Title: 30yrs ago....
Post by: F4? on June 09, 2020, 04:47:04 PM
I had just gotten my Drivers license, but no car.
I had just bought a pair of boreal gold (?) from REI.
I spent the last weeks or days at high school thumbing the meadows guide book looking at routes...

My brother’s high school teacher was an old Yosemite instructor and we had talked with him about climbing.
“You boys need to go to the meadows and learn there. Don’t mess up cuz I don’t want to hear about your asses in the news!”

So after high school graduation, me and my brother loaded up moms car and headed to the meadows.

The lesson was casual and the instructor gave us beta on where to bandit camp, we had no reservations.

After our lesson we decided on great while book...rout went to the top. We climbed it with nuts, hexes and 1 #2 Camelot. And you had to have a damn good reason to place it!

I’ll never forget pitch 3_4?? My brother was out of rope and not to the belay. I was gripped, freaked out.....climbing up to my brother....who was belaying off of the sacred Camelot. I lead past him, not sure if I placed anything, most likely not. I get to the bolted belay on the face. Whatever feat I had, totally gone. We finished the climb and stumbled down.

We were hooked after that trip.

Later in the fall my brother told his teacher we had climbed great white book.....his response, I used to solo it all the time.

Sigh!!!

I just thought it was cool to reflect on a pivotal moment in life....turning East on 120....

Now how about this one...4years later we pull into the DAFF parking lot to see tree trimmer Charlie and some scraggly looking blonde guy. What are you guys climbing??? “Hemispheres”

Years later Mr Mud would recount his scent of Hemispheres...with Charlie!

Had I known I would have taken a picture of the bearded wonder beardless back then.

Good stories.  First time climbing in Yosemite are always good stories.  Sometimes when I go there it's fun to think about how many people are simultaneously having the best/worst memories of their life.

Thirty years ago I was climbing late afternoons and early mornings with Holmgren. I had coffee with him today, as he happened to be in the neighborhood.

Ha Waldo, ha!

How does one get in the neighborhood of Kings City....has to be by choice.

BTW, ii think an evening shot of Chalone Peak a bit from kings city would be nice.

I always like to see it welcoming me back from the south.

Sign, all of my life I have gone to Santa Inez and later Santa Barbara.

To go past past Robles in my book is to have gone south. Worse is past Santa Barbara.

Ever since I started climbing at the pinnacles i would see Challenging peak outside of kings city heading north in 101.
Hope that’s the right one.

What be the South?.

Apologies for the thread jack. 30 years ago I was living the biggest nightmare of my life.

The South?

First and most important step - leave California and have some spare license plates (one from each state you'll be visiting is best).

Mount your rifle rack in the back window of your pickup truck and slip on your shit kickers in Texas.
Trailer hitch testicles and rebel flag window decal or tailgate covering are optional.
Grab some dip or chaw when you gas up and don't forget the Mountain Dew. Bonus - You can use the can for spittle.
Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas all have their own mix of southern and western flavor.
Now dive deep into Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. For lunch - start with something basic like fried catfish (or frog legs) and hush puppies at a local greasy spoon and make sure you sit outside to eat during the hottest part of the day so you can fully experience swamp ass. Grab some pork rinds and jerky for the road.
Consider cruising the rest of the south as a loop - Georgia, South and North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.
Avoid large cities at all costs. The small towns and the mountain folk have retained the most authentic flavor. It's amazing how many small cultural and culinary (don't use big words like this if you want to maintain a low profile) differences there are between states.
Enjoy the southern hospitality and the grub.
Listen a lot - keep speaking to a minimum.
Don't mention where you are from (don't forget to change your license plates) and don't talk about politics if you value your life.
Educating yourself about the local teams and players (football or basketball) might also get you out of a sticky wicket.

My first trip out I whined on a fist crack in Indian Cove. My buddy’s dad didn’t let me back off. I will forever appreciate that thrashing.

You're right. The other reason is that you break down here. Jack was cruising by trying to plan an ultra-long bike route. He checked out the road from Lockwood to San Lucas as one leg of something that will begin in Santa Cruz and end there, too. My crotch shrivels at the thought! Anyway, he called to see if I was at home. I was.
