Title: Question about shutdown.
Post by: Zay on January 21, 2019, 06:42:56 PM
So the west entrance is closed...

If someone was to park a vehicle and bike to chaparell parking...

Frowned upon?

They’re keeping a close eye on the road, escorting folks out who are walking, and not keen on cars parking outside the gate.  Good luck if you decide to ride the gauntlet.

Vicki and I were in the area Friday and so drove up to the West Side entrance to look around. While parked just outside the gate, we saw a group of six people park an SUV also outside the park. They then walked in, along the road. Minutes later they came back, walking back up the road with a law enforcement ranger in his truck slowly driving behind them. Vicki and I stayed there for a little while (our room at the inn wasn't ready yet). The ranger re-appeared on his side of the gate regularly.

I think trying to enter by bike would be equally frowned upon.

BTW, Mrs Skelton told us some stories about you during dinner on Saturday night (I asked her). Apparently you and your brother were nuts about dinosaurs when you were little punks (as opposed to being a big punk, which is likely what you are now)? Or did she have the wrong Isiah from Mariposa who's dad is named Rick?

Brad,
BAHAHAHAHA yes I was NUTSO about dinosaurs when I was little... early nineties. I'm glad she had nothing to say about me as an artist, as she was my art teacher for freshman year of High School. I think I behaved for her, relatively speaking.

Dad was on the mainland a few weeks ago, we did some climbing in the Valley. He wanted to go see Ron but I made him climb with me.

Looks like I will NOT be climbing volcanic Breccia anytime soon :( :( :(

What makes you think that what I described above is an exhaustive list of all that Mrs Skelton had to say?

I believe it was during a Gingrich shutdown (at least 25 years ago) that Holmgren and I decided that politics shouldn't get in the way of our recreation. We met in Soledad early, drove one car up to just past the small vineyard beyond the Chalone Vineyards turn and parked there. We walked up the road, found the fence and followed it a mile or so until it hit a ridge. We took the ridge to the High Peaks and had a fine, if lonely, day of climbing. Upon our return to the hillside above the road we discovered that we'd attracted four law enforcement rangers and two cruisers. Holmgren remarked, "Hey, I thought those guys weren't getting paid!" I shrugged. There's no explaining dedication. Anyway, we went into stealth mode and crawled beneath the bushes. Holmgren was the Lone Ranger and I was Tonto. We stayed mostly quiet, except when we giggled. When we got close to the road, we took a last look We were well past both cruisers and all but one ranger. That one was foot-patroling with back toward us. Time to make our break. We ran jingling (carabiners and cams) to the car, jumped in and roared (well, considering the car, puttered) off toward Soledad. No harm, no foul.

OG fence jumper! Well, fence hiker until you got to the ridge where you could walk round it?  lol  I like this story for some reason. Appeals to my inner libertarian.

Nice story Waldo.

Great to see you got away with it.

Didn't you guys also park right at the gate?

Attracting their attention?

I still wonder if Gavin is running around the E-Side like Rambo..no shirt, bandanna looking for pigs to hunt.

yeah, something like that!!

I tried envisioning a Lord of the Flys, but Rambo is more fitting.

On quite a few summer mornings, we met at the Soledad McDonald's well before dawn, took one car up to the gate, parked just outside of the Monument and commenced hiking via headlamp toward Piedras Bonitas. Even though the place was open, rangers became nervous about our car. We eventually earned our own no parking sign. It was there long after we weren't!

Ah!

Nice!

Now days you could get an Uber to drop you off!!

Pick-up, that would be a bit tricky.

I will never forget the nice young lady that worked the Westside entrance. Munge and I were camping and asked if we could sleep in our cars. Her reply, I don't care.
Such simpler times!!

I got a rude awakening later when I went and discovered she was not there and a more zelous ranger was!!!

That was me?

I only remember a trip with Brad? where we actually camped on West side and threw down sleeping bags, I think?  Whoa, the 90s were a long time ago!

I'm hurt you don't remember our first date.....
You took me up to the high peaks and the W-Front.
We slept in the back of our trucks, until it started to rain and my truck bed became a pool.
I remember because the range said "I don't care what you guys do".....and she was serious.

This. I have a high roof and built my platform only about 8" off the bed. I can actually sit up and change on the platform.

It is the government that calls it a national park.

To me it is a monument to the volcanic activity that has made California.

Plus the map I have says monument..

There was a lady on Jeopardy last night that said she had her DNA tested and it showed a high percentage of Neanderthal.
She had a big forehead.

Make Pinnacles great again, build a wall to keep out the criminal swine, the non-native species!

Oh right, the Park's border has been fenced(excellent and difficult work by John and co.) and the fence is working. What a novel idea.

Now to enclose the trails with clear plexiglass tubes.  >:D

There is a "clean-up" day scheduled today to remove non-native species. They were advertising it on the park's facebook page.
It starts at 1:00 on the east side - so hurry up and get down there!

Clink is right, the monument needs a wal. Not just any wall, but a compassionate wal.

Keep everyone out.

They need to seed the sides of the trails with poison oak. That willl stop folks from pooping on the side of the trail. Or at least they get a nice itch to remind them.

I just wish they would restock to reservoir with fish.

Fish you ask?....yes, there used to be catfish in there. But they were eating an endangered frog. So they were removed.

Irony???? My 1st time to the pinnacle, I brought a fishing rod up there and fished...

Litttle did I know, I was right, there were fish in there.

Now I say they plant fish again to make it sustainable for the next shut down.
