There were no decent group sites available by the time I checked a month or so ago. I dropped the ball this year.
I got a cluster of individual sites on the back loop where there is nice grass and open space.
Sites 27, 28 and 29 for the weekend of April 17th/18th.

UPDATE_EDIT - due to the COVID-19 Shelter in Place order we have officially cancelled MoM this year.
No plans to try and reschedule.

Pinnacles may not be there much longer if this rain continues.
In the last 9 days, Pinns has gotten about half the rain for a normal year - although what is normal for California?
There is a long history of droughts and floods - with precip that is difficult to predict from year to year.
4.47 inches so far, which should translate to a great start to the ski season.

No the poison oak is culled via urination.

JC is the man since he goes so much.

I try to do my part when I’m the monument.

Now the real solution is to genetically adjust the deer to like poison oak.

I am going to see a urologist next week
Getting this appointment was a long time coming.
His name is Dr. Green, someone said it should have been Yellow.
If he is overweight,  l may refer to him as a meaty-urologist.
I will let you know how it goes.

Aaron probably still has the cases you guys bought for PCAD two years ago in his basement.

There was good attendance in the campground on Friday with people pouring in by late afternoon.

Maybe check with your meaty-urologist for the long term forecast.

Ah yes, I will see what can be booked.

I surveyed all those sites a while back but failed to take notes (wtf?).
We like 26 too but that one was only available one day when I booked the others.
I chose what I think are the primo sites - big stretches of flat, grassy ground between them and plenty of room for tents.
Based on past attendance, I didn't see any need for more than 3.
One of those sites farther down (30, 31, 32) on the left is a swamp.
I seem to recall continuing down the road into the 50's is just plain bad in terms of decent sites.
The sites across the loop are better - 35 through 48.
If you need to see a copy of the map it's on the NPS site main page under Maps (not anywhere under the campground site).
Good luck.

National Park Service to waive entrance fees at open parks to aid social distancing
By Paul LeBlanc, CNN

Updated 3:48 PM ET, Wed March 18, 2020

Quote
Washington (CNN)Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt has directed the National Park Service to the waive entrance fees at all national parks that remain open during the coronavirus pandemic in an effort to aid public social distancing.

"This small step makes it a little easier for the American public to enjoy the outdoors in our incredible National Parks," Bernhardt said in a news release Wednesday.
"Our vast public lands that are overseen by the Department offer special outdoor experiences to recreate, embrace nature and implement some social distancing."
The step comes as more than 7,500 people have been infected by the virus in the US, and at least 125 have died. In response, states are ordering new shutdowns and restrictions every day and public health officials are encouraging the public to stay home and practice social distancing to contain the spread of the virus.
Still, while the National Park Service has temporarily closed some parks, the vast majority remain fully or partially open -- though "many facilities will be closed."
In an open letter released earlier this month, an organization representing National Park Service retirees called on the agency to introduce broader closures to protect the staff and the public.
Chair Phil Francis of The Coalition to Protect America's Parks argues that "to suggest to the public that gathering at national park sites is acceptable ... is irresponsible to the visiting public and employees."
"National parks welcome visitors from around the world," Francis writes. "Many National Park Service employees interact with members of the public daily."
CNN's Jen Rose Smith contributed to this report.

VC's are closed.
No shuttle.
Bathrooms should be open and hopefully will still be serviced.
Maybe F4 could go represent?

Campground is open but they are monitoring so that could change.

Likely to be wet the next week or so.
Low temps won't allow much evaporation and more rain in the forecast.

Bear Gulch Caves
Balconies Caves

I figure they closed all of these since there are metal handrails.

Climbers, Please Control Yourselves
This might feel like the perfect time to go climbing outdoors. It’s not.

Last weekend, Monica Cowan and a few friends drove east to Joshua Tree National Park, where they spent the day climbing. Natural Sisters Cafe, a popular café just north of the park entrance, was hopping, and there was a long line to drive into the park. “It was just as crowded as I’d expect on a beautiful weekend day,” she said. “The normalcy felt abnormal.” Nonetheless, Cowan says her crew was glad to be getting out, especially after a wet week in L.A. “[We were] happy to be climbing outside after the rain, and happy to have a day of not thinking about coronavirus,” she says. But after they returned, Cowan started reading posts from folks in small towns talking about the load on resources weekend warriors create. “I’ve since texted with the friends I went with, and we all agree that if we were planning on going this weekend, we’d cancel the trip.”

Many people, like Cowan, look to the outdoors as an escape from daily stressors, a way to unplug and forget about your problems for a few hours or days. Now, more than ever, people are stressed—and with schools and businesses closed, many folks have more free time than usual.
Climbers, in particular, find themselves in a bind—in some cities, local climbing gyms have been ordered to close. It seems there could be no better time to get outdoors and unwind. Plus, there’s ample room outside for social distancing, right? It’s easy to stay 6 feet away from someone in the great outdoors.

Yes, but it gets complicated when everyone has the same idea. Over the weekend, visitors swarmed Moab, Utah, prompting local health officials to shut down campgrounds and hotels to visitors. Climbers have been out in full force in Bishop, California, and popular climbing spots in Washington, like Leavenworth and Index, have been crowded as well. Molly Ravits, a science teacher who lives in Leavenworth, says that on Tuesday, she couldn’t believe how many people she saw parked near Icicle Creek Canyon, a popular climbing area. “I know they aren’t locals, because there aren’t that many climbers who live in town.” Ravits is also on the board of the Leavenworth Mountain Association, and she posted a reminder on the organization’s social media pages asking visitors to stay home. Other local climbing organizations, like Bishop’s Climbing Coalition, have done the same.

“Realistically, no one should be climbing,” says Jeremy Park, a member of the Washington Climbers Coalition’s board, who helped draft the WCC’s statement after talking with Ravits. Park didn’t come to that decision lightly—when we spoke, he’d actually just returned from a climbing trip to Index. He says it was packed both days he was there, as if it were a weekend. “Tuesday night, I started reading some articles and comments on local climbing groups about the small communities we impact, and the effect all this traffic has on them, and my opinion evolved,” he says. He ended his trip early and worked with two other local climbers to write Instagram and Facebook posts encouraging climbers to stay home.

Park wants to climb, of course, but “this is just not the time to do it,” he says. There’s inherent risk to any activity, especially climbing, and any climbing-related injuries could deplete precious hospital resources. Accidents can happen even on easy climbs, and “if you get injured, you’re going to take up a bed that could potentially be taken by someone else,” Park says. With hospitals anticipating massive demand, even building a 200-bed emergency hospital tent on a soccer fields north of Seattle, it seems prudent to avoid any activity that could put you in the hospital.

Folks enjoying the outdoors may think of their activities as solitary pursuits out in the wild, but in reality, most stop elsewhere along the way: the gas station to fuel up or use the restroom, a tasty burger spot after a solid day out, or the local grocery to pick up some snacks. Hundreds or thousands of tourists coming into town to make purchases could also be unwittingly spreading COVID-19 to the people living and working in these communities. “I worry about people coming here from King County, which is the epicenter of the pandemic in the U.S.,” says Ravits. She says she believes the virus is likely already in town but that more climbers coming in from Seattle will only make it worse. “There are a few elderly homes in town—there are definitely people who are vulnerable that live here.”

Medical supplies and devices are especially limited in rural hospitals that service the mountain towns where folks love to climb and hike, and hospitals are not equipped to handle an outbreak. The local hospital has just two ventilators available, and one of them lives in an ambulance.

No one’s going to be standing at the crag telling you to go home. (In fact, some areas might have less staffing than before. Several national parks, like Yosemite and Zion, have closed their visitors’ centers or shuttles, and reduced staffing.) So enforcing these norms will fall to outdoors communities. National climbing organizations like the Access Fund and the American Alpine Club have not advised full climbing abstinence but encourage climbers to stay close to home, keep distance from other climbers, and avoid taking unnecessary risks. For many city climbers, that functionally means staying at home and finding new activities to take on. Ravits says she plans to get strong on her hangboard; Park says he’s running more. Other climbers are getting creative with finding urban climbs, or even climbs in their own houses.

Climbers aren’t the only ones finding their activity affected; long-distance hikers are canceling their Appalachian Trail or Pacific Crest Trail trips, and ski season has abruptly ended. While it will be hard for many to adjust to life without their favorite activities, there’s always next year.

Future Tense is a partnership of Slate, New America, and Arizona State University that examines emerging technologies, public policy, and society.

As an RN who works in a hospital I’d like to put out a request, even implore people to stay home, getting outside only for necessities and an occasional walk. I know it sucks not to be out climbing, hiking, etc.  Also as climbers I feel a lot of us bristle when authority tries to tell us how to live our lives.  The thing is that unless we slow this thing down, or stretch out the curve our hospitals are in danger of imploding. My hospital is already dangerously low of protective gear, wipes, hand gel, etc. and as of now we can’t get anymore. Already we get one mask usually meant for one time use, for an entire shift. Some hospitals nurses are using garbage bags instead of protective gowns and they have run out of masks.  I hate being alarmist and shrill, but if this thing really trends toward worst case then our health care system will for the moment collapse at a time it’s most needed. The next person to get sick could be you or someone you care deeply about. Sacrifice now or pay a worse price later.  Not that long ago I was being taught the art of placing and drilling on lead by Brad surrounded by the specialness of Pinnacles, I look forward to those days again, hopefully not too too long out.  Nuff said, rant over...stay safe, on belay everyone.

You guys are seriously awesome.  Thank you for your work.

Please consider not doing it.
Unless they lift the Shelter in Place order early (high lee and unlike lee), we won't be attending and we think that is the responsible thing to do.

Here's an excerpt from an article an old friend of mine posted today.
I can send you the whole thing if you like.
I think you would enjoy his writing and his biting sense of humor.

Recreational travel does not qualify as essential travel. When you are away from home, you increase your odds of interaction outside of your germ group. Even if you can maintain sufficient distance from everyone else on the trails in the woods, you should still stay home. If you trip and break your leg right now, you'd better tell the staff at the hospital you go to that you got run over by a grocery truck or they're likely to send you home with a moist towelette and a couple of aspirin.

I'm going to be cancelling the reservations I made.
Recreation.gov currently has a special policy that will allow us all to get a full refund.

Don't cross county lines. I like this Aromas corner of San Benito County. Since the Pinnacles store quit selling alcohol, there isn't much justification of going shopping there and chancing getting run over by a grocery delivery truck.

4 counties meet near or at Aromas. Finally took a look at it on a map :) Brad and JC would have done this a long time ago.

Quote
Aromas is a census-designated place (CDP) in Monterey County, and San Benito County, California, United States. The population was 2,650 at the 2010 census.

The CDP straddles the border of the two counties, with Monterey County to the west and San Benito County to the east. The Santa Cruz County line is less than a mile to the northwest, and Santa Clara County is about two miles (3 km) to the north. Its population was almost equally distributed between the two counties with 1,358 in Monterey County and 1,292 in San Benito County; this was down from a population of 2,797 during the 2000 census (1,427 in Monterey County and 1,370 in San Benito County). Aromas is one of four CDPs in California that are divided between two or more counties. The others are Kingvale (divided between Placer County and Nevada County), Kirkwood (divided between Alpine County and Amador County), and Tahoma (divided between Placer County and El Dorado County)

I did not but that is kind of cool. It doesn't look quite well defined enough to be truly 4 corners.
Has someone erected a monument? Another big chicken perhaps?

It started raining there again this morning

My rule of thumb for now is if you can't walk or bicycle there - you shouldn't go.

The Granite Quarry was operated by hand labor early on and the workers probably smelled pretty ripe at times.

Quote

A small granite quarry on Judge Logan's ranch east of Watsonville, had been supplying rock for construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) for several years before it was acquired by Porter's bank in 1899.[2] SP named the quarry spur at railroad milepost 93.2 Logan, after the ranch owner. The quarry on the San Andreas Fault minimized drilling and blasting costs by mining rock broken by fault movement. Smaller particles of construction aggregate were obtained close to the fault, and coarser material was more distant from the fault trace. Porter and Wilson saw its possibilities, found some additional investors, and started up the business with Wilson as Superintendent. In the beginning, quarry operations were tough; fifteen men used sledgehammers, picks, shovels and wheelbarrows to break and load broken rock onto horse-drawn wagons for the trip to the railroad line. Relief came in 1903 when the quarry was automated with Corliss steam engine-powered McCully crusher No.3. It produced 20 tons of 2½-inch rock per hour. Crushing capacity was increased by 35 tons per hour in 1904 by crusher No.5 powered by an oil-fired Atlas tandem compound steam engine.[3] Rock was transported from the quarry face to the crushing plant in horse-drawn, side-dump rail cars, which were loaded manually. There were about 24 men working at the quarry.[4]

The 1906 San Francisco earthquake flattened the new steam crushing plant and temporarily halted operations. Rail operations were disrupted, and the quarry operation was devastated. The earthquake's destruction created a demand for construction. In the following years, Granite Rock Company supplied materials for a number of buildings in San Francisco and around the Monterey Bay area. Among those still standing are the old Gilroy City Hall and the old San Francisco Wells Fargo Building. At the quarry in Aromas, California, expansion was taking place.

Regarding the Cook’s post above about not going into the park even if u have a “golden ticket” into the campground.  I totally agree. I had 3 nights reserved last week for what was supposed to be my kids spring break, however I cancelled them. The selfish part of me would love to have a quiet pinns all to myself, but it’s the wrong thing to do at this moment.
Yes, unless you can walk or bike there don’t go. I feel like other than driving for essentials or to bring meals/meds/supplies to the sick or vulnerable stuck inside their homes, as far as recreating, you should not be driving somewhere else to do it. No matter how good you social distance. This sucks for us urban people but this won’t be forever.
As I’ve stated before I’m a hospital RN.  We don’t want to be “heroes.”  We are there for you when you need us of course, but we’d rather everyone do their best to not need us. So please continue to make good judgements for yourself and others.  All of us on the frontline appreciate everyone’s sacrifices to slow this bastard down.
Hope everyone is doing as well as they can...peace.

I can imagine Gavin running around doing laps at Discovery wall all by himself.

All the while saying.....”the Monument is mine!”

I’d give him $20 to add in a few bolts.

Maybe he will surface when the beer runs out.

I would volunteer to help resupply!!
