Title: Tricia's Off to College
Post by: Brad Young on December 19, 2019, 08:45:37 PM
Well, not yet, but the suggestion that she should have her own thread was a good one.

She got her second response from a university today. Accepted. Two for two so far.

Which college?

The campfires she's shared with all of us at Pinnacles might comprise an AP class in something!

Just now she heard from the third of five schools she applied to; in this case it's her first choice, numero uno.

And I forgot to answer Kat's question.

But Vicki just put a fantastic looking dinner on the table. Details later...

She’s now been accepted at three out of the three that she's heard from. In order: the University of Idaho, Moscow; Washington State in Pullman, and, heard from tonight, her first choice, (QUACK) the University of Oregon (in Eugene). The Ducks.

I'm pretty sure I know where she's going to end up (man was she smiling).

Wow, this is a weird one to type and have it come out not sounding weird.

Lemme try it this way. Tricia won't need financial aid. In fact, we haven't even considered asking for financial aid. She won't qualify.

This evening she got an email. I'm not sure I can even type the number without sounding crass.

Based only on her GPA and SAT scores, her number one choice is offering her financial aid. A hell of a lot of financial aid. It makes me think that they really want her to attend there.

I know I am biased, but DAMN I'm proud of her.

In other news (is there any other news?), Tricia was accepted to the last school she was to hear from. She got into San Diego State.

But they waited too long... she's already gotten pretty fond of University of Oregon. So, if there is a next year, she's gonna be a Duck.

She's 18 years old today. No fooling.

And life is weird, her senior year in high school seems over early, her sister has moved back home. And she gave us all a great big smile when she woke up this morning.

Happy Birthday to T.  I also wished her HB on FB!  I can't believe she is 18.  I had a memory pop up on FB from 5 years ago when we were all camping and climbing in the Hills.  Time flies!

Also sending birthday wishes to a great young lady.
My condolences on her missing out on all the things she was probably looking forward to this year.
I'm glad she is still smiling.

I doubt it will be any consolation but...

My senior year ended (my last day of class) was on April Fool's day. I always thought that was quite fitting.

There was enough snow on the ground that I wrote a parting message to the school in the parking lot on the way out.

I never had a senior picture taken or participated in any way in graduation.

I read what you wrote to Tricia. She said "wow, John Cook? He dropped out of high school?"

See? You've pulled yourself so far up by your boot straps that people are surprised to hear this.

And thanks for leaving out the juicy parts (although she gets some "juicy parts" from her older sister).

Strange how things can get misinterpreted. I did not drop out.
I had enough credits to leave school a third of a year early. The terms were weird in KY - 3 terms a year.
I coasted through my last year and two thirds but still maintained a B average.

School was different in Ohio too. Junior High was 7-9 and High School was 10-12. I went to 10th in Ohio.

Well, that was an interesting way to spend an 18th birthday. Take out food with mom, dad and sister in the van. To Twain Harte Lake to prop open the doors and watch a beautiful sunset.

None of her friends, no party, no nothing.

Shawn and Julie drove over and chatted though.

I bet she'll never forget it.

That sounds decent.

None of her friends, no party, no nothing.

Looking at the date I realized she turned 18 at the start of 4-20...dude.

You guys were already in a van - all you needed was Scooby and Shaggy  :ihih: :devildevil:

I was pretty annoyed turning 18, since I was old enough to vote and die for my country but still not able to buy a beer (in KY).

I bet she'll never forget it.

Given the circumstances, that will be difficult - but it sounds like you guys made the most of it.

I had to add a word to part of your post. I suspect that it's more accurate this way!?

Believe it or not, I never tried any form of alcohol until about three months after I turned 18.

Let's all keep our fingers crossed for her for the University of Oregon in September. They're planning on live classes, with precautions and possible adjustments.

We are so, so hopeful that this works out and that she and all the students and staff stay healthy (that part of Oregon has really low COVID rates, at least right now). I can't say enough about what a blow it will be if she can't go off to college.

Ya the whole in school vs remote debate is such a hard one. Having people travel from all over the USA to one place (school) in huge numbers seems like such a bad idea, but for her sake I REALLY hope they find a way to do it safely and she can have some form of a "normal" first year of college. Fingers crossed

The school did a good job, given the little flexibility they had to work things. The "drive-by" graduation seemed upbeat:

And, for the finale... the Summerville class of 2020 is the only graduating class in the history of the school that has been allowed to decorate its mortar board caps (Tricia decorated hers in a Lord of the Rings theme with the words "I think I'm quite ready for another adventure"):

Can't imagine a person better prepared for these times than Tricia. Starting college is hard, I have seen most of the young people I know of, struggle, but find their balance and then do well and enjoy college. In these current conditions it will certainly be a greater challenge. Hence the benefit of having lived an adjustable and adventurous life.

Life doesn't hold still for long, have a great year starting college Tricia! (Yes, your parents are not-normal, but in a good way)

Today was the "drop dead" day for the University of Oregon to decide whether classes would go forward in person or remotely.

We're relieved. They're going to go forward with a cautious mix. Freshman will have the option to be present on campus, in the dorms and in (small) classes. Or not if they make that choice.

I like the university president's email and the university's approach. Testing for students on arrival and five days later. Lots and lots of other precautions. It sounds like it's going to be a good balance.

We think it matters a lot for Tricia to be on campus for her first year. And now she can. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed that this thing goes smoothly (toes too?).

Four students on her hall are now in quarantine (in a separate dorm?). Tricia is pissed because those four carelessly went out and about town unmasked.

Meanwhile, the other kid was feeling like she had a cold and took a test just to be cautious. She's COVID positive (!!!) and is in quarantine at her home (pretty sure her untested roommate's symptoms must have been more than a cold).

And the year of the f#$ked just gets more f#$ked.

Nice! Drop one off this weekend.

Let him know ahead of time though that he'll be attending school virtually from here in the mornings.

In the afternoons he'll be applying himself to his homework vigorously and then splitting and stacking firewood. We'll feed him dinner and allow him to pet the dog if he works hard enough.

I'll supply the splitting maul.

The kid's home for the next five weeks. I keep smiling when I look at her. She looks so... so adult.

It's been good apparently so far, but since all the kids are going home for Thanksgiving, they decided it would be bad to then have them come back to campus for two weeks. That seems like a good call to me. So home for both holidays.

And she brought her climbing shoes with her  :D

Tricia just got her grades back for her first quarter at University of Oregon.

She made the Dean's list. And then got an email from the Dean (probably a group email) saying that if she keeps up grades of that level she might qualify for more scholarships.

Well, well, well. She's really taking to rowing. It seems that the team (her team) is to her college time as U.C.S.B. Excursion was to Katie's. She texted us this photo today with the caption:

"Practice 4/12 for spring break and I’ve got some real pretty hand blisters :) 🚣🏼‍♀️ I look like I’ve been in a fight."

I told her: "Yikes, you’re just a little kid. Won’t they eat you alive!? I’m worried about my little girl."

Brad, you can upload it to Youtube and then post it here. If you don't want it fully out in the ether, you can post it on Youtube as "unlisted".

How about I text it to you and you post it? A small favor from her “big brother?”

Thank you Briaham. I just love that video. Tricia is, by the way, fourth from the front in the grey shirt (they're all facing to the rear). I find the green and yellow "O" paddle blades all in unison fascinating.

Combine it all with a 4.0 GPA for her second quarter (she had no advanced classes and so "only" got a 4.0). Good kid.

Well that was a fast year. Our little girl has finished year one and is home for the summer!

I've got a new favorite photo of Tricia (a photo of an Instagram post by the University of Oregon's women's rowing team):

Notice also the seating chart, which I really like.
