Title: Figure 9 -- My Favorite Rappel Knot [video]
Post by: mudworm on February 25, 2009, 09:59:04 PM
I made the video for some people on RR mailing list asking about the knot. I thought I should share it here. But of course, you all have your own favorite knot. So, I won't even try to sell it.

I still prefer the over hand on a bite.  Simple, strong, small and a very low profile.

Yep......seems like a great knot though having used the overhand many times....a toss up. Then again, I was brought up chewing on the double fisherman's. Damned me if I just can't give it up. Like a good wife, I keep going back to it again and again. Ok, bad comparison but....the double fisherman's is not the BEST knot although it is reliable:-)

Seriously though, that "change" is a tough one...for me at least. The first rap on the new knot is always the little thought in the back of the mind. The one that says, "euro death knot eh....will it REALLY hold?" Talus isn't a cozy bed to drop onto from hundreds of feet up. Reminds me of the time I switch my knot to a double bowline. Never did fail and it sure was easier to untie after resting my fat ass (note, not PHAT ass).

Over hand on a bite is reliable.

It will not fail and has a lower profile than any other knot.  It bugged me at first but not so much any more and I have done more raps on it than I can remember.

Mud, It's all your fault!  >:( After I asked you about the terminology last night, I replied to the mailing list talking about knots "on a bite".  Of course, people were too kind to point out that we should not bite our ropes. (I might bite you just for misleading me.)

First of all, it is "bight"!

Second of all, a bight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bight_(knot)) is a bend in the middle of a rope. It's not the case when you tie two ropes together for rappel. The knot you are talking about is called "flat overhand bend".

BTW, I just saw this link http://www.xmission.com/~tmoyer/testing/EDK.html. I'll read it when I get a chance. This is a place holder for it.
