Title: recommendations on parts
Post by: Ubergoober on July 02, 2008, 10:21:28 AM
Next Wednesday, I'm rebuilding the SC Blur I just bought off my buddy at work. I want to put hydraulic disc brakes on it and will also need to get some wheels. Recommendations on both? I don't need super high-end for either. Not ever having hydraulics before, what's the maintenance factor on those? Any recommendations on where to get some (aside from craigslist or eBay - don't have the time or patience to search)? Probably easier too if I get the wheels & the brakes together and have the rotors mounted. Thoughts?

Avid Juicy 7's get good reviews and are inexpesive.  Easy to mount I can drop by and assist.

Wheels.  Passion Trails, Bicycle Outfitters, Sunrise (this place get great reviews).

Go with xt or xtr.  Or ST Swiss hubs with Stans rims  - the best

Yes, go to Passion... Talk to John. He's a good mechanic and one crazy dude (he's climbed Everest and Denali, but don't tell him I said so... =)).

F'ueco, do you know John personally? I'm surprised that being a hardcore roadie, you are quite in the MTB loop  ??? -- he did Denali only a week ago, I heard.  What's his mechanic background?

I do know John pretty well... I travelled with him the first time he went to Nepal. He's a quality dude... He's been working as a mechanic since almost that long ago (2004 I think).

They are closed tomorrow, July 4th, but open Sat and Sun. I didn't see John at the shop yesterday. Not sure if he is back to work yet.

Uber, I run Magura's hydro's and they rock...once you get them dialed in. Juicy's (both 5 and 7) are nice with the 7 being a step up. As far as Wheels go, the last set I bought before my King's were from Webcyclery.com whom I'd order a 2 sets in a few years from. Good solid company out of Oregon. Having said that for less $$ XTR's are really nice and you can get screaming deals on them from time to time.

Good luck!

Need to put in a good word for Palo Alto Bikes.  Good solid shop.  I have not been to their service department in a while but they are usually solid.  Just went there to buy a bottom bracket.  brought the bike in and they installed for free.

Another gal was there and was having problems with flats.  The mechanic showed her how to replace a tube in the shop.  while doing so notice there wasn't any rim tape so he added rim tape the the rim for her.  No charge.

OK...in typical Ubergoober fashion, went completely off the deep end. :)

Damn you all for recommending Passion Trail Bikes!!! You realize what you all were doing, weren't you? You might as well have given a child molester the keys to a preschool!

First, I will say, the guys at Passion Trail are VERY cool and VERY knowledgeable. I am, of course, a total, bike neophyte retard and after spending a couple of hours (yes, a couple of hours) with Darryl and Charles, I feel like an expert on hubs and rims now.

So...what did I get?

First, the brakes: Shimano XT M775 Servo Wave hydraulic brake system w/180mm XT RT78 centerlock rotors.

If that wasn't bad enough...Darryl and Charles talked me into spending a little more $$ for a custom wheelset. So, I got Stans ZTR 355 rims - which can go tube or tubeless (I'm going tubeless using the Stans system w/sealant, but I have the flexibility to switch back if I want).

For the front wheel, I'm getting a Hope Pro2 hub. This hub will allow me to start off w/quick release but change over to 20mm if/when I decide to change over if/when I upgrade my fork. Will slap a Specialized 2.3 Eskar Control tire on it.

Rear wheel, I'm getting a WTB LaserDisc Lite hub. Will slap a Specialized 2.0 The Capitan Control tire on that. Both wheels are going to get blue colored nipples and black spokes.

Don't ask me what I dropped. Actually, it wasn't as bad as buying a pair of Cobalts or something, but "a bit" more than I originally planned. The good news is that I've got a killer custom wheelset that, unless I take some really stupid drop or hit a truck or run over my bike, should outlast the bike.

Muds, Squiddo, Munge - you will all need to drag me out for some big rides now so I can justify my purchase!!!

NICE! Ahhhh yeah, lets go. I'm about to get a CK built for my singlespeed. Passion better watch out. Wait, it's the other way around. I'm the one that needs to watch out...watch my bank account.

F4, get your bike fixed ya knob.

How much of a monster can a mudworm be?

No, he SANDBAGS!!!!

I really do not think that I exaggerate all that much and I rarely sandbag.  It is simply a matter of being misunderstood.

Got the wheels and the brakes today. I hand tightened the cassette on the rear wheel and put them on the bike. She looks sooooooo preeeeeeeety!!!

The brakes I think are going to be a bit of a project. Anyone want to help this week?  ??? ;D :-*

Last night, got the hydraulic brakes and new wheels on the Blur and took her for a short little spin on the road. She's just about ready for a real ride. I need to bring the Gary Fisher over to Chain Reaction today to get the right SPD off with a pedal wrench. I need to tweak the front & rear derailleurs a little bit, too. If all goes well, I may take her out tomorrow.

Oh! And props to Mud for stopping by to help out.

Not that I did anything.  But Uber is definitely whipped.  I dropped by after a hard day at work and he did not even offer me a beer.  I do not know why he is building that bike up.  He may as well sell it and use that money to upgrade the kitchen or somethin.  :)

ha ha, it's like being in the desert with no water and suddenly coming across a oasis. He's drinking deep now and soon will swim. Taking the analogy a step further, will he drown?

How funny, we just got one too! Well, not exactly new. It is a hand-me-down from Mud's friend from work who has interest in Mud's well being. It's bigger, newer than our old one and its oven works.  :D

I think Mud was longing a beer because he hasn't gotten one at home. I'm the one who does all the shopping and I almost never go to the beer isle.  ;D

Mudworm, that alone qualifies as spousal abuse and it's wrong. Buy the man some damn beer....he works hard and looked sad at the gym on Tuesday.

Perhaps I'll bring a cooler full of ice and beer to the gym.

Well, it looks like Mud does not lack friends who are interested in his well being.  :D

He looked sad at the gym because he bonked! Not due to lack of beer though.

My apologies for not offering a beer. Unfortunately I was fresh out AND I was a little distracted by my new ride.  ;D

HOWEVER, if you and mudworm would like to have dinner with me, I will gladly supply you with beer.

Honey, get off Uber's back, will ya?  ::)

Uber, we'd love to have dinner with you. Thank you. Not for the beer. I just miss Kelly.  :D
