I booked group site 134 for the last weekend of April. Friday April 28th to Sunday the 30th.
It looks like it has a big tree and is listed as partial shade if the temps are warming up by then.
The A loop sites we had last year were all taken.
I checked the weekend of the 21st and there were no group sites.
Crazy how far ahead these things book.
-
I'm blown away on several levels:
- That people would be thinking about the spring of next year already;
- That they'd have planned a weekend of camping that far ahead;
- That they would have thought to actually make reservations;
- That you were thinking that far ahead too (actually, reading that last one, it doesn't quite say what I mean ::) )
We just put it on the calendar. I'll get you some money to help defray the cost next time I see you (along with a replacement guidebook and your tools).
Thanks.
-
I booked it and booked !!9. and 24
-
If someone would mow all the plants in the Monument so that there are no allergens, I'll be there!
-
I am in! I just reserved Site 22, which is my favorite site. There is space for a second car and two more people.

Dude - how can we enjoy your pancakes if you are in another site. We booked a group site so we could all be in one spot.
-

Dude - why did you book another site - we can have 20 at the group site.
-
I'm in for a spot in the group site with 2+ kids in tow. Lemme know if I should send money to someone.
-
60 persons may be there. My granddaughter occasionally enjoys a 2am game of tag in the tent. Can they stay next to you in the group site? We can all lounge at the group site.

You can just give me some dough at the site.
Glad you can make it.

This is the Masters of Mud weekend. You might want to consider a different weekend for the Masters of Breeding

JC has crossed the line. I will now have to hide a ripe diaper in his tent.

Um, we're reconsidering the group site at this time.
-
Brad, you are safe from retaliatory actions. For those who say disparaging remarks about my Irish American Catholic heritage, beware!
-
2x group sites, nice.
It will be warm at the end of April..

maybe I'll bring a kids tent, throw in any child under the age of 10, let them all work it out among themselves between 10PM and 6 AM ;D

Your posts were not displaying correctly on my computer, I assumed you had sites 34, 9, and 24. Ok, I will see if I can sell my site reservation to someone else so I can be at the group site. I think you need to repost to make sure everyone understands that a group site has been reserved.

Not sure what this is all about Mark. I quoted my first post in the thread.

Aw...poor baby...maybe you should stay home with an ice pack! :yesnod:  :puke:

Mj, great idea. Be even better if we gag and tie up JC and deposit him in the mix. >:D
-
If F4 can't make it, we should cancel the event.
-
I am just the voice of reason.... ;D
We will be there. Just watch out what you ask for.
Clink, I hope you bring 1/2 a pig. Lucas can consume bacon like it's candy.
We just need Mungie to attend, if he has not left for Canada.
If he does go to Canada, I got 1st dibbs on his routes.
Will the bearded wonder make an appearance?

Ripe Diaper.
Sounds like a good name for one of your routes...or...wait...maybe that was mine  :yesnod: :yikes:

I asked the Chance brothers about Mungie. They confirmed my suspicions.

Thanks for getting the site JC. Dina and I will be there!

Munge picks up Mud at the airport and brings him down on Friday night. Both arrive and are greeted as heroes.
What's not to like. Munge, Mud, get it together and make it happen.

Mungie already said he has allergies and I think that may also be the weekend that Mud takes his Spring bath  :frown2: :devildevil:

Lastly is Joe, he will need a ride or else he will have to bike there.
Very tragic.

only if the reservoir is full

Good point Mud. The reservoir will be perfect for swimming then.
Get a running start and do a cannon ball into it.

My friends from the Metalmark Gym are going to pick up my site, so I will be at the group site. JC, I will be doing my oatmeal pancakes. If you are going to make event t-shirts, which I hope you do, I would like to get a large size.

Sorry dude - no plans to make t-shirts. Noal is the genius behind that and he may still have some leftovers.
-
I have some smalls and mediums left. I do have a new slogan for a t-shirt:
"It's a rock quality thing. You wouldn't understand."
but alas, my shirt making days are over.
-
Ok, but that won't work because I wear a large size. I like the slogan. Pfff, solid rock is for sissies!

sweet!!! I thought I didn't deserve one tho. :-[
Can't climb this weekend at Pinns, but we need to get back to biz at Balconies! You got any time off around xmas holidays?
-
Yes. Would be nice to check that out again with a fresh pair of eyes.
-
You must send.

I would stamp that one Return to Sender  :yikes: :puke:

I'm proposing a mud wrasslin' extravaganza at this year's event.
The following matches should provide a good amount of entertainment.
Tuff Chik vs Crux Luv
JC vs Mr Mud - I will go ahead and concede/forfeit right now.
Brad vs Climberdude
and the main event...drum roll please...
clink vs NOAL
-
No way! :puke: I'm a lover not a fighter.
-
Funny JC. I would be concerned with wrestling "lover boy". The dude has core strength and is too nimble on his feet. Dangerous.
-
No way! :puke: I'm a lover not a fighter.
Not sure clink is feeling the love.
He requested that he be allowed to have a tag team partner.
This could evolve into a cage match! :yesnod: :yikes:

Bring it on! While you guys were blowing up the forum on a rainy afternoon, I was recruiting.
Caleb said that I don't look as fat as usual in that pic.
-
Sign Calvin and me up as definitely hopefully. Possible Mrs. LEFH, too, depending on work schedule (only 1 tent, regardless).

Cool. We'd love to finally meet you guys.

Awesome! Perfect timing, I'll just be getting back from a two week trip to Tucson.
If there is still room, I'm in!

still room for my 2.3 crew?

Time to bulk up!
Am there, am that. Last night we had spaghetti and chocolate chip cookies! Who says red wine and milk don't mix, wait 45 minutes for dinner to settle before dessert.. Yummy!
-
Not long! :)

With this year's above average precip are mosquitoes a concern at all, or is Pinns still too dry for them?

Did you camp the last few years?
They are menacing.
Embrace the Deet.
Julius says he loves his head net rig.

Did you camp the last few years?
Not at Pinnacles. And they've never bothered me on the trail. But I've never been sedentary at the low-land campgrounds. I'm mostly just wondering how deep I'll have to burrow my head in my sleeping bag if my wife comes and she and Calvin take up both spots in my 2 man tent.

They have been bad but only for a limited time and temperature range. They come out and eat you alive for a few hours and then it gets too cold and they go away. It usually cools off enough in the shade that you can put on long sleeves and pants and mostly douse your clothes with bug juice to keep them away. Might I suggest upgrading to a 3 person tent? :yesnod:
-
I think J.C. is talking about a different Pinnacles than I know. But then I thought he was being overly sensitive about poison oak too... until I saw his hand just before he climbed and named "Prednisone Pinnacle."
Mosquitos? Only a very few in the evenings (excluding the tons of them that exist in my wife's imagination). You're young and tough, and it's worth any price if your wife comes along. You'll be fine.
-
Thanks guys. I think I'll split the difference and consider this a light warm up to the expected mosquito hell that will be the High Sierra this summer. ;D
-
I'm only in for Saturday. Have to travel Sunday.

It works wonders! Provided you get comfy looking through mesh.
But if not, Deet works wonders too. As paint stripper.
My plan B is a flamethrower, but no one seems to be ok with that...
-
My plan is to keep someone that attracts skeeters more than I do nearby. It works well with the flies too. :)

Nah, that only works with bears (you're safe as long as there's someone in your group that you can outrun). With bugs there's just too many of them.

Hey, why didn't anyone get back to Crux?
I think we've got one of the full-size group sites this year. There should be plenty of room for all comers. We'll hope for your attendance.
-
Hey, why didn't anyone get back to Crux?
We talked to her in person

BTW. I pulled out one of the shirts Noal made a couple years back for MOM. They are the coolest ever!

Weekend is looking good.
Here is a list of confirmed and maybes.
Brad, Vicki, Tricia

clink and clan
mj and 2 kids
Aaron and Dina
looks easy from here, wife and Calvin
CruxLuv
Sean P
Talg

beano, baby beano and Jesse
Lydia and Cheryl (friends of beano)
Victoria and Karinn (PCAD)
Amber
Julia and Caroline (partner w Kat at Pac Edge)
yosomighty + Nicole and the boys
Rosie?
the Kid?
-
Vicki and Tricia may be coming with one or two other climbers (from up here).
Also, I'm pretty sure 5 or 6 U.C.S.B. Excursion Club kids are coming (alas though, not Katie to my knowledge).
Brian and Whitney are coming (I think camping with us), as are Dawsons (no idea if they are camping).
-
Oh and Waldo confirmed, although I think he is only camping on Saturday night.
-
Jeremy Hadland and 2 daughters a
will be camping . He booked 2 sites.
-
I'm in for Saturday. Mike Russell, one of my first climbing partners (vintage '76) will join us also.
-
Pretty sure King is down for two nights.
-
Thanks for the updates re who's coming.
Folks have been asking about money and food.
There is no plan for meals but in the past this has not been a problem.
Plenty of sharing and socializing.
As far as the money goes, the group site was 110 a night to reserve (220 for 2 nights) so sliding some cash our way would be greatly appreciated.
I checked the camp website yesterday and fires were still allowed but they also say they can revoke that at any time. Things have been drying out quickly the last few weekends.
Kat and I will bring our propane fire ring.
The ground is getting very hard and dry and the grass is getting brown.
PO is rampant and is starting to encroach on hiking and approach trails.
I had the first fly bite me last weekend.
Ticks are out in force mostly in the morning. Wearing light colored clothes is a big plus for spotting those little blood suckers. They seem to retreat once it heats up.
Potential awards this year?
Most bug bites - Master of Blood
Over imbibing in camp - Master of Suds or Buds?
Too many tubers? Master of Spuds
No show after talking it up or really well dressed - Master of Duds?
-
Nice JC.
-
Calvin and I are in for Friday-Saturday.
-
Is anyone going to start Saturday early at the upper lot, and wants to go to crud n mud?
I have to make it a short day, so starting early and back early (and can't wait for a shuttle when the place jacks up with tourists).

Hey Munge - KC and I (at least) are in.
It'll be great to see you. :)
Upper lot at 7:00, if we don't see ya sooner.
Damn tourists.
-
I'm bringing a bag of climbing shoes that we need to give away. These are generally smaller shoes (kids mostly) that the girls grew out of and/or that have been left at our house over the years with no sign of the owner.
Anyone who is interested please help me remember to not just leave it sitting in the car....

Sweet! Sounds good Thanks for the update John! See you this weekend.

Everybody I have talked to is heading down tomorrow at various times.
Might be some gym folks coming Saturday.
-
They keep jacking up the temps on the forecast and they are often off (low) by about 5 degrees when it starts heating up.
Temps currently forecast in the low 80's for Saturday and Sunday.
Lows near 50.
Gusty winds tomorrow and tomorrow night (20+ mph) so a wood fire will be out for Friday night.
We are taking our propane fire ring.
They might allow fires Saturday night but things are getting really dry really fast - except the PO. :yikes:
We're not taking any firewood.
-
As dry as your humor?
-
Hey Brad, Jesse wants to know what's the optimal inseam for climbing at Mud N crud this weekend. He has everything from about 16" to 0:

I'm out. Sorry. Work incident I can't be out of range.

I bet everyone had a good time. /he said mopingly
Please post pics of climbing.
-
Missed you dude. Next time.
-
Thx, bummed to have missed it. Definitely!
-
Thanks to all that made MoM 2017 a blast.
clink, yosomighty and I got out Friday and the two of them climbed some hard stuff – Shades of Madness and Blowing Chunks, while I worked on the anchor for Onomatopoeia. It was right around 3 and I was sitting at the base of Onomatopoeia, yosomighty was on the summit of the Knee and clink was working his way up when we felt an earthquake and heard a sonic boom. Pretty cool since I climbed Boom! to access Onomatopoeia’s summit.
The day had started with some silliness and ended with good food, good drinks and great friends back in camp.

Yesterday we struck more gold at Crud and Mud (Pay Dirt 5.7***).
I was pleased to get the coveted second ascent this morning (after following Jeremy’s top out yesterday) and before adding the finishing touches this morning. Brad, Kat, climberdude and Hope seemed to enjoy it thoroughly.  :yesnod:
I should also mention how proud I was of Kat for her leads yesterday while I was busy working on the new route. She was on fire leading the 4th Class Route (actually5.2), Just Chute Me 5.6*, Squeaky Clean Mud 5.6** and for the grand finale...mud roll please...Mud Diamond 5.7*** :yesnod:

According to the USGS, the earthquake was a magnitude 2.9 centered 22km NE of Soledad at 3:34 p.m. :yesnod:

I told yosomighty to get ready for more after the first shock hit.
Now I know why we barely felt the next wave.
-
Do you remember how finishing your first lead at Pinns felt? :yesnod:
This was Julia’s first lead ever. We got her started off right with Ashes the Mud and I 5.5**.

beano follows Mud Bath and you can see the ledge clink used to get Pay Dirt going (in the foreground). That cobble sticking up at the far end of the ledge is amazingly solid!

I forgot to mention that with the addition of Pay Dirt there is now a 6, 7 , 8 , 9 sequence of grades from left to right on that wall. Eureka!

That thing was loud.

That is cool. A 4 grade progression.
Julia was stoked, congrats on the first lead!
-
I wondered why the lull and then the phone rang at 7:30 this morning. It was Brad.
He got up early and ran up to False Flatiron. He was calling me from up there to talk about my new routes.
I may have to go out tomorrow and do another FA - Phoney Pinnacle
-
Ever wonder why the group sites are so hard to reserve?
Kat was talking to the group in the next site over and they said they book that same site for the next year when they leave the park. They do it every year.
I really liked the site this year except for a couple of things.
There was no nearby water spigot, trash or recycle.
There were porta potties instead of a permanent bathroom facility.
The parking lot had us boxed into a dead end.
As a result I went ahead and booked site 127 for next year. It is the first group site on the right as you drive back.
It has a big tree, it is right across from the bathroom and the parking should be much easier.
Easter is the 1st weekend in April and the next weekend is Friday the 13th so I did the 3rd weekend starting on 4-20.
Party on Garth...Party on Wayne  :yesnod:  :yesnod:
-
JC, you are the MAN!
-
Nice pix juan! Glad there's reception on the FF - Finally, somewhere I can reliably tweet all those anchor selfies that I take such time to pose for.
Good to get the closer site - I think there's more parking there too.
-
Yes, excellent weekend. Alas though, definitely the end of my Pinnacles season (I had pleasing mental images of both granite and driving a lot less on the way home tonight).
Over the course of the weekend I:
- Had a great time with friends and family (made a few new friends too);
- Ate well (thanks Vicki, Nicolle, Martha, Alacia and Caleb);
- Had a few beers (thanks Bob and Jon);
- Documented 14 new routes (some new this weekend, others up to a year old);
- Got in 11 new leads;
- Got back into "status;" as of today I've done every route at Pinnacles easier than 5.10; and
- Laughed long distance while in the High Peaks yesterday and today (conversations with J.C. and with Mud himself).
In other news, I returned home a little while ago to learn that, among other family business, another Junior boy asked Tricia to the prom. He's a boy, and so he is suspect at best. But imagine the courage it took to ask her, only to learn that she'd already been asked and had accepted. I almost feel sorry for the little punk.
Alright now, granite here we come. Who's with me?
-
And really nice going on reserving already for next year J.C. That's an excellent group site.
-
I had pleasing mental images of both granite and driving a lot less on the way home tonight.
Alright now, granite here we come. Who's with me?
You are banned for life for mentioning the it word (twice) on a MoM thread. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :out: :prrr:

Form a line fellows.

I am looking forward to the cooling breeze on the north side of a pinnacle in July, empty outskirts. Noal, what have you been doing?

Just for using the word granite? You know that granite isn't an inherently bad thing don't you?
Banned for life seems excessive. How about, as punishment for using the word granite, instead of a banning, we agree that some dork will go out and establish a new Pinnacles route, thus shattering my often-shattered record regarding sub-5.10 routes (although that record isn't held on granite).
Yes, some dork. Probably one who's actually put up new climbs on granite. And even occasionally climbs that form of rock voluntarily. He'll probably be laughing as he does it.
All for mentioning granite.

That is 6 more times.
I'm calling Broken Arrow and retreating to the safety of Pinnacles  :yesnod:   :devildevil:

Brad is retired from mud for the summer.
I love that pic JC.

Do we want a 2nd Group site to spread out?

...I'm calling Broken Arrow...
So that was two clear references to American military history. I'm curious if those are just sayings you've heard and use or if you know the history behind them?
-
They are also Pinnacles references.

I used those specifically for you
