Title: Stevens canyon ice season
Post by: F4? on February 05, 2019, 09:25:21 AM
The chilly temps means that the ice in Stevens canyon should be forming up!!

I hope it holds until Saturday.

Edit: it won’t hold. Temps will be warming by Thursday.
Damn!

Where does this ice form? I can check it out after work today to see if it's in.

Up the canyon...before the big limestone boulder (the spray painted one next to a pull out) there is a limestone spring seep. It’s on the blind curve.

The water from the seep will freeze if it’s cold enough.

Back in 98??? We had a hailstorm, and freezing temps.
The seep was frozen nicely.
That might have been a week of cold ass temps.

Hard to get a belay with cars coming by.

Plenty of ice here. Snow too. There's even six inches of snow at my office in Sonora (I'm at home).

Three of us just spent three hours trying to clear the driveway of two feet of snow. The driveway is drivable, although it's filling in again. But the snowplow berm is 3 1/2 feet high and mostly compacted crap. We've got it half shoveled and are inside for a rest and some more coffee.

At least we've got electricity!! Lots of Twain Harte is out and parts of Sonora too.

Love living in the mountains.

Tricia's got a second snow day off from school, and so Vicki and I decided to stay home too.

Meanwhile, here's some ice for you to climb:

At least "February" sounds closer to warm days than "January."

Just recognized how these pics are only taken from the inside.

Did you ski the street?

Or get towed behind a car sitting in your fish white duffel.

Just saying.....

We used to take turns towing each other around on the icy back roads in Eastern Wa.  The person being towed by a car hanging onto a 50 foot  would just wear whatever shoes they had on and hope like heck you do not hit a patch of dirt.  We called it hickey bobbin.  Have no idea where that term came from.  twenty five always seemed like a good speed but of course sometimes we had to up the ante a bit.

Nope. By the time we finished clearing the driveway we were sick enough of snow. I have been playing frisbee/fetch with the girls a lot though. They love, love, love the snow. And heck, to them it's so deep that it's over their heads!

One of the Dad Dudes is towing his kids up and down the road with a 4 wheeler.  They have incorporated a toboggan.  Guess that is the sport climbing version of Hickey bobbin.

One funny part of hickey bobbin is my cousin was really good at.  I think she was a typical country girl, up for anything as long as it was fun and of course she would have to get dolled up first.  Mascara had to be perfect.  Nothing like waiting an hour for someone to get pretty just to tow her 30 miles per hour behind a VW Baja bug.  Thought I killed her once, I was really worried and stopped as fast as I could.  The problem was the bug had studs on the back and she just kept sliding down the road into the car.  She was pissed, she almost went into the exhaust and generator belt.  Five minutes later she is laughing her ass off.  She had a million dollar smile that could light up the entire central valley.  God that girl could laugh.  Those were good times.

Now she is doing casual stuff, you know, like ice fishing

To these girls, the entire snow-blowing session is nothing but a fetch game (from the snowblower chute almost directly into their mouths - and then they have to pee every 20 minutes for the rest of the day).

I am no rocket scientist, but I don’t think solar works when covered in snow.

He's a really hot snowblower who's trying to cool down (so, obviously, he's hot and cool at the same time).

well done on snow pics!

Not for nothing, but your roof looks LOADED!

I'm always curious how much the roofs really can take.

We got a bit of the white stuff too.  Melting off now but more coming.

Mountain Lion tracks in the driveway and across the yard.  Wheeler was going crazy!

The granite in the backyard is not climbable right now...

So off to work ( ski fresh tracks on the mountain  :) )
Though rather chilly driving past Crowley this morning.

Wow, last night we got close to a foot.  Right now it is mixed snow and rain.  And, my dog does not like the snow.  I have to shovel the deck/yard in order to get him to go outside and take care of business.

That's inconceivable! Is he a commie?

Alright, I should get going if I'm going to get any research done....
