The climb was a bit hairy yesterday even with the rebolt.
I imagined it must be like tiptoeing through a mine field.
A couple of parts were anything but subtle.
A big dark devilish cloud appeared over Chalone Peak while I was climbing, with some weird kind of twisty turning chimney-like crack leading skyward. A falcon whooshed by me on the summit like a fighter jet - luckily I was done and sitting down at the belay.
Saw some cool stuff on the way out – we hiked cross country behind Goat and Resurrection all the way to the Western Front and then down…rain drops started just as we reached the road…

Sussing out the Subtle crux. The last bolt is well before your feet for the main crux.
clink said everything was loose or wiggly when he followed :yikes:

Hell, BACK IN MY DAY we led that with the old time bomb bolts and not just the loose rock. KIDS THESE DAYS.
I got out to Table Mountain yesterday where I got in a new lead and where it was warm enough to climb shirtless (about time too - I'm getting kinda sick of being cold).
-
Oh, and the new route I led? It was a 5.8, just like your lead of Subtle Slopes. But this 5.8 was probably a "J.C. proof" route. Why? Well the route is called "P.O.K.O." It stands for Poison Oak Knock Out. Any other explanation needed?
(And as close to home and pretty as Table Mountain is, as great a pump as one can get there in so few routes, it just isn't Pinns; I missed you guys.)

It's pronounced EL DINGO.

I dig the Chalone peak pic

That pinnacle in your first shot is "The Barber Pole." I scoped it out (did not summit) when Mucci and Lars and I were back there. The only easy-looking line goes up the ramp seen in your photo, wrapping way around before trying to summit. Next time you're out there without me, just stick to the trails please (stop discovering all the possible FAs that are on my list).
And that is Petit Mort (and it has four bolts).

I figured it was - initially I thought I found something but then checked the book and your fabulous map.

Yep - I saw that line.

Now now - no reason to resort to name calling unless you want me to bring up the rustling that occurred two weekends ago in Hanging Valley. Isn't rustling a hanging offense? >:D
I will be sleeping inn.
That sounds nice. Rest, relax, fatten up some more.
Today looks perfect - sunny and 60 after two days with no rain.
Rain, rain and more rain in the forecast after today.
I am tracking daily precip, sunshine levels and temps at the park station.

We'll see; NWS makes it look like we may get away with some climbing. Sunday looks best.

Sunday was the best. I think we should name this Passover Pinnacle and if a climb is done on it - it shall be Benediction.

I didn't like "Poo Poo Pinnacle" at all. I'd thought that maybe we could substitute "Plop Pinnacle" for "Poo Poo," but I like your current suggestion better.

No picture of my amazing 4**** route down from Petiee Mart??? Mungie handed me a rack and said start climbing...said rack was sans bolt kit. But what did I know. I later found out that if you can land into bushes....they are a nice cushion.
No bolts, just a #1 red camalot (3urd version).

Oh and the W-Front routes are Larry's creation. He likes to hear about repeats.
"do you climb at the pinnacles?" A little. "have you been to the W-Front?" YUP, and we did all of the routes....nice ones.

Sorry F4 - that's Riviera Lanes in my home town - Akron Ohio - it's a 4 star alley where the pros roll.
Look at that ball heading right to the pocket - pretty sure I got a strike on that one ;D
clink - I'm surprised we didn't see one of those creatures at the res today. The water levels were so high we couldn't hike across the dam without getting our feet wet. I'll post some pics later this week. Headed back down with Brad tomorrow.
-
JC, bring yer balls, the Casino over the hill from Brad's has lanes. We should roll! I used to work in the snack bar at my local alley. Never bowled a 300, but came close.
Our work sometimes does an bowl event and I always surprise myself that I remember how to line things up and follow through.

Do they have special night lighting?

Soledad has a bowling alley with live music and pizza. Don't know if they have the night bowling with black lights. Post climbing bowling anyone?

I've never seen it so full that you couldn't get by without getting wet feet - two inches deep even on the side of the trail away from the reservoir.
Good for Pinnacles!

Nice, it should clear up in a bit.
Then it's swimming time this spring.
Good thing they fixed the dam up 10yrs ago or so.

Trail past the res was flooded again today - more than last time - we went around Upper Crust approach start.
Bear Gulch trail was a seasonal stream.
Nailbox was major seepage.

Heat Seeking Moisture Missile was cray-zee as was the spillway by the stairs.
Spent a fun day with Brad.
Shaping up to be a stellar weekend after a little rain the next few days.

It is actually raining at Pinns. 12 hundreths of an inch so far tonight with 100% chance of Heavy Rain predicted overnight.
Wrecks all over 17 today - a miracle I made it both ways over the hill without getting stuck or creamed.
Bad wreck on the Fish Hook on the way home tonight. There may likely be a bad pileup if someone comes racing off the last curve to exit. There were emergency vehicles lined up on the Fish Hook and no flares on the last blind curve. I don't envy those crew workers.

Holy Crap!
From 14.44 to 15.63 on the gauge since yesterday at 2:30 p.m.

14.44 whats?
National Weather Service says 1.19 inches in the last 24 hours (which is really, really needed - after climbing, I'm going to walk up to Upper Crust tomorrow to see how the PCAD work looks and how the rain affected it).

Yes...rainfall amounts are still measured in inches here in Mare-i-ca.
You guys are still going and camping?

Yeah, I've lived in 'merka for a while. But seriously, it read 14 plus inches? That's got to be an error? That amount seems inconceivable.
Up to this minute, the kids are still planning on meeting me there this evening (I'm leaving here around 1:00). And tomorrow looks climbable - at least to some extent. We're not planning on climbing Sunday (there's more weather coming in).

Do I need to call in the accountant?
The gauge has been sitting at 14.44 inches since the last pitiful rain a few weekends ago. I don't know when they zero it out - Jan 1?
That is probably the yearly total, which seems about right. CA's average rainfall is around 23 inches - approximately twice what a desert receives.
In other news the gauge tipped 15.80 at 9:30 this morning and hasn't moved since - so maybe the deluge is over.
-
No, no, don't bother the accountant, she's got plenty to do I'm sure.
The way I read the original post, I thought you meant that there'd been between 14.44 and 15.63 inches of rain in the last day or so (and so I was giving some thought to doing the first whitewater descent of Bear Gulch). Now I understand that what you were really saying was that the gauge went from a measurement of 14.44 inches to a measurement of 15.63 inches.
National Weather Service says 1.36 inches there in the last 24 hours, which is fits right in with the correct reading of what you wrote (there's more coming Sunday).
-
Rain gauge hasn't tipped in 3 hours and the sun is out! Yes

National Weather Service shows 6.87 inches of rain here in the last 72 hours. And it rained a ton before that too (except for Friday). The first good news is that we only went 10 hours without power over the weekend (and all of our roads are still here).
It's also good news that, after rising to over 8,000 feet, snow line is coming down to under 5,000 feet (we're at 4,300 feet here).
The third good news is a spell of clear weather that's coming in to our favorite wintertime climbing area ;D

Work may get started on clearing one of the two blocked roads to our houses. many slides and trees down. 43 blocked roads, many with multiple issues, at the end of the storms. Bear Creek and Old San Jose have had major "slip outs"(where half the road falls off). A lot of folks use these alternates instead of HWY 17, so the commute is going to get worse.

The next 24 hours at our elevation (from NWS):
This Afternoon: Rain and snow showers. The rain and snow could be heavy at times. Steady temperature around 37. Breezy, with a southeast wind around 23 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
Tonight: Rain and snow showers, becoming all snow after 10pm. The rain and snow could be heavy at times. Steady temperature around 38. Breezy, with a south southeast wind 18 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 9 to 13 inches possible.
Um, it's not rain though. Snow line is midway up the Twain Harte grade and it's pounding snow at home. Oh well, when the going gets tough, I... look forward to sunny days in Joshua Tree?

I should have stolen JC's sleepy ninight blankey when I was borrowing the rock tumblers from him yesterday. He told me to not bother tumbling the stones and just throw them outside in this kind of weather. ;)

Damn scary dude.
Once the ground becomes saturated, slopes will continue to fail every time we get significant rain.
Here is a shot I use for my classes and it is also one of my field trip sites.
Soquel Creek and Eureka Canyon are fault-controlled.
They both sit on the western side of a compressional bend in the San Andreas Fault where it slices through the SC Mountains and is causing rapid uplift along a series of thrust faults.
All the slopes are oversteepened and are further destabilized by the faults.
There are alternating layers of stronger rocks (sandstone) and weaker rocks (shale) and they are folded, tilted and faulted.

Unfortunately it seems like people get swept away from Lover's Point and some of the other granodioritic outcrops around Pacific Grove/17 mile Drive whenever there are storms. The ocean is a powerful and unforgiving force.
Glad you guys are back in action.
Hunker down for the next round and then it should be over for another week.

A question came up about the difference between concrete and cement. Technically the Palo Alto is a concrete ship with an interesting history. Maybe the county will decide that it merits repair as a historical landmark, reinforce it with steel and cement it back together
The primary difference between concrete and cement is that concrete is a composite material made of water, aggregate, and cement. Cement is a very fine powder made of limestone and other minerals, which absorbs water and acts as a binder to hold the concrete together. While cement is a construction material in its own right, concrete cannot be made without cement. The two terms often are incorrectly used interchangeably, but concrete and cement are distinctly separate products.
Cement
Cement is made from limestone, calcium, silicon, iron, and aluminum, among other ingredients. This mixture is heated in large kilns to about 2,700°F (1,482°C) to form a product known as clinkers, which roughly resemble marbles. These are ground into a powder and gypsum is added, creating the gray flour-like substance known as cement. When water is added to cement, it triggers a chemical process that allows it to harden.
I think if we add water to clinker he will simply be all wet  :yesnod:   :out: :prrr:
-
JC, funny you are talking concrete. Harry and I just threw 30 bags into a bad spot on our road on the way back from a grocery run. 30 bags cost us $81 and change.
-

Just like the two terms engine and motor.
clinkers, which roughly resemble marbles...
I would love to disagree. But that would be so...disagreeable.
-
Nope Santa Cruz politics mean they will debate the issue until the ship is rubble.

I'll be surprised if you don't lose that with the rain today. :incazzato: :madmax: :madman:

It's got to be pretty bad for us to use the word "hammered" in reference to the weather at our house (unlike Clink's home, our roads tend to stay in one place).
I think the time has come with this storm though. We're getting hammered (although so far the winter of 2010/11 was worse):
- We're now at feet of snow at the house; we're literally running out of room to which to snow blow the snow (it's nearly six feet deep with blown snow where I usually park).
- The internet and email are barely working at home (weather will do that) and down here at the office it's really slow too (pretty unusual for the weather to affect internet speed down here).
- I snow-blew the driveway for the fourth time in three days this morning.
- With a two-hour school delay I was able to get Tricia and two neighbor kids to school by 9:50. As we drove up, the principal was standing in heavily falling snow, at the school entrance, telling everyone that school was canceled for the day. School busses weren't making it to the school, so we picked up another kid ("Tricia's Gavin") from the market where the bus had stopped near Soulsbyville. All four kids are in my conference room waiting until I'm done with a few critical things here so I can get them home (I'm eating and waiting for Ellen to finish what I need to work on, so don't get smart about me posting here).
- Although it was snowing here in Sonora, that's finally stopped. For a while there was an inch of snow on the ground, semi-panicking the people who don't drive very high much.
Still, we've got plenty of available firewood, plenty of snow-blower gas, enough food and we love living on this mountain. Yeehaw ;D ;D

Hope you cut that tree up and burn it.

The wind gusts rolled through here a while ago with driving rain and shook the house.
I'd hate to be at clinks compound today :yikes:

This El Dingo crap has got to stop!
I drove up Old San Jose/Soquel Rd today to get to school and it was skeery :eeeek: :yikes:
Good news is we should be back in a drought cycle after this season.
-
Made it around the Hill via 101 today.
Old San Jose Soquel closed again - I didn't even chance it with the steady rain.
Looking forward to the weekend
-
Looking forward to the weekend
Still looking forward to the sunshine the next couple days.
There was an inch of rain at Pinns in the last 24 hours - the preceding couple of days had virtually none.
I'll bet the waterfalls will be flowing nicely the next two days at Pinns.
I wouldn't be surprised if the trail past the Res is flooded - it was close a couple weeks ago.
Hwy 17 closed again today as the debris flow near Vine Hill Rd received more lubrication from the steady rain yesterday.
The news said Caltrans is going to try and construct a safety berm this time. You don't have to be an engineering geologist to realize this will only be a band aid. They had a barrier made of concrete dividers with some chain link fence on top that got creamed with the last downslope movement. A Caltrans worker said it was probably 100 dump truck loads of debris. The bummer is there is no way for them to retain that slope until it dries out - I'm envisioning construction all summer long. If it keeps raining - and it looks like more rain next week - I predict the slope will continue to fail and the road will be closed with each significant storm. Did anyone see the video of the last surge pushing a pickup truck over the center divider? Wild.

Well 20 yrs ago I used to commute to scotts valley from Cupertino.
Coming down the hill before scotts valley is saw a huge tree just fall across the highway.
Damn, less than a mile from work and I am stuck.
Until a landscaping work crew poped up from the side of the fence....with a chain saw!!!
A few cuts later me and a few others were on our way down the hill and I was that much closer to getting coffee at Zannattos. Sucked for those going north as that was the side the tree fell from.
Ah the joys of commuting on 17, memories I'll never forget.
-
Thanks JC, after you wrote more rain I checked weather report. Jeepers, more rain. Hopefully we see some sun tomorrow. Glad you all are getting some time to dry out, California is getting hit hard. Heard that 35 is closed and 84 is partially closed until repairs can be made over the summer. How many people saw this coming?

Looks like no climbing this weekend with rain predicted every day but Sunday starting tomorrow and ending mid week next week.
I guess that means the forum will either be a desert or a flood zone. Kinda like major parts of California and many other western states that simply would not be sustainable without the diversion and delivery of water.
Welcome to life in an artificially created and sustained paradise

Looks like we all (except maybe Gavin and Alacia) missed a perfect round of Pinns days - 70's and sunshine the last 3 days.
It would have been nice to drive back and forth to Pinns every day rather than deal with the current commuting nightmare.
Unfortunately I have this 4 letter word that is keeping me tied up 4 out of 5 days. The last time I looked forward to Fridays this much was when I was a much younger man whose only focus was workin' for the weekend. Cue cheesy Lover Boy tune here

The park's rain gauge clicked over to 9.11 inches last hour.
There has been almost an inch of rainfall since it started falling at midnight last night.
Good weekend to be a duck or a kite - winds were predicted to be up to 50mph!
The gauge recorded a 50mph gust between 11:30 and 12:30 today - whoosh
-
It was supposed to rain here yesterday, but instead I woke to blue skies so I took a PTO day. I did a bunch of cleaning around the house with the windows open, went for a two hour MTB ride, then as the sun was setting drove into the gym. My ass hurts today and it is raining.
You guys seem to be getting hit hard by these storms.

Holmgren and I went out in the rain some years back to work on a new route on Squareblock Rock. I'd read in a Brit climbing book that Brown, Whillians and the lads wore wool socks over their climbing shoes to cope with wet rock. It doesn't work.

clink and I looked at that route the first time we climbed together on January 25th, 2013.

We made the right call today. According to the park gauge, it was sunny for about an hour earlier this morning then turned to gloom and temps only hit 50 for an hour. It looks like it sprinkled a bit after lunch.
Our trip to the beach was cool. Lots of shallow landslides along the sea cliffs and beaches littered with debris.
I am going back down to Capitola beach tomorrow to check out the cliffs.
I'll post some pics if I get any good ones.
Meanwhile they changed the forecast for next weekend slightly. Now they show a slight chance of rain Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Next thing you know they will change Friday too - oh sorry - is that pessimistic?

They don't seem to have it as organized/compact as Santa Cruz.
The Santa Clara page below is okay but may or may not be complete - it doesn't list as much as I expected.
There are Caltrans pages too but it's a lot of surfing.
A huge redwood fell across all 4 lanes of 17 on Monday and a bunch of locals that were stuck in the traffic busted out their chainsaws and had a party :yesnod:

I got in 40 miles of riding between the rain.
-
We will probably be up there tomorrow but the slab will probably be wet, it seems to take a bit longer to dry out. Most likely not a really early start since tonight is patch night and I will be working late.
They are calling for up to half an inch of rain overnight at Pinns.
It is not raining at Pinns yet but it is steadily coming down here on the coast.
You're all wet.
Not necessarily. Some things do not get wet or dry quickly.
Looks like you guys may have gotten lucky.
I see the rain stopped at 6:30 this morning after a quarter inch fell overnight and now the sun is blazing and it's a whopping 64 degrees.
Looks like Kat and I will take a ride down tomorrow and just do some fun easy stuff on the east side.
clink said he might be out sport climbing with yo so mighty tomorrow.
Hope you guys had a good day.
-
Looks like it is time to start tracking rain again.
It sprinkled a bit the 1st morning of the PCAD but was done by the time we got there to get the event rolling.
It actually sprinkled down there a little this morning.
I will be surprised if we get another wet winter after the last 2 but California is very unpredictable when it comes to weather, traffic and earthquakes. None of these things follows any predictable pattern.

I'm going with El Droughto so far for the year.
This latest storm has only dropped 0.19 of an inch so far.
Forecast for the weekend looks iffy with a brief clear window suggested for Sunday.
Time to climb some clean faces and maybe get in a little rebolting in the soon-to-be closure affected areas
-
Don’t say the shy is falling just yet.
New weather trend is for good and then bad.
Yeah, the dry nice weather was nice.
It can rain all January since I am working.

Truly from famine to feast today as Pinns is getting hammered by an inch of rain so far and winds near 20mph for the last 7 hours. Waterfalls will be damn cool tomorrow (and probably on Wednesday too) when it lets up.
If the forecast holds, Wednesday should be a perfect day for what I want to do...

I forgot how to climb but went to the gym anyways while it was raining to toprope 5.8s and 5.9. My grip was gone from carrying and then pinching to set 28 I-beams for retaining walls on Sunday. It felt good to stretch out on the plastic.

to toprope 5.8s and 5.9.
Translated that means 11+ and 12a at Pacific Edge. Good man!

They were 5.3s and 5.4s that I up-rated.
-
I love Mud-Tobagganing too!!!
One house we lived in while growing up had a small canyon in the back yard. The canyon wall in that area was clay so when it was raining really hard we would go to the cliff edge then slide down while laying down like when riding a toboggan. It had a few banked turns and bumps and was a little steep so so the speeds got kind of wild. The end was a slight drop into the creek. Just had to maintain enough control do dodge the devils club branches. Real Mud-Tobogganing.
-
It looks like it my have finally quit raining.
Gauge started tipping at 2:30 am Monday morning and went from 1.03 to 3.35 - stopped tipping just two hours ago.
I wonder how many feet of snow fell in the Sierra...
-
That is a fair bit of rain. North facing slopes will be damp for a week
-
That might look like sun in the background but it is not. It was drizzly all day with no sun yesterday - no wind either.
There were streams flowing down some of the trails and I cut away some branches from a fallen tree to clear a short section of the Juniper Canyon trail. The little waterfall in the picture is the Resurrection cutoff.

Almost no sun and mid 40's at Pinns makes me glad I am relaxing at home today. It was raining hard here about 2 hours ago, so I won't be surprised if the crud gets some more precip.

Agreed. Thursday seems to be the main offender but they still have showers Friday 50% and Saturday (no percentage yet).
Check out the rain and winds Thursday
Thursday Rain. High near 55. Breezy, with a south wind around 29 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Thursday Night Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Thursday will be a good day to stay home. Dogs, wife, fires upstairs and down. Work on topos. Make sure work calls and emails are caught up. Drink coffee. Make fun of friends on Mudn'Crud....

Well I almost missed the Stevens Canyon Ice season. I will keep checking the flow in case these temps keep cool and enough rain gets the spring flowing.
Last weekend there was not enough water dripping for it to form up all the way.
Now I just need Munge to belay me...

Brad - did you guys get over a foot of snow? (I'm too lazy to check)
Looks like they picked a good weekend to have a climbing comp at the gym (Saturday) :yesnod:

Whoa, they make crustacean blow up dolls? Wacky.

Eight inches of snow by about 10:00 a.m. Then it turned warmer/wetter and essentially stopped accumulating.
Supposed to get up to two more feet over the next 30 or so hours. But hey, at least Joel helped me get the (now fixed) snowblower back up here this afternoon.
-
Brad, shout next time if you need one in a pinch. Can't guarantee getting up or down East ave is fun, but its closer than Sonora. At least you get to hang with Joel. :)
F4, Stevens Canyon adventures! Now we're talking. ;)

Munge, you could do the public a favor and just blow snow until you're up here ::)
School's canceled today. Tricia gets her fourth three-day weekend in a row (two president's day weekends and two snow-day weekends).

I could use a few snow days.

Yes MungeI never told you about finding ice in the canyon. By the road, very thin. I have a picture somewhere of me on it..at night.
I think you would be a swell guy to take your blower over to brads.

Are you skeeching?
-
Are you skeeching?
I guess I should explain that since you California guys probably didn't grow up around icy and snow covered roads. When I was younger (a rowdy teenager), we used to hide along the side of an icy road at night just before a stop sign. When a car came along (let's change that to vehicle for beano), we would run out, latch onto the bumper and slide along behind it, crouched down on our feet (skeeching). We would hang on until one of several things happened. The car got going faster than we wanted to, we ran out of grip strength, one of our buddies kicked our feet out (rollerball skeeching) or we reached the next intersection. Typically we'd just hang on until reaching the next stop sign and then stealthily drop off and wait for the next vehicle. The drivers usually never knew we were there.
-
Hard to explain, but there is a limestone
Seep along Stevens canyon. When it’s freezing and rainy...the seep freezes.
Only minor issue, it’s along the side of the road....on a corner.
Ice is ice!!

Stevens Canyon has got it all. MTB, rafting, climbing, hiking, and possibly ice climbing!? Well, it is on the Peninsula.

The driveway and my car were snow-free at 6:00 last evening. Pretty big snowfall for one night:

I went out and measured it with a tape measure. That's 15 inches of new snow.
Kinda glad we got the snow-blower back ;) I think I'll exercise a bit this morning.

Of course with all that snow they swallowed, they'll need to pee every ten minutes for the next four hours.

It's all fun and games to them:
in brief, what breed of dog of dog will Brad not own?
-
Cool pics Brad. That is a lot of snow even for a weekend.
JC we used call that Hickey Bobbing. Have no idea why. Sometimes when conditions were right we would do it on country roads that were not paved. We could go miles, the one issue was the occasional rock that would be sticking up that would take you out. We started to deploy 40' sections of rope so you could see stuff coming and have time to react. At least until the driver would get the bright idea to go real fast. Did quite a bit of this with my cousin. She was a bit of a girly girl, but a bit nuts as well. Fun times. God she could laugh, my antithesis.

Saturday tied my best day of skiing ever. The snow at Kirkwood was bottomless pow and the snow was the lightest / driest snow I have ever experienced in Tahoe. It was truly incredible. Sadly no photos or video. It was too good to stop.
The weekend before during the cold snap the ice was good.... :yesnod:
I am very interested in the Stevens canyon ice....
Also I'm officially insane, because I miss Pinnacles after a couple weekends of being away.

Nice ice

Nice shot and congratulations on your recent loss of sanity   :devildevil:

Great skiing at Bear Valley too. Got in a tiny bit of ice early in the year. Noting like that picture. Where was that?

In the Sierra ;)

And so it begins again. March is coming in like a lion and will hopefully fizzle out like a lamb.
Thank you Punxsutawney Phil :prrr: :out:

The rain gauge pushed over 11 inches yesterday.
Pinnacles cannot be considered a desert this year (average rainfall in a desert is 10 inches or less).
There is a winter weather alert for today - snow showers possible.
-
4 to 5 inches on the ground and snow in the forecast for the next week.
-
We finished dinner here and then the power went out.
Two hours off and it's back on. Not bad.
Looking forward to sunshine tomorrow.

Turned the heater off as it was getting too warm.
I know it's a hard life.

Nope, to both.

We had snow at Pinnacles on Tuesday, as well, with over an inch on the ground up in the High Peaks for a number of hours (and with some snow still on the ground higher at North Chalone Peak). I hiked the High Peaks Trail loop as clouds were clearing, then the weather changed into a blizzard of flakes near Condor Crag. It's been more than 10 years since I can remember seeing measurable snow accumulate at the park.

snow has started here. 4 to 6 inches expected

Latest report from Johnny Come Lately;
Crazy amounts of water down there right now.
Small patches of debris washed down into upper parking on the east side at the start of the Bear Gulch/Moses Springs trail.
Bear Gulch trail is a stream again.
Cool flows at the Fern Chamber and Heat Seeking Moisture Missile.
Caves are closed due to flooding and the sounds of the water - wow.
Res is higher than we've ever seen it. There is a big log that got sucked into the overflow pipe and it is restricting the flow of the waterfall on the other side - otherwise the water might be hitting the steps below the dam - or at least shooting up on the lip before the big drop. I told some onlookers they should wade in and remove the log jam. No takers.
Tiny patches of snow along Condor Gulch (past the junction with High Peaks north).
Quite a bit of snow still visible on the mountains to the east and southeast.
Much enhancement of greenery and almost no one in the campground.
Cool temps and more rain in the forecast...
-
^^^
Thanks for the report. Maybe no climbing there for a while :-\
Highly curious here too about how the new rig worked out?
-
Wonder if the great condor chimney has ice in it?
I’d remove the log if Mungie would hold my beer.
Thanks for the update.

Alright, I finally worked through several images of snow at Pinnacles from earlier in the week (on Tuesday)... Thanks to Brad and JC for the photo posting reminders.

Wow!
I'd like to hike there in those conditions some time.
-
Soo good!!! Thx Gavin!
-
Very Nice
-
Not bad.
-
Those are really cool Gavin - thanks.
I never imagined it being more than a light dusting.
I knew it was forecast to snow but figured there was no way it would stick since the ground wasn't frozen.
That scenario is typical back east. I guess I will never totally lose my "back east" way of thinking.
I wish we had jumped in the car and come down for a hike!
-
Yeah, I was surprised how long the snow stuck around... When we started out on trail I figured it would melt by the time we got up into the High Peaks, but it stayed cold with clouds moving in and out. We got hit by some nice blizzards of snowflakes up near Condor Crag and the Fingers... Definitely a good day to be walking in the park.
-
Cool photos!

Great photos

Wonderful images, Gavin! Holmgren and I lucked into a similar day twenty-five years ago, but neither of us had a camera.
-
Gavin... those photos WOW WOW WOW.
Almost a tear to my eye.
Shes a beauty!!
-
I saw what was for me a new high-water mark at the reservoir yesterday. I've seen it with eight or so inches of water on the trail on the far side of the dam. Yesterday it had around 18 inches (above the level of the trail). I had a hard time crossing Bear Creek above the reservoir, even 100 feet upstream of the "normal" high-water mark.
Yeah, yeah, "invalid without Pics." I didn't stop for shots; I had research to attend to.
-
You do know its raining, right?
I'm here to help with the obvious. I have a rank that befits my observational powers too!
;D

There has been another three quarters of an inch at Pinns since then and crazy winds (40mph) last night.
The gauge is still showing wind in the 30mph range. The wind woke me up at 2:00 this morning.
-
Yeah, we got another half inch of rain at the park last night. It has been mostly light drizzle today, but there is more serious rain coming down at the moment.
In regards to high water marks at the reservoir - yep, it is full right now, and the debris on the sides of the dam and trail was pushed there during the last rainstorm a couple weeks ago. The last time I remember it being that high was 10-15 years ago.
Thanks to everyone for remarks on the photos - I'm glad people are enjoying them.
-
Keep up the photos Gavin.
-
Well there's a new one.
I've been giving Munge a hard time on the SPH site. His last response included a comment that Highway 108 is "closed."
Since he's obviously just a kid, and still at heart a B.A.P., it was obvious that he didn't mean "closed." He meant R-3 chains or something like that.
Um, obvious B.A.P. status aside, he's right. Goddamn if Highway 108 isn't closed from the east Twain Harte entrance to above Strawberry (at the normal winter-time closure point). Because of snow. They can't keep up with it.
I haven't ever seen anything like that up here ever.
-
I read online that Mammoth has more total snowfall this year than anywhere in the continental US. "snowiest February on record with over 14-22 FEET"

Damn that is a lot of snow.
We will visit this season for sure.

You're making me feel very fortunate to be out in the sun today spinning on the wheel in 50 degrees.
Probably take a drive and a hike along the coast somewhere tomorrow.
Will we go north? Will we go south? Decisions...decisions.

Wow - keep looking at the forecast for Pinns esp since the sun is supposed to be out the next couple days.
Right now the forecast is for temps in the high 20's the next 2 nights with frost in the am and highs of 50 - Brrrrr! :yikes:  :arf:

Dang, that is a lot of snow. Common though, buy your wife a winter jacket for Pete's sake.

She'd just stepped outside for a moment to provide scale for my photo.

We had a fun day at Devil's Slide yesterday walking the now defunct section of Highway 1 (now a "hiking" and biking path) and then up into San Pedro headlands. The views were crystal clear. We could see the Farallon Islands, the Golden Gate towers, Point Reyes and many other natural and man made features. The new path allowed me to finally examine all the faults and folds closeup and without distraction.
Here is a link to visit via aerial photos - you can travel the whole coast and download images for free! Great resource  :yesnod:

There is an old bicycle road built early 1900's that goes from hwy 1 to the Bay side. A bit over grown.

Re-post up the video of the trail.

What?! - Looks like it actually rained a little today at Pinns. Severely isolated showers here along the coast and those same type of bursts must have hit further inland. A break in the rain you say? Yeeeeess crudhopper. It is almost time for you to leave... :yesnod:   :ihih:

Dammit. Well, I'm going anyway.

Yeah, it rained more than a little bit - I led up a technical search & rescue training at Back Door, and our team of 10 people got drenched by rain and hail. At first it looked like scattered showers, but got more serious as the day went on.
We can use the rain, but I'll be glad to see some sun and slightly warmer temps for climbing!

I'm ready for it to be Pinnacles climbing season again!

You can't climb Pinns with skis on your feet.
-
Around 1985 or so, Lincoln Hatch and I got caught by hail - lots of hail - in the Desperado chimney at this time of year. We were clad in tee shirts and wind jackets, so shaking made our chimney moves exciting. It was quite a project to escape via the ledges on Machete's south face.
-
Gavin,
May I ask your permission to post your pictures of Pinnacles covered in snow to supertopo, or suggest you post them there for yourself?
Way too cool. Credit should be given where due!
Thanks for sharing them here anyways!!!

BAZINGA!
and Waldo, you got to have some pics of the adventures somewhere, yah? Start opening boxes! Let's see more!

I’m not at the Pinnacles!!
More pictures as Mr Mud needs a reminder of a warmer climate.

Will enjoy that first day above 50 degrees. May have met a FA partner, it is at least a possibility. The person seems to like adventure.

Let me interpret what Mud is saying above.
He is volunteering at a local hospital. One of the comatose patient's (he talks and reads to) eyelid twitched when he said the words 'first ascent'.
-
;)That is cool Mud. What are the prospective routes like?
-
Clink...route prospects are SOGGY!!
I sure hope Mr Mud is bathing now that it’s warming up.
-
F4 actually has the correct answer. It is wet up here, if it isn't wet it has a snow approach. It was snowing when I left the house and raining when I got to work. Very wet year. I was getting out a little bit but right now the whole region is soaked.
Some of the stuff is cragging stuff. Other stuff is more Alpine adventure. Hopefully will get in a couple of FA's this summer. We will see how the rope coils.
-
I made it out to the Pinns for the first time this year. It was nice to see so much water flowing everywhere. The rocks were surprisingly dry if not a little cold to the touch. Did two new first ascents up at the Crud in Mud Formation.

Whoops, I missed your post before.
For now, maybe just link to page 14 of this thread where I have the photos rather than posting them directly on supertopo... Then we can draw some more climber traffic to M 'n C. I'm always a bit paranoid (as a photographer that sometimes sells his work) of my images getting posted on other sites without permission or photo credit... I've seen some of my images turn up for sale on other folks' websites. It's one reason I don't post my work more widely on different sites.
-
Yeah Gavin, I've read that if you post up on social media, it's hard to sell to publishers or them folk.
Just give us the crappy ones, we have low standards.
-
Rock was dry yesterday but now it is wet again.
The park rain gauge is about to tip 16 inches!
-
Yep, more rain this morning, and gray clouds throughout the day. It looks like tomorrow (Sunday) will be clear and beautiful (i.e. crowded), but then a chance of rain throughout the week. Great to see the hills looking green and with a great variety of flowers blooming now.
-
Rain, Rain,
Go away;
Come again,
April day;
Little Johnny wants to play.

Hope the rain melts the snow.
Pins might be the spot for memorial weekend.
-
Got rained out and the day with Brad was cut short today.
Home early but had fun yesterday in the High Peaks.
-
climbed in the rain today it never really rained hard, just sprinkles.. Took my intern climbing for his first day on rock. He was previously strictly a gym climber. He got in his first lead, was not a hard route but he did just fine. We wrapped up with some traverses and explored a new crag.
-
Annnnd...
It's snowing here this morning. Thankfully it's not really sticking (at least not yet).
I vote for El Diablo.
-
At the house? Yeah!
-
It's raining off and on here on the coast and I see that Pinns got almost half an inch the last 24 hours (yesterday morning and again last night). Forecast isn't especially promising over the next couple weeks (more rain? really?) but that seems to be on par with this whole year.
Pins might be the spot for memorial weekend.
No doubt.
Temps are still forecast to be cool the next couple of weeks.
I forecast there will be an increased frequency of orange coloration on the Crud. :yesnod:   :ihih:

Are folks heading to the Pinns next weekend or Sonora?
Camping at the Pinns sounds tempting.

Some to both I am sure. Brad said he was going to take a drive and scope things out.
Biting flies are out at Pinns but not too bad so far (Kat might disagree) - skeets too but also not bad yet.

This morning the snow is sticking to roofs and covering cars. Just a dusting.
I looked at the calendar though, and it's MAY. May. The California Constitution guarantees sunshine all month.

Rain was back as of 3:30pm yesterday afternoon at Pinns - should have headed back down for the day with temps only in the 60's - shoulda coulda woulda...
I was out solo on Friday to replace a rebolt that went spinner on Punctuation's anchor and patched some holes on the Lichen to Lead rebolt (I forgot my patch material on the previous outing). It's all nice and purdy now :yesnod:
It's pouring off and on here today with mixed rain and hail plus thunder and lightning (historic?).
Looks like we might get a break mid-week with more cools temps on the way...can you hear the impending tapping? :ihih:

Don't we just love a cold, snowy March day sitting at home relaxing?
Yeah, but I just took this photo... and isn't it mid-May?

Sun is out today
Sun is out here too - finally.
Thought for sure we would lose power.
Hoping to get out for a uni spin when the road dries out.
Spending some time in the kitchen and also doing an accounting of boltery.

Raining SUPER hard in Taiwan....thunder and lightening too. Apparently I brought the weather with me....

Rain in Taiwan is better than no rain and the heat.
Which city are you in?
-
Taichung. Yes it has been much better than heat.

Taichung, we were there in Feb, there and Zhubei/Hsinchu and Taipei.
I was impressed how much growth had go on since we were last there 10yrs ago.

Yeah JC I am muddling camping Sat-Sun.
I'll have to have James belay me with the grigri...
-
Did you climb at Long Dong?
Not on this trip. Pretty much all work. I did climb at a gym in Taichung.
I'm hoping on later trips I'll have more time to explore. Long Dong is on the list.
-
Yeah long dong is a bit far from where you are. A few trains.

Can you hear the crackling sound coming from Pinns?
It was 1 degree shy of triple digits today. :yikes:
Maybe it will quick fry some of the files to a crackly crunch! :yesnod:   :out:

And yes, nice and crispy. So that we can put them in our salads with our ticks.

Seems appropriate to resurrect this thread about the weather lately.
This year we are officially in the La Nina part of the Pacific Oscillation.
Maybe I should start a new thread - "CA Feast or Famine" since that is the long term pattern/climate here.
The recent rains tore through Pinns and did a bit of damage.
The west side was closed for a couple days while the water receded and while they cleared the Juniper Canyon trail of a downed tree. There is now a new balance beam across the creek for those inclined.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3eRQRw_cvWUFWgBVi21DqZlxa8UJufzCAyBSBkvel_drli9GqkP3BMFU6NQh_YGXr0Y1bqryyX5wDdRo5hlyqjPdFiAvw1fB08c8nPyuwnybE1FkJbGJC4WwRf98SUYxqFphOtgSrw7y5eYcQ_5LeUn=w812-h609-no?authuser=0)
The water ripped down the center of the Juniper Canyon trail in the upper steep sections and flowed along it as a braided stream in the lower reaches. There were tell-tale piles of debris and new gullies where the water ripped down slopes at the first availability. It would have been wild to be there to observe - a few hours after the days-long deluge started.
Undermining in the lower reaches - freshly carved stream banks along the trail - since it served as a braid of the stream when the main channel couldn't handle all the flow. :yikes:

Gosh JC what a mess you made!
You gotta be more careful.
Thanks for the report.
At least it didn’t washout the west side campground.
Oh wait, that’s long gone.
