November 3-5 I have a group camp site reserved for the annual climbing and hanging out thing that we do. Super crazy that some of the group sites are already reserved.
Current RSVP list:
Noal
Brad & Vicki
Burnsbabe + 1
BAP
Atomizer, Kelly
Beanolar+?
Marco, Mikayla,
Laura
Shane et al
If anyone has a change of plans between now and the Thursday before camping post here so I can remove you. Also, if you want to bring 3 or 4 people or want to sleep in your vehicle please follow JC's lead and reserve an additional campsite. There's plenty on the site right now. Then we can all hang in the group site. I love seeing and including new people but I also want to see all of the familiar faces which is about couple of dozen or so folks. Realistically not all of these folks will be able to attend (although it would pretty awesome if they did). New attendees don't fret. Just as in the past there will most likely be room for everyone. With that said I am not seeking to having a PCAD type of event with 100 people. Here's a little list of those folks in no particular order (except Mr. Mud he's #1 on the list):
Mr. Mud
mudworm
The Dawsons
Joel Primrose
Dave Harden
Jim
Waldo
Aaron and Dina
Caleb
F4
Jack and Freya
-
Vicki and I are IN.
Probable appearances by Miss Halifax and Miss Digby.
-
Noal: for clarity, campsite is for Friday and Saturday nights, November 3 and 4? And how many allowed in the site? Which site number?
-
Site122. Friday and Saturday nights. First 20 callers get tickets to the show.

EDIT:
We're in but got our own site (to give more space for others). We can share our site with one car and up to 4 more people if needed.
Group sites are reservable up to a year and others are 6 months - and they fill up fast (gets worse every year). I used to reserve PCAD group sites almost a year in advance. As soon as the event was over I'd reserve the next year.
Thanks for pulling the lever on a date.

Sounds ominous. We are in ........................................the middle of the Pacific that weekend, our last.
-

I was thinking you guys might want to stay in your RV. I forgot to mention above there is only parking for two vehicles and those two spots are spoken for. There is overflow parking nearby.
-
I would be interested in joining, as well as some of the other Santa Cruz/Watsonville crew... Brad/Noal, can I get on the list?
-
Sure. But try to narrow down how many will come (for obvious reasons) as soon as you can?
-
Sounds great Brad. My guess is that it will be about 3-4 people (total), but am going to call/text all of those folks today to let them know. Will confirm in the next 1-2 days.
-
Sounds fun. I'm in. Anybody have an issue if my partner comes? She doesn't climb, but would enjoy the people and the hiking around.

No, no-one would have problem with you bringing your partner. My partner Vicki doesn't climb and she'll be there.
I'm proud to say that everyone or at least almost everyone who will be there knows Vicki. Hell, she's probably fed more than one meal to each and every one of them (at our house, for climbing up on SPH). And there's only one way for people to meet people - bring your partner!
-

My partner Vicki doesn't climb and she'll be there.
The nice, normal people(and trending to be of higher intelligence) are always welcome!
-
I decided to keep a running list at the beginning of the thread. If there's any changes or new info I will edit the first post.
-
Sounds fun! Too early for me to commit, though, so don't put me on the reservation list. But it's on my tentative calendar. Hopefully I'd have one or two second generation Pinnheads with me. Mrs. lefh tbd. If I can make it, it would probably only be for one night, so if another party has the same issue we might be able to go splitsies for the weekend.

Mikayla and I are in this boat as well.
-
I will try to go for at least one day. Not sure about camping over night though.
Noal, Thank you for organizing the event.
Hope to see some of you sooner than November.
-
Spoke to the Santa Cruz crew (Nick-me, Marnye, Bill, and Cormac). Three of us are in, 1 not sure/too early to commit. We are happy to Venmo money for campsites, etc.

Who has commitment-phobia?
We met Cormac yesterday at the Citadel.

Nick, I don't know if you reread the beginning of this thread but I added some info.
4 people will essentially take up 1/5 of the total allowed in the site. I am prioritizing the people on the list up top. All of them are friends who have attended the Masters of Mud event we used to have every year. This is basically the same event but not in its last incarnation which was similar in size to PCAD.
There are plenty of campsites available on Recgov site. As it gets closer there will be none. BAP last year brought a crew of people from Berkeley. She got her own campsite nearby and it worked great. We all still hung out around the campfire.
-
Is another group site available nearby? Perhaps we ought to reserve a single site or two if we can (and then everyone can gather around at the group site??).
-
This is basically the same event but not in its last incarnation which was similar in size to PCAD.
I guess I am just an overachiever.
-
Could also been due to the AAC camp out was the same weekend. It's a ways to Nov. and most people don't have plans for this kind of stuff that far out. Also, stuff comes up and people can't make it. This actually happened at the last get together we had.
There was another group site nearby and there are single campsites. I am not going to reserve them, have people not show up, and have a bunch of empty sites. It's easy to reserve a site. It is also easy to not show up.
I guess I am just an overachiever.
No. I think the two annual events became very similar to each other when one was originally a small gathering.
Maybe one day hopefully there will be another PCAD. You guys put a ton of hard work into those events and I admire and appreciate it. I'm sure a good deal of that was stressful.
Last year when we got together I purposely did not call it the Masters of Mud because I would prefer to have a small gathering.
Edit: I understand what I prefer is not necessarily what other people prefer. If some one wants to grab another group site I'm all for it.
-

Kelly and I would love to attend. It's been a while since we've had one of these events.

Cool. I'll add you to the list.

Maybe Atomizer can lead all of us on a conditioning tour?
(I'd have to really work myself into shape to ever do that again.)

Only if you're the Anti-bushwhack Advisor. I made some major errors when I did the tour, yet that made the BLL taste a bit better at the end.

What you say might be true. And yet you had a fantastic adventure that's still fun to read about today. Just went for it.
-
Thanks for taking the lead on this Noal.....Staci and I will be in Joshua Tree at that time, but hope to attend a future gathering, been too long....
-
Thanks Joe. Have fun in J tree.
-
Yo, Yo, Yo,
I am in and have my own site. It will be good to see the Pinns crew. I have not been climbing outdoors much since climate change has shut down access to most climbing in my local area.

-
Human caused diaper change shut me down a few extended times, but that passed.
-
Might anyone be up for Swiss sausage?
-
Yes! Those Swiss sausages are good!
-
Hey! Kim & I & hopefully Jesse will make it. Do we need to reserve a site?
-
Hey Beanolar! So, you plus two? I am only asking for people that have 4 or more people or want to sleep in their vehicle to look into reserving an additional site.
-
Hey that's my name! I'll come down for daytime shenanigans and early evening chips and salsa.
-
Cool! Hope to see you there.
-
Mikayla, my mom (Laura), and I hope to be in attendance for this get together.
If works out space wise, perfect. Though if we should find a site or sleep in cars no problem.
Thanks for reserving site Noal!
-
Cool. Look forward to seeing you all.
-
I just realized Atom was implying the need for BLLs! Luckily I found a Total Wine that had the elusive skinny can BLLs!! ;D
-
Now that we're only 3 weeks out my life has a lot more clarity. I'd love to come down Friday through Sunday with both kiddos (8 and 4). My complication is that with the young ones we would have to stay in the group site to be able to hang out with everyone in the evening. But if we do we would all be in one tent, I have no problem parking away from the campsite, and I would bring plenty of beer to share. Noal, is there room to accommodate all of us? If not I won't be offended; I know in the op you requested groups of 3+ get their own sites.
We're also planning that if we're down there Mrs. lefh would come for the day Saturday so we could take the kids to set up some TRs at Tourist Trap or someplace.
And while I'm talking about kids, beanolar, how old is yours, and might they be coming?
-
Not sure how often beano checks this site. Kim is 6 and would more likely than not - be attending.
-
Hey Shane I updated the list. Look forward to seeing you guys.
-
Thanks and thanks!

It wouldn't be proper conditioning without the BLL et al.
We might miss this event. Looks like my work has a desperate need to utilize me that weekend. I'll let you know soon.

Please tell me that the number of these jokes does not make it to triple digits. Don't tell me if for some reason there are exactly 666 of them.
Brad told me what must then be #38 earlier today, it was intense.

There are currently 94 on the list:
94. My wife and I had a major disagreement the other day. I told her that I could build a car out of spaghetti. She told me that this was impossible. So we made a bet. I worked hard and I won the bet just the other day. And man, you should have seen her face when I drove pasta.

They’re both fucking intense.

Gotta be Utah. Was it near beer?

Do they also make a Statutory Stout?

Gotta be Utah. Was it near beer?
It's described as an English brown porter (5% ABV). Flavors and aromas of chocolate, coffee, caramel, toffee, bread, hops, dark fruits, and roasted malts. I didn't detect all those flavors.
It's good stuff. We stopped at Clark's Market in Blanding after leaving Hovenweep but they didn't have booze and it was too early for the liquor store (before noon). Instead of waiting we just hit the road and happened to see the Shirttail Store at a turnoff - so we stopped and I just had to buy this. The lower alcohol content was a nice break from all the stouts I'd been enjoying. The best ones I had were all bourbon barrel aged.
Lots of bourbon barrel stouts on our last trip. The two easily available ones were Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale and Dragon's Milk.
Just about all the breweries are making bourbon barrel stouts too - they are all the rage these days. We stayed at a lot of breweries. I tasted some excellent stouts at the breweries and bought a few takeaways. Two were memorable. Crystal Lake Boathouse Reserve Imperial Stout from a liquor store in Wonder Lake ($25 for a 4-pack and aged in a rye whiskey barrel, 10.3% ABV) and Tri City Brewery's Dragon Slayer in Bay City Michigan (ABV was around 12% and only available as takeaway). Tri-City had stouts, Belgian's and some great ales. They had a cool menu board and I tried everything with a high ABV. Here is their current menu.

That was the night we struck up a conversation with an interesting couple from Annapolis. They were slumming it in a $3 million Class A. They invited us over for some high-class bourbon after we finished in the brewery (they had done the bourbon trail in KY and had quite the collection).
He said the company only makes 32 of these custom coaches a year. Evidently they make them mostly for rock stars and movie stars. He and his wife got to tour the ones made for Tom Cruise and Neil Young. It was quite the entertaining night!

The custom Harley on the back was worth far more than our rig!
Do they also make a Statutory Stout?
Answering that seems like risky business.
I could give you an old Kentucky saying but someone might get offended. It implies an answer to the question.

Is that Lynard Skynard's bus?

I'll take the old Kentucky saying please. But in the form of a question ;)

You can't play Swamp Music in somethin' that fancy.
The doors opened like the Starship Enterprise.

Talked to someone at work who went camping this past weekend at Pinns. He said he talked to a ranger and in the next couple of weeks they were planning on lifting the no fires rule for the campground.
If that happens anybody else up for grilling some stuff? I can bring some skewers of things and maybe burgers. I remember Waldo was talking about those Swiss sausages.
There are also some people who have backed out and can't make it. I think there will be plenty of room so if you are someone lurking on the site and want to attend speak up. I'm just the guy that booked the campsite. Come hang out

That would be fantastic. I was actually thinking about throwing out feelers here to see if anyone had any insight on if the fire restrictions might be changing. If they do relax I'll definitely bring some communal firewood and plenty of marshmallows to share, plus probably sausages for me and the kids.
-
Might bring a portable propane grill just in case.

Might bring a portable propane grill just in case.
I plan on it. It'll be good for quickly heating water in the morning, if nothing else. On the subject, I'll be bringing a french press, so I will have a surplus of coffee if anyone wants some. Full disclosure: I tend to lean to the strong side.
-
Hey Noal - been trying to reply to your message today but the system is not working for me. I sent you a clunky, old email.
-
Hey all looking fwd to next weekend! Kim and I will come for sure; Jesse will come if he doesnt get called to work.
Let's go get some CRUDDDDDD!!
-
Cool. See you there.
-
What's a good time to arrive to get bear gulch parking? 730 or 8? It's been a while!
-
I got a reminder for my reservation today and noticed this statement in the rules.
• Group Sites: Occupancy is limited to twenty people and five vehicles. No trailers or RV's motor homes allowed in group sites. Any self contained vehicle desiged for sleeping is considered an RV/Motor home.
I remember the old owners/camp host telling me that they didn't care how many tents were setup at the group sites - they just look at the number of vehicles. I seem to remember the first statement being the same in the old rules. I don't remember the second statement about what constitutes an RV but it may have been in there too. No idea how strict they are about policing the rules. We haven't been to the campground since the last PCAD in 2019. At that time they didn't hassle us for parking the truck camper at the group site. We'll be in site 51 this weekend and just walk over to the group site in the afternoon/evening.
I like their misspelling of designed.
-

That is probably a good idea (7:30 or 8:00). Seems like last time we were there on a Saturday it was full by 8:30. Saturday is always the worst. We have not been to the east side for a couple years and this is the busiest time of year. The earlier the better.
-
That's interesting about the number of vehicles. Here's a screen shot of my original reservation where it says 2 vehicles.
I plan on being there on Friday midday at Condor Gulch. For Saturday we could cut down on the number of cars up at the trail head by riding from the camp ground together.
-
^
I knew that was what you said - one of the reasons I wanted to share.
You might have put 2 in when you made the reservation? There is box that requires a number before it lets you move on.
Rules say 2 vehicles in individual sites and I know it used to be 5 for the group sites - and they did hassle us at PCAD about that.
• Individual Tent/RV sites: Occupancy is limited to six people, three tents and two vehicles or one vehicle and one trailer or RV/Motor home. Any self contained vehicle desiged for sleeping is considered an RV/Motor home.
Also - even though we weren't hassled for sleeping in our rigs at the last PCAD - if the owners want to enforce their rules - they could throw a wrench in the works for some folks.
Apparently - No longer a need to check in (we have always checked in) - more from their rules/need to know info;
Our store can often be very busy, so when you arrive at the campground, you do not need to come into the store to check in. Please pick up a campground map from outside the store (this has all the camp rules and information on it) and you may proceed to your campsite.
No generators (so much for electrifying the band!) I'll cancel BOC and see if the Indigo Girls are still available.
I wonder if influencers are allowed?
No hook-ups in the tent or group sites - behave yourselves people!!!
• RV sites have hookups at 120 volts with 30-amp service; Bring appropriate adapters if needed; Tent and group sites have no hook-ups. Generators are not allowed at any time in any site.
-
You might have put 2 in when you made the reservation? There is box that requires a number before it lets you move on.
I did not specify the number of people. It must be a mistake in the email. 2 cars are the limit for regular campsites.
Apparently - No longer a need to check in (we have always checked in) - more from their rules/need to know info
I have never checked in for a campsite.

My status is in a bit of flux. My daughter's been fighting an infection for the last week+. Overall she's doing okay, but she may not be okay enough to go camping this weekend. If she's not I may come down with just Calvin or solo Saturday-Sunday, or just one day or the other. As soon as my situation clarifies I will update. Though it's likely most of you will not be in internet service by the time I lnow anything solid.
-
No problem. Hope your daughter gets better soon.
-
Hey, if y'all are alright with it, I may end up coming with Natalie this weekend. We still need to confirm some things first before I can definitively say though.
-
See you there
-
Just some follow up. Brad knows already since we've talked about it. In the past six weeks, I've driven to and climbed in Vegas twice, and fought off Covid in between. I just got back yesterday, and I'm tired. I'm going to take one more day, and Elaine and I will meet y'all on Saturday, if that's okay?
Thanks for organizing, Noal.
-
Hello Fellow Mud'nCruders!
I just heard about this weekend, and I will try and make it down. Dina has to work so I will be solo. It would be great to see everyone!
-
Come hang out. Would be great to see you!
-
I just heard about this weekend, and I will try and make it down.
Duuuude! We can talk about the year it was just you, me, Kat, Phil and Lisa    :devildevil:
-
My clan is officially out for the weekend. Have fun everyone, and we'll cross paths again eventually.
-
Deploying to production Monday. So stuck doing validation testing tomorrow when coworker is around. :(
the elusive Amac sighting would have made the trip!
Besides I'm embarrassingly out of climbing shape. Might be silly to think, since wife and I enjoy sleeping in on weekends, but a Sunday jaunt up Big Bad West I'll try to keep in the back pocket plan.
-
I was thinking of flying down but I got covid.
-
Bummer, hope it’s a short version.
I flew west this year.
-
Clink, your name was taken in vain up at Mud & Crud. You need to come out and defend yourself! Also, Brad didn't piggy-back me up the hill (or down!) I still can't believe it. At least JC offered.
-
What more in life could one attain, that would be of more value, than having Waldo looking out for oneself?
I want to be back, time will tell. I do apologize for being god-like.
-
Freya and I arrived late Saturday night and only saw a handful of folks Sunday morning. It was brief, but it was really great to see people!
We spent Sunday at The Hand with Kurt and Brad (and briefly with Dave). It was a blast. Freya and I climbed the Salathe Route with lots of encouragement/beta/heckling from Brad. Kurt and I then climbed Love Line, which was one of my more adventurous climbs so far at Pinnacles. Brad kept saying "Everyone misses a bolt on the second pitch because they don't go far enough to the left after the fifth bolt." After hearing him say this nine times, I felt sure that I just had to keep going left after the fifth bolt. I found the sixth bolt, no problem... and then I kept going left... Oops. I ended up traversing about 20 feet off-route and around the corner before finally gathering my wits and retreating whence I came. Time on the wall was much longer than necessary, but it was a spectacular route. Kurt and I were both impressed and delighted.
Hope to see y'all out there again soon!
-
Wonderful timing Noal (lucky). Excellent weather for the event. And then last night it rained significantly and everything is wet this morning.
-
Responding to Jacks post, Dave and Kurt swung leads up Salathe Route. And this wasn’t Dave’s first time up the route. He first climbed it with his brother. In 1971.
-
It was great to see everyone and many thanks go to Noal and Caleb for supplying and cooking some seriously yummy fare both nights. Caleb's drinks, self-caught tuna and ice cream sundaes were not to be missed. Noal made some fish and chicken ka-bobs to add with Bob's sausage Friday and we all ate like kings both nights. I am especially grateful for the "way above and beyond" generosity shown by Noal and Caleb. We supplemented the conversations with some hearty laughter and I sensed everyone was enjoying themselves.
I'll post some more later - just wanted to get some thanks out and also thank everybody else that made this a fun time.
-
Even though I was only there for what was effectively one day, I had a great time! It was fantastic to meet everyone who came out. Thanks for having me everyone! :)
-
I didn’t eat like a king. I ate like a pig.
Yes, a very good get together.
-
Thanks to everyone who came out. I enjoyed visiting and hanging out with you all! Thanks to Waldo for the Swiss sausages, Caleb for the kick ass tuna and banana splits, and Dave for the table cloth and use of his stove for making dinner.
We managed to get in a little bit of trail work and route maintenance this weekend too. Brad , Amity, Caleb and crew redirected the trail out to Mud n Crud. Brad, Dave and I updated the anchor at Maniac's Delight 4th class from a hangerless stud to a two bolt anchor. John Cook and I re bolted Chimney Sweep. We also replaced three bolts on Generation Gap with the Climberdude on Sunday. Brad replaced a bolt on the bolt ladder at the Hand.
I'm thinking we do it again in March or April. Let me know and I can go ahead and grab another group site.
-
I was thinking of flying down but I got covid.
So sorry we missed you Mud.
I wondered if you might pull a surprise visit but also knew no one would divulge if you were coming.
Get well soon   :yesnod:
-

Here's the old hardware from Chimney Sweep. We had two options - replace only the hangers (Leepers) or replace everything and preserve the route for at least another 100 years. We chose the latter option. One cool thing we were able to do was replace the carbon steel anchor bolt with a stainless bolt and reuse Jim's SMC stainless hanger. It had Jim's initials etched with a Dremel tool. It was really satisfying to walk away knowing we kept that history and updated the lead bolts with current state of the art. The other anchor bolt and hanger were already stainless.

One of the mid belay bolts on Generation Gap. There was a huge void behind the hanger making removal useless (for reusing the hole) so we left this one for the sake of history. Note the unusual lack of rust on the star dryvin (aluminum doesn't rust). This star dryvin bolt and homemade aluminum hanger are both 40 years old.

The other bolt was a star dryvin with an SMC death hanger. It was in a strange location on a huge ledge (at your feet). The Dude tapped it out using only a tuning fork - the entire thing came out in one piece. :yikes: It was a 2 inch nail. Pictured on the right. The old lead bolt snapped off while I was trying to pull it. The surface was majorly crooked - causing my puller tool to bend the bolt - so it snapped instead of coming loose as it should have. Sometimes they just snap from the amount of force too.

The old lead bolt as I found it - before I tried to pull it (the nut was barely on and the hanger floppy)

Here we are working away (me at the lead bolt, Noal and the Dude at the pitch one anchor/mid-belay)
