Title: Mud verses mountain lion?
Post by: clink on May 21, 2018, 10:59:34 AM
Mud frequents the area where the mountain biker was killed by the lion.

I would bet on Mud escaping with a few bites/claw marks and his life.

Any additional precautions in mind for your next ride in that area Mud?

Camo biking outfit (spandex leggings - no shorts - or if shorts have legs camo tatooed) and new camo paint job.
Make vegetable broth based spray to douse yourself before each ride.

No precautions.  I do ride occasionally in that general area.  Up river from there I do a fair amount of solo "exploring".  Will  not be taking any precautions with the exception to remain my normal ornery self.  Most of the area's I have been hitting up if something was to happen it would most likely take a while to find the body.  They would start with finding the car.  With the bicycle stuff they would find the car then the bike.  Hound dogs should work unless it is raining.  Best of luck and

What a sad event. Where I grew up...that was the one animal we always suspected was around. Especially around the Crystal Springs area where I ran in collage since that was a nature preserve.

Glad I only ran into the occasional BobCat.

At least Mr Mud has a dog, who would smell the cat.

I think Mr Mud needs to buy a Glock.

for the price of a Glock I could by a new rack.

Only take the dog when exploring, not when putting in routes or climbing up stuff or rapping down stuff.  Do not trust him enough to not jump off.

When rappeling are you placing bolts? I hear it’s the most efficient way to establish a route.

I have not rap bolted a route as of yet, but I am seriously contemplating it.  I am also looking at some solo belay devices.

For some of the stuff I am definitely rapping in to inspect prior to bolting.

I have a device, used twice, you may have.

Just strap a kettle bell on the front of your harness and climb. It will give you the same feel and sense of suckurity.

Once you go down, you may not want to place on lead.

I still think you need a Glock.

If you are set on pink, check out the pink leopard spot ones. They would look good on you.

Yes, after all of these years I am still trying to get Mr Mud to say I am Sport Climber.

The best chance I EVER had was at his place in LaHonda, but Mud Worm was quick to realize his computer was unlocked.

Carry on with the obsession with Pink.

Wait, I have been practicing barking all these years for fending off mountain lions and are you guys saying it's out of fashion now?

I learnt it from Mr. Mud years ago. He told me that when he was riding solo in the Bermuda triangle of Henry Coe in the middle of a dark night, he spotted a pair of eyes. Feeling the hair standing up on the back of my neck, I asked him what he did at that moment. "I barked!"

Seems legit for Mud. Though in my case, I tend to bark at the moon not eyes in the forest.

Well, clearly Mud's bark is worse than his bite.

Barking should always be the default action.  Works everywhere even dark alleys.  Trust me.

In a dark alley, barking your shins is likely.

Not much meat on Mr Mud, I bet the mtn lion would pass on him.

The condors have been waiting for his return to the Monument.
