Title: Pinncles in May
Post by: mynameismud on May 05, 2008, 08:18:52 AM
Went down to the Pins on Saturday.  The weather was perfect.  It felt really good to get down there after a fairly stressful two weeks at work.  Hiking up to a new area and hanging out was very nice indeed.

No Hooks, No Raps, No Hangs, No errors.  Many people knew of this route but no one knew where it was.  Jack was not talking.  Well Brad and his Guidebook quest managed to find it and the effort was well worth it.

This route is on very good rock with great views.  The bolts are spaced but not overly so.  There are good up drafts so the TV's cruise by regularly and the cliffs swallows dart about.  The wild flowers are still in bloom.  Finding this place can be a bit of a challenge but once you know the way it is not to bad.

The big fun was just  climbing with Mr Mud. Haven't gotten too many days down there with him this season. Felt like two old war-horses up to it again. Between the two of us there are dam few climbs in the whole of the Monument that we haven't done (and almost none that we haven't at least been on). Nice too to get Ethical Divide. Small climb, but it ended my season with one more tick, bringing my route count at Pinns to a nice, even, 775. Gunning for over 800 by the end of next season.

Anyone reading this knows that Mr Mud is one of my best friends on the planet. So forgive me one story, typical of him. This is almost perfectly verbatum:

Mr Mud, while leading No Raps, No Hooks, etc, before the first bolt, knowing from the guidebook that the route is rated 5.10b: "This thing is rated pretty conservatively."

Brad, in response: "Not to break your heart, but Jack originally rated it 5.9+."

Mr Mud, in response: "Yeah, well that's 5.9+ for you."

Mr Mud again, after finishing his lead, as Brad, now following, pulls onto the summit block: "Two stars for sure, but it's only 5.10a."

Gotta love total consistancy, year in and year out. Thanks again for an excellent day.

Thanks for the story Brad. Sounds like a good time had by you both. I've always loved that about climbing. You can be having an awful day (2 weeks in Mr Mud's world) and it's reduced in a moment on the right route, with the right partner, in the right place.

Does doing Ordeal xxx of times count.

Guess I need to ratchet up the new routes to catch up to Brad.

Was at the West Side with Kelly yesterday. It was perfect weather and not another climber to be seen.

what did you climb on the west side?

seeing 2 different weather forecasts for the weekend depending on the site.  one set of sites call for highs in 78-85 range, the other 85-102.
who to believe?
