Got this pic from Brian Bermingham...
The climber is Dick Ellsworth. 1973.
What route is it?

The original photo may have been in color.

Bushy's Battle of the Bulge?
-
The idea that it was Crumbling Castle was floated. I had my doubts about that.

Doesn't look anything like Crumbling Castle.
Does not look familiar although I haven't done that many old routes.
Can't think of anything that gains a pedestal and then continues up a jelly roll gumdrop.
Looks like a pretty good drop below and it looks like a big formation from the wall in the background...on a slope...

Ok, I had money on JC being able to ID it for us.
Where's Brad?
Here's another pic of the same line with more rock showing...

I've been busy with work and now with a topo.
Lemme look at it, although if John can't get it, I won't likely be able to either.

First guess is Hatchet.
EDIT:
But the rope is coming up from the "wrong" side for Hatchet. And the background hillside seems just a little too steep.
-
oooh, good guess! I can see that. But you're right, the rope needs to be on the left side of the pic.
1973, moderate, from a guidebook at the time, is what I would start limiting by.

Something that traverses in to a pedestal. Only thing I can think of like that is Condor Crag and that is definitely not right.
I just paged through Richards guide and still clueless.
Do you know the answer?
-
... like that is Condor Crag and that is definitely not right.
Agreed - the background shouldn't be so high if it is anywhere on the crest of the High Peaks.
I'm not coming up with anything else.

I think Rob is punking us :yesnod:
-
The shoes are Canyons, comfortable.
-
I think it is The Snail 5.7R :ihih:

I think it is The Snail 5.7R :ihih:
I just looked at some of my pics of The Snail and I can see the lodestone on the pedestal and on the right of the arete.
I am POSITIVE that it's The Snail.
What do I win?  :prrr:

I think it is The Snail 5.7R :ihih:
Yes, that's it.
Funny, the hillside across the way reminded me of that behind The Hand, but I didn't think of anything not on The Hand.
-
Yep. That's why he's looking up and contemplating the R stuff.
-
You can see the prominent squarish lodestone on the pedestal in this pic (same as first old pic)

Here you can see the lightish patch just above the bulge, a lodestone on the right side of the arete (same as both old pics) and that big divot on the right ((same as second old pic).

The GULP moment. :yikes:

Oh well done! I believe you’re right.
I did not know and neither did Brian. Hopefully he’ll see this. I gave him the link to the thread.

You've got it, JC. I got out Roper and Richards to bring tomorrow in hopes that we could discuss this, but the old boys are no longer needed.
