Title: 2024 FALL GET TOGETHER
Post by: NOAL on July 09, 2024, 09:02:53 AM
Friday November 1st and Saturday November 2nd

It's that time again.  Actually the time to reserve the group site was a few months ago but I completely spaced it.  Oops. That means no group site this year.  I have two adjacent campsites reserved site 46 and 47.  This seemed to work pretty well year before last.  There are still a bunch of unreserved sites if you want to bring a crew. Hell, there's even some of those new fancy tent cabins on there for those who want to throw a house party.

I will bring the TACO HOUR grill again. Skewers, burgers, some side dishes. Additional cook stoves or small propane grills were handy last year.  Feel free to bring stuff for the grill and other food if you want to do a potluck kinda thing.  BYOB unless you like Miller Lite.

Look forward to seeing all the usual peeps!

As you know from our text messages, Vicki and I are in. I'm still considering though what I may or may not do over this weekend.

Will I climb? Or just sit in camp and eat?

I will go for one day (Saturday only), but may show up on Friday evening.  I will eat only, no climbing for me.

I will climb out of my chair to eat, or if I hear a Tecate pop.

Booked sites 48 and 21 so Brad can stretch out on long hammock and watch my location by satellite, in real time, as I try to catch up to his current point of progress on the Grand Enchantment Trail. Please try and stuff Brad full each feeding time and with plenty of snacks and Tecate in between so we are more evenly matched when hiking in February.

My grandkids will be doing a sleepover both nights at JC and KC's. I still have to ask them, but i'm sure they will at least offer to tell them campfire stories that they will never forget.

Noal, is there a weigh in and out planned?

For a moment there thought you were really going to come hang out this year.

Weigh in weigh out could be funny.  Person who loses weight gets a prize and person who gains the most gets a prize.  Lose weight category could be JC/KC or Marco and Mikayla

I don't get together for Fall. I'm a climber, I must not Fall. I do occasionally Autumn.

Putting this on calendar. Since I'll be on the California State Climbing Team by then, I should have no excuses.

If it's been long enough, I get full onsight credit for any leads I've done before, right?

Yes you do.

For those of your age we modify the French phrase for onsight (I think they use the words "a vu?").  For seniors who can't remember shit (CRS) such an ascent will be called a Deja Vu. For seniors who have descended into CRAFT? We just make fun of them behind their backs.

You may want to talk to Mr Ed about that percentage for Munge.

You nailed my personal philosophy on climbing in between large meals each day. Full onsights get an extra letter grade. All those 10d's baby, are 11a directly after lunch.

Is anyone sticking around for Sunday, November 3rd? I'll be out of town on the 1st and flying back to San Jose (from visiting my mom in Portland) on the 2nd. Would love to meet up if anyone will still be around that Sunday.

Alacia will be at the park and I think is planning on meeting you all at the campground on the 1st.

Hi All!
This is my first Fall Gathering. Super excited!
I got a campsite..don’t recall the number right now. I’m showing up Friday night and leaving mid day Sunday.

How does the food sitch work? Do we chip in for cost of the main dishes and then pot luck the rest?!
Is the group grub just for dinners so we bring our own breakfast and trail food I assume?
I have an extra two burner Coleman I’ll bring.

Looking forward to meeting new friends and climbing some classics with legends.

~Jamie

Are propane fires allowed? Is there any input to know about the fire restrictions this weekend?

Hi Jamie,

I reserved two campsites for anyone who wants to come. You are more than welcome to stay in either site.

No need to chip in for for food.  It's pretty informal.  Last year I brought some things to share for dinner on Friday and Saturday.  Caleb also brought some food to grill and ice cream on Saturday.  It was fun to hang out and grill so I thought we could do that again this year.  Breakfast and lunch folks kind of do their own thing.

Look forward to seeing you too!  I was planning on going climbing on Friday.  If anybody is going to be around during the day Friday let me know.

There has not been much rain so I would imagine the fire restriction is still in place.

They no longer allow the propane campfire.  Seems that someone was using one and the adjacent campsite got jealous because they did not have one and could not have fire.  Jealous campers tried to police the propane campers and tell them absolutely no campfires of any sort were allowed.  Argument ensued and fist fight occurred.  No more propane camp fire.  Also according to the ranger people were sitting under small trees using propane campfires.

Aw no cookies this time?!

Say, what time do you need to show up on sunday to snag a parking spot around bear gulch? The kids and Jesse will cry if we have to take the shuttle bus.

Also any recommendations for kid friendly crags? We were going to just do discovery wall with some nice rope gun parents, but open to other suggestions.

Right?!  C'mpn Cookies.  You can park the rig in Clink's camp site.  I promise I won't put any cilantro in the guacamole.

The shuttle service has been suspended indefinitely.  I found this out last year when I had a flat tire and showed up a little late.  Thought that they just stopped running it in the winter but turns after I looked into it that there is not enough funding to pay the shuttle driver.  At first this seemed bad but could be a good thing.  Once people realize they have to walk a couple of extra miles they might not come back to visit and the parking situation could get better.

I would say get there at 8 to 8:30 if you want to park in the lot

It did snow. Not enough for the fun stuff, but alas the prognosticated future knows no variables just outcomes. % chance for tomorrow is dwindling. :(

How festive! Ahead of its time.

Hey is there topo for crud and mud? We have a small gaggle of children that may enjoy its friendly climbs.

I heard from Alex that the top of the upper crust is not so approachable for TR. too bad. I ALSO heard we wouldn't let her put a bolt on dad's crazy runout route??? For the love of the children!?!?

Ahead of its time.

Hey is there topo for crud and mud?

top of the upper crust is not so approachable for TR.

Better to just pick up the phone and call me if you want timely information. I can tell you what I know but I don't check the forum like I used to.
No topo for Crud and Mud. There will be a partial photo topo someday but it won't show that many routes (too much stuff in the way). Gotta have the list.

I don't think Upper Crust is particularly great for kids. Too much bare dirt, most of which is off camber and slippery/uncomfortable with PO all around the borders. Not to mention shady if it's cold.

Crocodile Crag has nice sun and two long 5.7's but staging isn't great there either (it's better though). At least it is secluded and sunny. We took you and Kim there when she was still a baby in a backpack carrier.

Looking at the rain gauge I wonder if the camp host allowed fires after the rain Friday night (gauge showed 0.06). I bet you guys had some great weather today - we sure did. It was pretty windy though and I saw gusts to 30 predicted down there (Mesowest shows 29 for today).

Either way I hope it was great.

Maybe next year we can have a Mashers of Spuds get together where we all make mashed potato dishes with a taste off for best recipe and a spud-eating contest.

Rosa Pacheco’s corn salsa
(for those who liked it on Saturday night)

Ingredients:

One 10 oz can of whole corn kernels, drained
4 tbsp. of prepared salsa (I prefer Herdez Casera, medium hot)
One slice of red onion, finely chopped
1/2 of a jalapeno pepper, finely chopped (or more if you dare! Be advised: leaving seeds in will increase heat. I prefer heat. Some don’t.)
2 tbsp. of sugar (or to taste — another spoon won’t hurt)
2tbsp. of rice wine vinegar
a sprinkle of sea salt

Combine ingredients in a bowl, stir and refrigerate. Stir again after an hour or so. Taste and adjust as you wish. Serve with good quality corn chips.

Feel free to add more or less of any ingredient to suit your own preferences. I’ve made this many times and I rarely measure any more. I just taste at the end.
