It was like a horror show today at Pinns - but more like Amityville than F the 13th.
The biting flies started swarming me as I gained altitude on the Chalone Peak Trail. There must have been at least 20 of them swarming my head and face and relentlessly biting me and drawing blood. They were landing in my ears and getting behind my safety glasses. I have only experienced something like this twice before in my life. Once in Canada - black flies - and midges in Scotland. Bug spray is useless. They just laugh, light and bite.
One crawled through the vents on my helmet and was biting me in the forehead while I was rope soloing - unreal.
(Insert clink forehead joke here).
I went to the res and it was fine there. After a snack break - I headed up Gertie’s trail to see how bad they would be. They weren’t as bad at Ridge Rock but got worse just by moving up a little to Skywalk. They continued to bite my arms but couldn’t get to my head as easily after I deployed the fly guy kaizen. I went back to the res after checking a few things out and decided to call it.

In other news, I noticed someone had tried to steal the little metal climber access/biner sign from Gertie's approach.
They managed to pry loose all but one nail.
They also tagged the post.
They had a new Frog sign at the res - hard to read with the letters on the picture.
Would be better with a caption at the bottom imo (the text is printed on top of/superimposed on a really nice picture).
And what thread would be complete without mentioning…drum roll please…
That’s right! - Birdbrain Pinnacle is once more available for pleasurable ascents – without swimming.
