Hi all,
I go down to the Pinnacles quite a lot, and I am looking for some recommendations for good (and relatively safe) boulding sites, where I can practice. I used to climb with some experienced climbers years ago, but I depended on them for equipment, advice, etc. I want to be more self-sufficient now, and I thought I would start by doing some bouldering at the Pinnacles to get back into it. Any good spots you could recommend for beginners? Perhaps some relatively low traverses?
Thanks.

West Side entrance there is a bouldering rock. Can't miss it as you walk towards Machete. All kinds of stuff around there.
Where are you located? Is pinns really the best bouldering nearest to you?
-
I have a place in Paicines so I'm down that way most weekends - on the East side. Any East side recommendations?

get some gear and instruction and do some toprope soloing. You'll get stronger faster and climb better rock.
With that said, there is a traverse on Discovery Wall, and on Moses Spring Wall.
Discovery Wall is the big wall facing east as you walk up into Bear Gulch.
Moses Spring wall is on the right a few hundred yards after the green grotto like area at the end of Discovery Wall.
neither are great, but if you're desperate...

you might want to check out boldering.com. a wealth of information over there.

Ban salad for that post.
There is also some bouldering in the creek down below the Guardian. Be cautious of PO. Out by Chimney Sweep there is a long traverse with some up problems.
With a mini tracion, 200 ft rope, and a few long slings you can do a ton of solo top roping. Be cautious of the way your rope goes over edges.

do 'good' and bouldering belong in the same sentence?
-
Thanks for all the posts. It's really helpful for someone new to climbing at the Pinnacles. If there are some good beginner climbs where I can hike up to set a top rope and then climb solo that would be great. Any suggestions good for a beginner? I'll take a course from a local climbing gym to be sure I know what I'm doing. Also, I'm planning to go to the Rockpile Rendezvous on June 7th and hope to get some advice from climbers there.

ordeal, cleft, ratrace

To be honest, I don't think "climbing solo" and "beginner" should appear in the same sentence. I might have mentioned this before -- a climbing gym is always a good starting point to meet other climbers. You know each other's style and ability; and you live close to each other, so it will be easy to organize outings.
Have fun and be safe!

Then there are those that think the two words climbing and gym should never be used together.
Climbing and rock, well, say no more.
-
Pffft, you say that only because you are jealous of those of us who can actually manage to get off work and go to the gym. ::)
Climbing and rock, well, say no more.
What? You can't use those words together either? ???
-
Thanks to all. Don't worry. I'll be safe. I'm not new to climbing - I have just been overly dependent on more experienced climbing friends. And I have never climbed at the Pinnacles.
-
You have been missing out on all the fun.
And I have never climbed at the Pinnacles.

What about location beta on Californiabouldering.com???
Did the Pinnacles section ever get completed?

Went to Planet Granite last night to get some practice and check on classes. Had a great experience. Lots of friendly climbers helping me out in the bouldering section. But, their class schedule doesn't really work for me.
I did a search and found: http://www.castlerockclimbingschool.com/ Apparently, they go to the Pinnacles a lot. Now, I'm thinking that perhaps I should just hire them for some instruction at the Pinnacles. It's kind of pricey but might be the fastet, best way to get going. Do you know these guys and what do you think?

must be brand new. I've never heard of them. Could be one of the local guides did a name and brand change.
there's no names mentioned on the 'about us' page

Here's a link to the featured guides page: http://www.castlerockclimbingschool.com/guides.html

hrm, I don't know em, but you could google the names and see what comes up.

I called and made a reservation. My guide/instructor will be Rick Picar. He seems to have excellent credentials. I was told he climbs the Pinnacles. Don't know if he's a member of this forum.

LOL, I do know Rick!!
He's a good egg. He's invested a lot of time and energy into building his outdoor resume.
