For Al Steck
Following
Another's footprints up
Steep snow --
Through shifting diamonds
Of morning light,
As wind feathers
Chill my face --
Left
Above an ice crust,
Right
Below the bergshrund,
I cede decisions
To an unknown mind
And know it —
Until up a gleaming cirque
Untrodden snow
Beckons.

I'd take 96 years! What a good life.

He was pretty active well into his 90's.
Saw him and Roper do a live narration of a film they made
Doing the third ascent of Salathe wall with Dick Long. I think they said it was the first color film footage shot of el cap. It was like watching a comic duo. They were hilarious.
The best part was they said they every once in awhile the three of them would get together at Roper's house to watch the film while they hung out getting drunk in the hot tub. They would set the film projector up right next to the tub so they could operate it without getting out. They would joke around about how funny it would be if the projector accidentally fell in and electrocuted all three of them destroying the film footage and any account of the climb.
I was always amazed when I would climb at Iron works and see Steck still climbing well into his 80s. Will miss seeing him around.
