Title: GPS for biking
Post by: Uncle Stinky on August 20, 2007, 03:03:56 PM
Mudworm- I liked the GPS thing you had on your bike and the way it mapped out the trail on to satellite   photo  and elevation chart.  Can they all do that, Is it special software?  I liked the way yours clipped to the bike.  I thought I would ask you  before I started shopping for one.  Jeff

Uncle Stinky, the GPS/HRM I have is Garmin Edge 305. It is for bicyclists. So, it is normally bundled with cadence and speed sensor. I bought it at a good price. It seems like the sale ($276) is still going on at  Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-305HR%2B-Bicycle-Monitor-Cadence/dp/B000BS4PZW/ref=pd_bbs_3/002-0043581-5705619?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1187669697&sr=8-3).

When I used it, I liked it. I'm an engineer, so it excites me to look at all the data after a ride. And it is even more exciting to look at the route in Google Earth (with satellite images). If you get a Garmin, it is almost certain that you will become a MotionBased (http://www.motionbased.com) user. That's where you get a file that can be opened by Google Earth.

However, I found myself use it less and less. Especially if I am repeating a route. Also, the little plastic bike mount where you snap the GPS broke on my mountain bike. My device fell on the ground. Now one button stopped working.  Having had this experience, I wish I had bought a Forerunner 305 (also on sale (http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerunner-Wrist-Mounted-Navigator-Personal/dp/B000CSWCQA/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-0043581-5705619?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1187670216&sr=1-1) right now).  It comes with a wrist band, which I think will last longer than the bike mount that comes with Edge.  However, you do have to purchase cadence and speed sensor extra.

If just a HRM, Mr Mud's hardcore cyclist friend Tom really likes his Polar 625X, which is a bit more expensive.

Happy shopping!

i have the Edge 305 and love it. Garmin  actually has a $75 rebate going right now which can put the unit under $200 if you shop smart. Get it!

How well do these things work at slower speeds, hiking, peak bagging backpacking?  I guess they would work just as well.
