then had an interesting encounter with snakes (plural on purpose) and a marmot.
Thanks again Squiddo. See you up here again soon?
The rest of you Pinns nuts ought to come up to coolness again and more. While it lasts. See you soon too?
-
That loadstone makes your ass look small dear.
My day fabulous, shopping for designer clothes with Mud. He was scared at first then found out how easy it is to look cool in the right clothes.
-
The reason I wear a fanny pack is because it accentuates my wonderful ass.

Mud and clink,
Please ingnore the man behind the exfoliation curtain. He must have confused us with that other site.
You two seem way too focused on what's behind you.
Did you finish a route or just horse around all day?
Invalid without pictures!
P.S. Where's Waldo?

Speaking of that guy, he picked up an interesting rock on the way up to Deadman yesterday (at Chipmunk Flat). That other geologist (you know the loser one - he can climb both the RNW Face of Half Dome and the Nose in one day, and yet he very rarely climbs where it matters) immediately said "that's chert, it must have been brought here by Native Americans."
Apparently chert is a very hard sedimentary rock formed very deep in the earth. It can be formed into sharp tools like obsidian (I was pretty surprised that any sedimentary rock could fracture into that sharp an edge - he explained how it's silicon based, like glass, not calcium based). The nearest source to Chipmunk is near Knight's Ferry, almost to Oakdale.
Here's what it looked like:

Pretty cool stuff. For a science.

Liked the orange rock better.

Lots of chert in the Coast Ranges too - mostly red here in CA but comes in a variety of colors. Usually forms in a deep sea environment from siliceous ooze aka slimy mud - starts out as fish poop with the skeletal remains of plankton - then recrystallizes as it lithifies. It looks like that specimen might have some crystal pockets (vugs) or maybe dissolution cavities filled in with other mineral crystals. It's my understanding that the American Indians traded the stuff like currency as well as fashioning it into tools and weapons. The art of chipping it is called knapping (are you dozing yet?)- and few people are still versed in that art - kind of like mud masters :) Flint is a variety of chert and you can use either to create sparks by striking a piece of steel. It can also make an edge sharper than a surgical scalpel :)

Geologists. Two of the coolest nerds I've ever known. ::)

I pranced around and did not see any sign that Waldo or any other human had ever been there. Damn Mud, my head is still spinning.

Yep. A fossil of a geologist is petrified nerd.

Thanks for that imagery. Things you can't un-imagine.
-
P.S. Where's Waldo?
Waldo flaked again. I got up thinking there was someplace I had to go. By the time it dawned on me where it was, dawn was in the distant past!
Geology class is fifty years in my past, but I thought chert might be metamorphic. No? I defer to our resident experts. Son Jeremy (then about seven) found a cache of obsidian arrowheads in Tuolumne Meadows campground. The ranger, much to J's disappointment, advised leaving them in place. The Meadows campground has been in use far longer than we supposed.

In the parting words of a pleasant homeless person we gave a lift, "Happy rainbow unicorn dreams".
Meanwhile back to the diversion dear, JC you just have to go to Marshals after work, with me. On the weekend the Outlets, all of them! We can find you nice socks and a bright colored selfie stick for your unicycle rides. What are we aver going to do about Nelkins' wardrobe?

Nice Brad and Roger. That is equal to a whole seasons worth of stars for Pinns routes.

Pinnacles routes have stars?
-
Pinnacles routes have stars?
Well duh!
Pinnacles routes have lots of stars. Stars like mynameismud, Clink, J.C., K.C., Munge, Aaron, Crux, Waldo, mudworm and Nelkins. Famous stars....

were doomed!

Clink we on for Saturday? Looks like rain on Sunday.
-
Me to!

Saturday then. Time?
-
same.

Alright, fair warning here - TOTAL THREAD DRIFT COMING:
This isn't worth its own thread but I gotta put it out here somewhere. Did any of you leave a brand new ladder at our house? Seriously!
We've had two wooden ladders at the house forever, one tall and one short. About three days ago Vicki noticed a third ladder in the garage, leaning up against the other two. It's brand new (still has the labels on it), and made of fiberglass maybe (it's not wood). It isn't ours and we've got no idea who it belongs to.
All we can think of is that perhaps a climbing friend bought it and maybe left it in our garage while they were repacking or some such (I'm stretching here, but I have no idea where this thing is from).
Any claims to it?
-
You found your Birthday present. it will help you get that first bolt a little higher off the ground.
-
Someone with a pickup truck?
-
Someone with a pickup truck?
Yeah, I could see just that. Someone with a truck takes the ladder out to reorganize and forgets it. Weird. And it's no-where near my birthday.
-
Saturday then. Time?
The day, the whole weekend actually, will be hot dear.

Not much hotter than last weekend.
It's only 96 right now :)
It was the same yesterday and tolerable in the shade - actually quite comfortable until around 2:00 - typically it tends to go from warm to hot in a hurry after that - we take something frozen and just take a break in the shade. Higher up you usually get a nice breeze around that time too.
I also kind of like your strategy of going late and climbing until dark - problem with that for us is we don't climb in the gulch and it's too hot then for a long approach.
I was disturbed when we could see people swimming in the Res yesterday.

Gross.

Hi Brad, the ladder was mine. Would like to get it someday... What's your August PCT schedule?
-
I'd take a dip, you have to so you can say you did. But at high water.....that thing at low water looks nasty. The least they could do it put some chlorine in it....
Imagine the thoughts going through the hiker's minds to see some one running down the trail (throwing pack aside) and doing a cannon ball into it.
At least I can say I tried fishing in it when I was young. Oddly, it was when there were fish in it eating the endangered frogs.
So I was validated 20yrs later!
-
This made me proud today - Kat did a solid lead on the Tunnel Traverse - first lead I know of since I rebolted it :)
This made us feel ill on the way in and the way out absolutely despicable!
Yes all three signs are tagged - even the 146 sign.
Whoever did it should be hung out to dry!
They even tagged a rock on the side of the Inn's driveway and a caution sign on the roadside facing exiting traffic.

Nice lead KC!
tagging is always sad to see.
-
Go Kat!
-
Nice lead KC!
Thanks - I almost got drawn in by the bolt on Babies on the Ceiling due to the fact that I was not seeing the bolt overhead right above the headwall. I enjoyed leading it and knowing the bolts were good made it even better.

There was a nice lightening storm over Monterey and to the south this morning.

JC and Nelkins went down this morning to do some bolt replacement - hopefully they are not getting wet :-)
-
Jim, you coulda said something (although it sounds like you didn't know where you'd left it!). I'll call you about getting it back to you. Mystery solved ;D
KC, nice lead. I'll bet there's no other spot in Pinns that stays cooler than that one on a hot day. Good choice, (and again, good lead).

Thanks - the climb was in the shade until I got about half way up and yes, it was nice and cool in the shade. At least the sun was at my back while I was climbing.

It sprinkled off and on for a bit.

Somewhere between me saying "Kind of really wanting it." and Mud saying "I'll show you how it's done." :)
Coolest foot holds.

my, "I'll show you how it's done" did not go so well.

I find that hard to believe :)
It's a good thing you guys went yesterday. It was pretty freakin' hot up top Saturday. I couldn't get motivated to get on anything sunny after Kat bagged her lead and I took the time to patch a few holes.
I'm going to say it again - Tunnel Wall is now a "star wall" with spice, good rock and quality steel on 3 routes.
The overcast and sprinkles yesterday were perfect for our rebolting at The Frog.
Noal and I wore ourselves out replacing 9 bolts.
-
The re-bolt on Tunnel Traverse was a very good service. The old bolts did not look good.
Hey, JC, you should post more pics of the rebolting efforts. The mystery summit shots are always cool.
What did you re-bolt on the Frog?
-
I'm workin' on it :)
-
The crazy person with the drum was out again yesterday.
-
I heard you told them what for.
-
You could hear us yelling at him too? It's amazing that people at the Frog can yell at somebody on the High Peaks trail by the Unmentionable and they can hear 'em.
-
You could hear us yelling at him too?
No JC told me. I was in the other High Peaks, the higher ones.

Brad - what did you find in the Way Outback?

Sorry I didn't check in here (I didn't even see your message). I got home late totally exhausted and went to bed.
I was checking in with Vicki while I was out there with my (satellite) InReach beacon/text messager. (I got this for when I do long solo backpacking trips and was trying to learn it's systems - note to self, take reading glasses if you want to be able to read the screen!).

Good! If a rap bolter was to perish by mysterious circumstance, this device would be your alibi.
In other news, will detectives link the heart attacks to Styrofoam fake rocks?

So much for a memorial climb in the Way Outback. ::) :eeeek:
What did you discover on your walkabout - other than you still can't see up close no matter how badly you want to
-
Not much out there.
But I did see these at the top of a cliff, at least 3/4 of a mile as the crow flies from any fence line that currently exists at Pinnacles (and most of that distance is terribly brushy terrain). WTF??

Ridiculous notion. Why don't you come to your senses?
Funny you should ask that Don.
I actually came to my senses today and got the bald tires off my truck - nice new treads.
On the way home I saw a filthy white work truck and was pretty sure it was clink since it was the right color, model and had the right rack and metal boxes - plus it was travelling at grandma speed. Sure enough it was him :yesnod:
