Title: Just checking: Grotto access
Post by: mudworm on October 23, 2007, 08:38:41 AM
There were following email exchanges on Rock Rendezvous mailing list. Does anyone have any most up-to-date information?

I hear they closed the access to the grotto. The guidebook says the
cliff itself is on BLM land. Can anyone with local knowledge suggest
an alternative access that doesn't involve crossing private land?

>How reliable is the source that told you the Grotto is closed?   We
>were there a few times last winter and it was open.  Please let me
>know if you hear confirmation that it is closed - I was looking forward
>to doing some crack practice there this winter.

>>I used the Grotto access and parking area just a few weeks ago
>>(early Oct) with no problems.

Latest I heard on the ML:

I heard that rumor from some Valley old-timers. According to these
guys, the rangers were tired of thieves stealing copper wire and
machinery on their land. Apparently, the closure became effective 2
weeks ago, with the local sheriff dishing out $700 fines to
trespassers to enforce the ban.
Since I haven't head anything from other sources, I was hoping people
in this forum could confirm or deny the rumor. Hope for the best...

Doubt it. It's a public easement though private property. Hence why they never clean up the road.

Brad once said if they tried anything like closing the access.....wait it's also Pinnacles season to. Screw it, I'm sleeping in and hitting the Pinnacles.
