Most posters here know my 13 year old daughter Katie. She's a beauty, tall as her mother now, seemingly all legs. She's a great hiker, climbs with me now and then, and she always seems to have a great outlook on life (except when the subject at hand is how cool her dad is - she seems to choke up a bit on that subject).
So, Katie joined the kids climbing team at the local gym this season. Cool; she seems to enjoy climbing more with other people, so I think she'll enjoy the team. But, when I picked her up after practice recently, she wasn't wearing her "normal" climbing shoes. (Normally she wears her mother's shoes - in fact she borrows a lot of Vic's clothes too). Apparently her mom's shoes are so tight they really hurt. So, we bought her a larger pair of shoes, a pair the coach had on hand. According to Katie, they fit, so I didn't pay much attention.
In the way of most teenagers, Katie misplaced one of her new shoes between her last practice and tonight's practice. She knew I'd be angry, so she spent an hour this afternoon looking. But, no luck, she had one shoe. So, she came up with a solution. She went to the garage and grabbed a pair of my climbing shoes. This gave her a ready solution to propose when the time came to tell me about the lost shoe. Upon hearing her tale, and her supposed solution, I got angry, but not too. How can you get really angry when the "solution" is so patently ludicrous? The thought that my climbing shoes would fit her. Most amusing.
One problem though. My shoes fit her. Perfectly. Holy crap, she's 13 years old, how can she wear men's size 10? She's passed up lot's of my climbing partners in height already. Laura, who's known her since birth. Jennifer, Hope, and others (and she's creeping up on many of my male climbing partners too). I think I just realized something- if she ever grows into those feet (and she's still got lots of time) she's going to be taller than I am.
Oh, and she found the shoe. The coach had it, she'd left it behind at the last practice.

Hahahaha... I'm sorry, but I enjoyed reading it. ;D
-
cute story
-
Liked the way she was thinking a step ahead.
-
Great story! I am sure she has surpassed at least one of your male climbing partners in height...

I think you're right. But he hasn't been posting for a while. Is he still overseas?
-
I think he is back, or will be very soon. Probably all jet lagged.
-
Jet lag is for people who need sleep. I think he just has more important things to do than posting here.
-
pfft, as if there is anything more important than climbing related things.
>:D

Or telling F4B to DIE!!!!

I'm back from my trip. 14 days, 5 countries, 55 hours on planes, 25,000 miles.
I was promoted today to Group Manager. Hopefully, I can start delegating now (and start climbing again).
Oh and F4B - DIE and then DIE some more.
-
congrats!
-
Nice job on the promotion. Although, on second thought it'll probably make you so cocky that now you'll insist on leading routes.
-
Too Uber....love and kisses back at you!
Congrats as well.

nope, he'll be working twice as hard, now we'll never see that guy.

We all know Robert is right. But weren't we all suposed to humor Jeff that, yeah, he's not a workaholic, and yeah, it's all easy times from here on out?
-
Thanks for the congrats everyone!
Unfortunately, with a global recession, I'm not in any position right now to bitch about my workload...plus my daughter is going to college in >gulp< 2.5 years and that college fund needs some attention.
Some good news...the kids are moving to Colorado. This is 100% guaranteed - paper work completed and the prof has officially resigned. They are moving in July. So not only will they be closer, but I can take them climbing when I visit!!
-
Now that requires a hearty Congratulations.
-
Yeah, that's big time! What part of Colorado?
-
yes, but Uber how are all of us going to fit in your subaru for our Colorado road trip?
these are the truly high tech questions we need answers on! back to work on this very important issue!
-
Ft Collins. RMNP is practically in their backyard. :)
-
There are good mtb trails too.
-
didnt see any of this until today. congrats on both fronts uber, you certainly deserve it.

I meant to update this with the new year. Every year I measure the girl's heights on the edge of their door. I use a level and a sharpie marker. In calendar 2008, Katie grew 3 1/8 inches.

Dang.
