I'd like to camp, but climb on machete

If you hike from the campground via the Bench Trail and the Old Pinnacles Trail, you are probably looking at a 2-hour walk to the base of Machete (and another 30 minutes or so from there if you're planning on climbing from the Old Original side). If you're a very fast hiker, maybe a bit less time.

Do you own a portaledge? :)

FWIW It's a flat, painless hike.

Not necessary, unless you crave fresh air. The slightly tilted meadow at the base of the long midway rappels has always tempted me.

Waldo, I say stock a camp up there, some firewood, tent, beer, lots of beer.

Beer is all that's really needed.

Well a thatch of Astro turf, driver and a few dozen golf balls would help pass the time.

Get an early start and park at Old Pinnacles parking area (very limited parking). Hike towards the west side. I often find it is faster to take the Balcones Trail rather than going through the caves. I think Gavin's times could be greatly improved on if you are fast hiker. I would consider up to two hours to the start of Old Original either way.

What about the secret tunnel through the monument?

I agree if you start from the Old Pinnacles trailhead that the hiking time is significantly shorter... But note that I did mention "If you start from the Pinnacles Campground..." and accounted for the extra hiking time on the Bench Trail.
From the Old Pinnacles trailhead, I would say two hours to the start of Old Original is about right, or perhaps a bit less if you are hiking fast.
