Ok, not really big news but this one was a bit different. first even though I am kind of sore this morning I think I loosened up my neck a bit. The one interesting part of the crash is I not just lose my glasses and my water bottle, I lost my shoe. After sitting and collecting my thoughts after the crash I went to get up and realized my shoe was gone. I managed to find everything so no big loss but I am not sure if I have had a shoe come off before.
-
Gee, yet again?
Suggestion: take up free-soloing so that you're less likely to get hurt?
-
^^^
Goddammit, I mean really. Will you still be able to hump my pack up 2,000 feet of elevation gain on the first day of this upcoming PCT trip? Get your priorities straight!!
-
Free soloing and humping packs. Sounds like good times.
I must share, I do have a rather nice bright purple bruise in my crotch. Beautiful and ugly at the same time. I would share but I would get a perma ban. Helmet has a couple of new scratches and dents.
-
Sounds like a 3 star crash*** to me.
Glad you are still okay with nothing broken.
-
How far away and where was the shoe? In a tree? Must've slammed pretty hard to make shoes come off. Sounds like you are somewhat ok.
A month or so ago I ejected over the bars, landed on my feet, but downhill offtrail. Unwillingly ran through a buttload of poison oak and then slammed into tree. I think I need a dropper post so I can escape off the back.
-

Maybe it would be easier for you three to buy and then share a Guardian Angel?

Wow! Cat-like reflexes.
Geez - that ejector seat must make your bike heavy.
Flipping the switch on a drop post seems like it would be hit or miss when anticipating a crash.
Maybe someone needs to invent one with a dead man switch.
Running through PO and then slamming into a tree - talk about adding insult to injury - ouch!
Glad you are okay too.
-

Would drop the post for all dirt single track downhill. When the seat post is up your body is pushed high up on the front of the bike. On a tight downhill curve if you cant get your center of gravity over the back of the bike and low and you have to bail jumping over the handlebars happens
Maybe it would be easier for you three to buy and then share a Guardian Angel?
Pretty sure Mr. Mud already has a dropper post. Pretty standard for MTBs now.
-
^^^
Duh.
I didn't realize that is how it works/designed to be used.
I thought it was like a panic switch you hit when you're about to crash and need to bail.
That makes complete sense if you are dropping into something aggressive.
I always liked BMX and dirt bikes but never got really hooked on mtn biking.
I got a raised gooseneck and handlebars with some bend to them because I hate those straight bars they put on mtn bikes.
If I wanted to spend thousands of dollars on a bike I'd just buy another dirt bike and likely kill myself on it trying to ride like I used to :ihih: :devildevil:

You should get one for your unicycle.
-
Old saying goes, if you are not crashing you are not riding hard enough.
This excludes Uni cycles since they only have 1 wheel.
I think yer getting old and those cat like reflexes are slowing.
Just remember.....rag doll, loose, roll with it...
My road rash from memorial weekend finally healed up. Now I am ready to ride the road bike over Montebello again.
This time with gloves and knee pads for the dirt decent.
Seat dropper is critical on descents, makes them way safer, unless you hit the switch on mistake.
I want one on my road bike, we’re it not so damn heavy already.
-
My road rash from memorial weekend finally healed up.
Dang you must've had a pretty good crash. What happened and did your shoes come off?
ready to ride the road bike over Montebello again.
Maybe I will see you. Been using the canyon trail as an alternative to riding on skyline lately.
-
Yeah noal I basically tore a hole in my palm. I should have gotten stitches...nah.
But I still kept my shoes on...and preserved my dignity.
If I am mtn biking you will know it’s me as I tend to go a wee fast down the canyon trail.
That is unless there are jackasses in the middle of the trail playing grab ass or whatever.
I get these indignant and blank stares.
GET THE F out of my way!!!

I won't tell you what you should get... :out: :prrr: :ciappa:

I think I will take the purple crotch over the P.O.
Yeah, a few bruises and scratches but I am fine. Shoe was not far away. Clipped a tree then went OTB off of a small drop. A bit jarring but not bad. My neck is a it sore. Was going down a fairly steep gravely downhill section.

All my bikes except the road bike have a dropper. Makes a difference. SRAM makes a wireless dropper that I had the opportunity to try that is really awesome but has a premium price tag as well.
-
Saw that AXS dropper too. Pretty cool but think I would rather put that dough towards another set of wheels. Which dropper post do you like the best?
Beautiful and ugly at the same time.
ugly is the new beautiful.
-
Which one do I like the best? The AXS, lol. I had tried a wireless dropper a long time ago and did not like it since there was a lag but the AXS is awesome. But, I hear what you are saying. I have a specialized and it is good as long as you absolutely never over pressurize it. Keep the air pressure at 15 lbs and rebuild every two years. I have a Thompson that works but they went through several iterations before really getting it right. Bike Yokes are good but expensive. Most of the others all use the same internals. The PNW are good value. I recommend always buying droppers from reputable sources because they have a history of failing with the possible exception of some of the newer high end ones. I would not hesitate to get a used Specialized if I saw it work. Keep the air pressure low. Almost all of them require a rebuild after two years. The lower end ones you can replace the air cartridge. Sometimes that cost can be the same as getting a dropper on sale. Being able to work on your own stuff save a ton. OneUp also seems to have a good reputation I have not used one but they get good reviews, I would probably take a good look at these.
I would look at these
OneUp
Fox
PNW
KS Lev Si
Bike Yoke - if you can get a deal.

Do not know what you are looking at in regards to wheels but the Cheep Chinese Carbon options are worth looking at.

Look at you two...geeking out on gear. Isn't that cute.
Do you have all your spare parts on a pegboard in the living room NOAL? :devildevil:

On Monday or Tuesday I saw a Uni rider. I didn’t heckle him or make a cheap comment.
I just watched him wiggle on by.
I must be getting old...
-
Do you have all your spare parts on a pegboard in the living room NOAL?
No. When I am done riding or working on my bicycle I put it away in the laundry room.
Look at you two...geeking out on gear.
Way more bicycle components and manufacturers out there vs. Climbing gear. If there 50 different companies making cams or say drill holders I would have questions .
Talking about climbing gear is like talking about screw drivers. When I am done with the screwdriver at work I put it away until I need to work on something. Same with climbing gear. When I come home from climbing it stays in the pack in the closet or by the front door until I go out again. It's just a bag of tools.
I am generally more interested in the actual activity being done vs gear. When I was looking into getting a bicycle Mr. Mud suggested I get an endurance gravel bike to be able to ride MTB trails, road, and bike pack. The last few months riding the Cutty have proved to be interesting in many ways.
I have found that a good portion of road bikers and MTB ers are snobby. Was taking a break with all the road bikers at the top of Kings Mountain while they were all talking about their bicycles. One woman took a look at my bike and commented "I don't even know what THAT is!" With a look like "who farted?"
Was at waterdog in Belmont riding one evening and a MTBer commented after seeing drop bars and no suspension on my bike " you know you really shouldn't be riding here without suspension"
These are people who care waaay too much about their stuff and maybe feel somewhat threatened by something that does not fit into their world. Occasionally, when I am out I will see old dudes/ladies on gnarly hill climbs riding heavy bikes from 80s. Just enjoying the activity. I like that and identify with them the most.

I hear you Noal - my road bike is more of a commuter bike - straight handle bars and just more comfy for me to ride. I go out riding and most of the road bikers (decked out in all the latest biking fashions) won't even acknowledge me when I tip my head to say hi (especially since I'm in biking skorts and the same little tops I climb in). I can't wait to see what happens when my Giant mt bike (from 1996) finally gets new shifters and I start riding it on the trails around here. ;D.
I'm all about having fun and getting some exercise.
-
Climbing and cycling are kind of two different worlds when it comes to gear but are very similar when it come to being driven by ego and notoriety.
Being new to cycling I have tried to be open minded to some behavior and to appreciate it. For instance, having a clean shiny high performance bike is cool especially if you can back it up by riding fast and hard and being badass. When you see somebody killing it on a hill climb on a badass bike you kind of have to recognize. As Ali G says "Respect".
In climbing you really cant show off that you have a shiny new rack. Nobody cares. The only way they care is if you have a shiny new rack and you are climbing a 5.11 route in The Valley slow. Saw an altercation like this on the curry village deck. Two parties had climbed the same 5.11. The hardmen pretty much got stuck behind noobs with shiny new rack. Noobs confronted hardmen at the pizza deck for being rude. Hardmen said stay off hard routes take your shiny noob gear back to moderates. Have to say it was pretty funny.

One more reason that I just don't miss The Valley....

Yep.
I know what that feels like.
Tons of snobs around here - and not just on bicycles.
Thank goodness there are plenty of nice people too.
I'll be keeping my 20+ year old mtn bike with no rear suspension.

Thank goodness there are plenty of nice people too.
The majority of people I meet are nice. People check on you and ask if you are ok and if you need help when you have a flat. Made some new friends on China Grade who gave me some bottles of water and gels. Some people pass and say encouraging or nice things.
I have to say that I find the people who say or do rude things to be very entertaining. I never take stuff like that personally. It's just ridiculous in the grand scheme of things. You have to laugh.
I think the one outdoor activity I was shocked about people being jerky was backpacking. Some people with big ass heavy backpacks dont like to see someone on a mountain pass with ultralight gear cruise by them. You get "oh you're one of those guys" or " why dont you slow down and enjoy the scenery?" Crazy.
-
I'll be keeping my 20+ year old mtn bike with no rear suspension.
Don't tell anyone that I let you in on this, but that's referred to by the non-noobs as a "Hardtail" bike. And that is exactly what will happen to your derriere if you ride often enough. Ride hard!
Now, what we need is a t-shirt, with a perfect quote from Noal to circle a "Ride Hard" slogan.
I purchased a Specialized entry level bike this week and have thoroughly enjoyed reading this discussion. :)

No duh. You must think I live in a cave with a bunch of Meanderthals.
I have springs in my seat.
I got it off an old tractor.
Can't get behind it without great effort.
Doesn't matter much since mostly what I do is ride endless wheelies.

Nope. I opted for the padded shorts with the disposable liner and built in gyroscope. Other than an occasional little tickle, they work well.
-
Invalid without pics - let's see these machines (I showed you mine).
I'm guessing NOAL has a Cutthroat bike.
There are so many different kinds of bikes these days.
The people I know who are really into cycling have 4 or 5 different kinds and thousands of dollars invested.
The elite class around here ride fancy electric bikes and drive Teslas.
They pretend to pedal while making obviously too much progress - why even bother faking it?
Just twist the throttle (although it's probably more like a snowmobile throttle).
Some guy was coming up one of the splays from the beach path to the road today as I was pedaling out.
He gave me the "who farted " look and then zoomed past - pretending to pedal.
-

Around here it's owning a gas weed-wacker and a vehicle that's one color.
-

They have to pedal those electric bikes because the motor only operatives as an assist.
-

So you're one of them.

I'm calling BS on that.
There are different types of e bikes.
These people are clearly not making any significant forward progress by pedaling.
And where did you learnded to speak Ingles?

My dad's gmc fits in nicely, forrest green with pink decorative accent.

Even for e-bikes that have a throttle, you'll need to pedal when going up long, steep hills, although you won't have to pedal hard. Pedaling is more fun, extends the range of your battery, extends the life of your motor, and extends your own life too.
Google before you speak, Cro-Magnon.
-
Good man Klink!
I hope you got some tight tight shorts to boot as well. Plus go sleeveless on the jersey.
Socks you gotta get the high top ones....white is good.
Let me know if you want to ride Demo....
The e-bikes are scary from the perspective of more speed and the potential of a more intense crash due to the faster speeds.
This is more from a road riding perspective where they would pass me on the dumbarton bridge. Trail....they look heavy.
It’s annoying when they pass you on the fire road out of Demo.
-
Wow this thread has over taken the Poop thread.
-
I'm guessing NOAL has a Cutthroat bike.
Good guessing there. Makes the "who farted" look even funnier right?

There are still throttle only bikes out there. I see the local snobs zipping down the beach on their fat tires and no pedaling.
The depth of your bike knowledge would fit in a thimble - must be all that reading you do.
No wonder your forehead is so small.

Dear Early Man,
You may be right about a small amount of the locals having throttle only bikes. Probably the same ones shooting off illegal fireworks and making the Aptos beaches great and littered again.
I went on my first ride this morning. I happily sucked!

Dear Meandering Fool,
What did you suck? I mean for goodness sake - it's a freakin' bicycle.
Certainly even a knuckle dragger like you can ride a BICYCLE - that takes almost zero natural ability. Maybe you need to evolve!
I'd say at most you are overdramatizing (popular these days) and were likely only sucking wind.
And it's Rio Del Mar on this side of the highway (said with nose in the air). :out: :prrr: :ciappa:

I will admit to being a bit of a bike snob. I tend to ride high end gear, or at least upgrade to what I selectively consider high end gear. But, when it comes to bicycles I am a complete whore. I really will ride anything once, and love to swap bikes with people my size for a short section of trail. Obviously you have to know the person well enough to know they will not take off with it. The thing about the Bay Area is there are so many incredible riders and most of the rich, snobby elite folks are not electrified. Those are the middle tier riders. The fast guys and gals ride all kinds of stuff. When I was in fairly decent shape I regularly got passed by this guy on a rigid single speed and it was not carbon. The guy rocked. There are a few high end riders on electrics just because. But most of the fast folks I know just ride, because they can.
I know this one guy at work who was talking about passing guys on electric bikes. He is just this old, really low key guy that crushes it on 2rd gen out of the box mid tier bikes. There was this guy Roy in the Bay Area, who recently passed away, that would regularly keep up with just about anyone short of a pro on an old 1980's Trek, half the time it had panniers on it. There is this story of him riding one of his first Rando's where he rides up to this guy who is a local legend, and has the course record for this ride, and Roy rides with him to the finish, while talking. At first people thought it was some kind of stunt. But it was just Roy. One of the most low key guys you could meet.
I do agree though that road bikers tend to be a snobby bunch and quite often aggro. Mountain biking seems to be heading in the same direction. The gravel crowd can be but is still eclectic enough to be fairly chill if not completely stoned out of their minds. Drop bar guys are looked on kind of like a bunch of weirdos since they do not really fit in either world.
Have fun out there and,
Here's to sweat in your eye

I went climbing today. Third day in a row. Fabulous granite.
-
I cleared bush and moved dirt all weekend, put down wood chips, swept, wept, then went for a ride and cleaned a bit. Got dizzy during part of the ride, I think I should have ate and drank more. Did not crash. The funny part of losing my shoe in that last crash is I was riding flats. How do you lose a shoe when riding flats?
-
Did not crash.
Sounds like a great day right there.
-
He crashed!!! Even *I* consider myself too old to have another crash in my life! :frown2: :nono: :justmad:
Now, do we not have a REAL cyclist here? I can't believe nobody asked.

I should have asked. I wrecked on my road bike several years ago during a Mermaid Mini-Tri, and I immediately got back up, hopped on the bike and started making sure everything on the bike was working. Wasn't even worried about my injuries. :-)
-
Theres all kinds of weirdos out there riding bicycles.
Was going up Kings Mt yesterday. Got to the entrance to Huddart and this guy riding a fold up commuter bike thing pulled out in front of me. We went around the next turn and I passed him. He stayed behind me all the way to the mailboxes. We even passed a couple of road bikers.
Another day was also on Kings Mt and saw a teenage girl on a single speed girls huffy type bike flying downhill above Huddart. You could hear her coming before you saw her because the bike was rattling so much and she was laughing.
-

When you get to the top pf King's Mtn do you stand on the summit and dare folks to knock you off?

I usually eat a stroopwaffle.

Noal, remember no skateboarding down Kings Mountain road!!
I used to always chuckle eyeing that sign. I think they meant no luge boards.....

It could see this on Kings Mt.

yum yum

One of our network guys at Acuson was world luge champion a couple of different years. He also longboarded. He had some interesting stories about the local roads
-
Well it was crazy to see in 1990_95 the no skateboarding sign on kings mountain right after the Huddart Park turn off.
Had to be guys on street luges. Crazy as it’s a windy ass road.
-
from what I heard it was more than street luge. I was surprised to hear they went down some roads that I thought would be to rough. Last big one that I heard he one was in Brazil. He really liked that course because of all the turns. Guess it was a fairly technical descent. Was kind of fast on a bike as well, go figure.
-
Noal....Looked for you on montebello today. And page mill.
Rode over montebello to page mill on rode bike....no crashes.
-
Didnt make it down that way today. Had to do fun things this weekend like smog the car and various other equally thrilling chores.
Weather must've been super nice down there. Took a ride Friday. OLH Tunitas loop. Strange weather. sunny and warm in San Gregorio and a wall of fog around star hill. I like riding on Friday afternoons. Less people out.
No crashes=good.

Noal was that you today on the dirt part of monteB?
Red road bike?
-
No, had to work today. Tomorrow I ride!

On a "I crashed" thread that could mean asphalt rash.
Just got back in from my uni ride.
So few people walking around the neighborhood compared to a month ago.
One car parked at the beach path when I left and about 20 when I came back through.
Are you tracking your progress on Strava so everyone can stalk you?
Then again...can a Meanderthal make progress?

A little.
-
Rest day for me....tortured myself on the Stevens canyon boulder..

All us cyclists are on Strava talking about those Pinnacles people on Facebook.
Can you use for the unicycle? I see a tab with a foot for running, a tab with a bicycle, but no one wheel option.

There is only one option for the uni.
All you need is one.
One is all you need.

At this point all Strava wants is you to sign up and pay the, some $$.
So it think they would add a Uni section.

Doesn't everybody get a participation trophy?
Guess they just want to show everybody who rode up the latest hill of beans

You get your own achievements so you can compete against your best time.
The local legend is a new feature that tracks and gives recognition to the person who has ridden a segment of trail or road the most times in 90 days.
Before there was just the KOM or king of mountain for the fastest time and then "trophies" for top ten.
Kind of cool to see how fast somebody can ride something. Like seeing speed records for climbs you have climbed and then imagining Hans Florine or Dan Osman running up it in 1/10 of the time.
-

I got an email yesterday that I am currently the local legend on a segment of road in our neighborhood. I didn't even know there was such a thing. ;D
-
Yup, everybody is a winner!, now subscribe!
I have 2x local legends.
It’s tough as I have to ride the same segments each day.....even taking a detour to complete the segment.
I might have to pay a buddy to carry my bike computer next week when I am gone.
Noal, I want to get that for riding monteB to see how strong I would get riding 3k a day.
-
JC navigates the roads like a local escaped longhorn
-
You get your own achievements so you can compete against your best time.
Kind of cool to see how fast somebody can ride something.
On the uni the goal is to see how slow you can go and how long you can stay seated without falling.
I'm sure you already know this but the slower you go, the harder it is to keep your balance.
After about 50 minutes, what I affectionately refer to as "crotch weariness" starts to set in and it's time to head for the barn.
On the stretch home whatever you do you must not raise up out of the seat.
If you do, the pain only intensifies until you dismount.
-
Clink, I think JC is hitting the sauce prior to riding....is it riding or balancing
-
It’s tough as I have to ride the same segments each day.....even taking a detour to complete the segment.
I ride essentially the same circuit every day but I can mix it up with a bunch of interconnected streets.
I never get bored.
I even get an ocean view for part of it   :ihih:

You don't need strava to be a local legend. I bet you if I asked anybody in a mile radius of your house about the guy on the unicycle they would immediately know who I'm talking about.
-
In soft whispers :)

JEEZUS O’Mally, Noal how do you think of this shit.
In Santa Cruz folks are able to follow their hearts.....and not be judged...to harshly he is accepted, there is a nut for every squirrel.

Supposedly there is a guy who does laps up and down Rio Del Mar hill (steeper and longer than anything I've ever done).
I saw him once when I used to run - about 10 years ago.
There is another older dude with a ponytail that rides Beach Rd and along the beach path down to Seacliff.
That is actually a fun ride but I haven't been down there in years either - too crowded.
I saw a younger girl down there on the beach path once too. All of them ride 36 inch wheels.
Every once in a while someone in the neighborhood will drive or walk by and tell me they have been watching me for years.

Yup, hard to be unique in Santa Cruz....
