Title: Lunch/After Work Rides and their times
Post by: mynameismud on April 12, 2009, 09:10:48 AM
This thread is used to track our lunch/after work rides and their times.

The rides we have done include:
1. BOOB: Bohlman/On-Orbit/Bohlman (http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ca/saratoga/807124966471648120). And we usually meet at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Saratoga (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=14103+Saratoga+Ave.,+Saratoga,+CA,+95071&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=37.39588,-122.139935&sspn=0.386222,0.617981&ie=UTF8&z=16) (the last one on the right side before downtown Saratoga approaching from Hwy 85). In the winter, we meet in downtown (Public Parking on 3rd St). This route has been done in Low Key series a couple of times in the past. (2007 (http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2007/week3/results.html) 1996 (http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/1996/result6.html))
2. BOOB Low Key variation: This ride (http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ca/saratoga/106125036026520577) is just a variation of BOOB. We turn left on Norton Rd shortly after the start and it eventually dumps us on On Orbit. Some people say it's a little steeper and more sustained. Low Key Series (http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2009/week6/) will be doing this variation on Nov 9, 2009.
3. OLH: Old La Honda (http://graphics.stanford.edu/~lucasp/grade/oldlahonda.html). This is a classic hill climb near Woodside. Low Key Series has been doing this ride many times, and Mudworm participated this year (2009 (http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2009/week2/results.html)).
4. Montebello: Montebello Rd (http://graphics.stanford.edu/~lucasp/grade/montebello.html) is a classic hill climb near Stevens Creek Reservoir. Again, this is usually the opening climb for Low Key Series each year.

I propose we meet again by the church (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=14103+Saratoga+Ave.,+Saratoga,+CA,+95071&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=37.39588,-122.139935&sspn=0.386222,0.617981&ie=UTF8&z=16). Rolling at 5:30. There is a bathroom in downtown we can stop at before hitting the bottom of Bohlman.

Once again a PR for both of us.  Part way up the hill I passed a guy.  He rode my wheel for a while before passing me at which point I rode his wheel for a while.  I caught a bit of a second wind so I picked up the pace and managed to pass him and take the lead and set a good pace through the steeper sections.  After the grade backed off he once again pulled ahead, then set pace to the top.

At the top he said "Thank you, I needed to dig down for some motivation for that one".  I returned the Thanks.  I was very happy to see the sub 21 time.  I would really like to get a sub 20.  We shall see.

Mr. Mud was holding back last time we were on OLH! Well, I'm happy with the PR.

Okay, this Friday, BOOB ride. Roll at 5:30 from the church (see link below). We won't be able to hang out long because we have a dinner engagement back in La Honda afterwards.

Muds,  Sorry I will not be able to make this week.  I blew my rear tire today on Del purta Canyon.  I went through two tubes and started a 5 mile walk out at 98-100 degree heat with no water...  Lucky for me a 87 year man named Burt stop and ask me if I wanted a ride.  I will be there next week.  I may be in Anodale on Sunday..  Mud I will call you Friday night..

I just got back from a nice little 20 mile jaunt. Did three reps on the Calaveras "wall" (that's the steep part at the top) along with the ride out and back. Just over 20 miles. I felt really "good" on that last rep! Next time I'll do either Sierra or the climb up Felter before doing the reps...  >:D

Today's lunchtime ride: did the first 1/2 mile of Sierra Road and Old Calaveras (along with the short hill up Downing Road to Ed Levin Park). Distance was just a touch over 30 miles, and a little under two hours elapsed time ) with perhaps 1000 feet of climbing.

Actually, it's 17 seconds. But are you guys saying shaving 2 minutes off is all equal regardless of baseline?
Title: Re: Lunch/After Work Rides and their times
Post by: mynameismud on June 11, 2009, 05:44:06 PM
That is correct baseline does not matter.  It is the time difference that matters.  So yes if he shaves off 2 minutes I have to meet or exceed that.

How do you guys ride that thing so fast? It took me 50 minutes on Saturday... Granted, my low gear is a 34-26 (and I'd already done Redwood Gulch), but still... Crazy!

We practice almost every Friday.  The triple does help.  I use the middle ring (a 40) up to the wall then have to drop down to the 30.  My large cog in the back is a 27.  I also drop down for the steep part of On Orbit.  I am trying to get the whole thing in my middle.  Hopefully by that time I can get it below 35 which is what I have been shooting for.

It is tough to believe but I know a guy that towed a bob trailer, with his 9 month old child in it, up that road.  And, no he does not have a triple.  That feat just seems super human.

Hopefully my 11-28 cassette will show up this week. Then I can tackle that hill again to see what the difference is. But I probably shouldn't do the climb on Friday since I'm doing the Silicon Valley Olympic Distance Triathlon on Sunday...  ;D

We are planning on a hill packed road ride for this weekend that will cover BOOB. If we do that, I might suggest skipping the BOOB excursion on Friday evening. On the other hand, I'm quite interested in giving Kennedy Trail (http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2009/week5/) (fireroad riding) a spin if we do get out on Friday evening.

Not yet, but that's exactly what I had in mind! My parts showed up on Monday afternoon, so I just got in a 30 mile ride with some rollers (didn't want to do too much the day after a race!). And yesterday I took it relatively easy. I just rode 30 miles to/from Rancho San Antonio to run with the SV Tri Club. I may get out this evening, as there is a free time trial series on Canada Road that I've meaning to check out (it's a 10.4 mile race).

For now, I am in Santa Cruz waiting on my car to be done at the shop. Should be soon! Then I'm off to the beach for a swim. Looks like the overcast is going to lift just in time...  :)

On the brighter side, I did a rather hard ride today. So BOOB might have been heinous tomorrow! Perhaps I'll sub something else for it since it's not supposed to get super hot until Saturday.

Surprised myself with this time.  I felt slow.  Delbomber always sets a fast pace at the bottom, but we both backed off early today.  I was down in the granny gear much earlier than normal.  Had to spin this one out.  Having Mudworm on my wheel the whole time helped to push me.  Mudworm passed me for a bit, had to push hard to get the pass and the short lead.

No kidding. F4, you are gonna get rich!

I didn't find any change on my way. But I found the 280 overpass from Canada to Ralston, and it cuts my commute down to 1:37. Sweet. I should do this more often. Plus, it's a lot more relaxing than driving Mud's Trooper. I can't wait for that Cash For Clunkers to take effect.

Yah, the 280 overpass is nice. It gets you to Canada. Going home sucks cuz Ralston is a bit cramped. I should bike that way.

The Wildcat Variation is sustained steep, it came across a bit shorter.  It would be interesting to reverse the order to see how that goes.

If you know of anyone that would be interested in joining, even if it is for one lap, pass on an invite.

The three of us rode up to the stop sign at the bottom of BOOB. While we had our fingers on the start buttons ready to press, Delbomer on my left said, "guys, let's just take it slow and easy, okay?" and Mud on my right responded, "Okay." And Boon! Suddenly, the two of them sprinted away from me like two arrows leaving their bows. So much for taking it slow and easy.  :D

Fueco 41:43  PR - Escaped from the BOOB and did Bohlman.

I think I gave it an honest effort since I had one dry heave after topping out.

It was 104 degrees when I drove there. HOT! Mike, good job on riding all the way over in this heat.

Alison showed up, but then discovered that her gear cable was broken. She paid a bike shop to box her bike up when she flew back from the east coast. What a "fine" job they did!

Riding too and from wasn't all that bad. Actually the ride home was very nice. It had cooled off to 96 by the time I went past the bank just before 85 on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road.

Hopefully next time the temps won't be so hot. I think I can hang with you guys longer than 15 minutes!

I never did see Mr. Mud out there... I went up Highway 9 (43:57 -which is 2:17 slower than my PR) and Montevina Road (1st time! PR by default at 38:00 (from the "Icy" sign at the bottom to the downhill end of the wood fence by the gate at the top)... =)). I waited for about 15 minutes at the top of On Orbit to see if Erik would come up. No dice... Did talk to another guy named John up there. And I climbed Apollo Heights Court, which is nice little 300 yard (or so) climb right at the top on On Orbit.

Beautiful afternoon for a ride! I started to late to get BOOB in too...  >:D

5 Sept 2009 BOOB
MyNameisMud 39.45.61
Delbomber 45.38.76

Delbomber and Mud were out there.  Not fast but we rode.  Passed a Guy coming down, while on the upper part of Bohlman, and a Gal was on top when I finished.

The long hours at work have taken their toll and the times.  A sub 36 minute time seems very far away.

I may have seen Delbomber while I was going down Bohlman... I saw an Asian dude that looked vaguely familiar. I was wearing the San Jose Bike Club Jersey and taking the descent super slow.

Altogether, I saw four people going up while I was going down. Added to the guy that I talked to, there were a good number of people up there!

Today we took a baseline on the BOOB Low Key 2009 Variation (http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2009/week6/). I'm so glad that my friend Leah showed up. She took a wrong turn and ended up going up on Bohlman instead of On-Orbit. Delbomber and I are happy to find someone to join our "Always Lost" club. She seemed to have a great time, so I'm sure we'll see her again.

F'ueco, that was fast! A hard ride today. We are both pretty spent. Will post time later. Thanks for coming out to take pictures and the sag. Nice not to have to ride down that road when it's dark.

(Hey, don't delete any originals just yet even if they are blurry. I'll find a way to get them from you because I want to take a close look at our riding postures. I feel I'm not doing it right, but can't put my finger on a thing yet.)

8 Feb 2010
Time 2:15  about 25 miles
Rode to work.  The hills were beautiful with the early morning fog lifting out of the valley's.  Very little traffic for the first half of Alpine.  Nice temps over all.

The Magic Shine (bike light) worked very well.  Was fairly slow going up Alpine.  Had a full pack which is good for training but not for my times.

Delbomber, you can always just post your times here and we can fill it in for you. Anyhow, Mud says you were able to edit the spreadsheet at one point, but not any more. I don't know what changed. Your work address was used. Anyway, I just sent another invite to both your work address and home address (email that is). Let me know if it still does not work.

Rode Bohlman On Orbit Bohlman today after work.  43.20 to the top.  Was not as painful as I thought it would be.  Going down was much worse than I remember it being.  Seemed the end of last year we all were feeling fairly comfortable going down this thing.

Today, I kept wondering where my brakes were and the corners seemed sharper than I remember.

Now all I have to do is shave 9 minutes off of that time.  Winter is looking to be coming a bit to soon.

The hills drought is over...

I did Sierra 1.5 times on Wednesday (the top half twice).
Then we did Page Mill and Montebello on Saturday. So much fun! I think my time on Montebello was in the mid-45s.

Had hoped my new compact crank (and bb not packed with sand) would make a bigger difference. Perhaps the headwinds up top countered all the benefit. Yeah, that's it.

9.15.10 BOOB

 MtnStephen  43:43.57

PR by a long-shot, but only because I've only done it as part of longer rides before. Almost headed down after On-Orbit (was getting dark) but momentum carried me upwards, and then I could not turn back...

Friday anyone?  (if i get out of work in time)

Hmmmmm. Tempting. Very tempting. My legs and lungs are feeling weak and tired, perhaps they need some  BOOB.
I will probably not be able to get out of work until after 6 or 6:30 at the earliest, so it is iffy. I'll post here tomorrow if it looks like I can make it. What time were you thinking?

I pulled something in my back lifting (lowering, actually) a very heavy old Sun 24 inch wide-screen flat CRT at work last week. Did not ride for a week, and then was slower than molasses in February in Prudhoe Bay when i did get back on the bike. My legs felt like crap. Commute time was 8 (EIGHT!!) minutes slower than last week, and TEN minutes slower on the to-work leg. My back still hurts. The chain on quarter-of-a-century old steel-frame bike is so dirty that I can't hear myself think. Looks like I'll be going pretty slowly up BOOB this Friday. Or... is that all just a sad, pathetic attempt to sandbag the competition, lulling them into a false sense of superior climbing speed, only to be emotionally crushed when I attack on the upper reaches of On-Orbit?? (If i make it that far...)

Well? Which is the truth??? Only one way to find out! Show up Friday and RIDE!!!!

The return of Friday Night BOOBs. Meet at the church, ~6:00 PM Friday after wooooork. See you there!

So much for my sandbag tactics. Good thing I cleaned my chain, and mud rode his commute, otherwise it would not have been as entertaining. Another week, another (sorta) close battle, at least at times. Good one. And it was Greg's first BOOB, and he managed to to smile at the end, (_and_ he carried the weight of pwr bar bites for all up it!) although when I called it a "good hill" he had a slightly different interpretation.

Ya'll have fun next week, see ya the week after.

Was a fun ride.  MntStephen and Greg dropped me at the bottom of the hill.  Took an all out effort to Catch the MntStephen at the bottom of On Orbit.  The only thing keeping me going up On Orbit was knowing Stephen was behind me.  He pulled up along side and nearly passed on upper Bohlman.  I know the upper part well and that helped.  Plused I cursed him loudly.  :)

Good fun.  Was gased at the top.

Jeez....

I did the Wildcat Ridge variation of BOOB this afternoon. I forgot how much that thing hurts! It probably didn't help that I was doing hill repeats yesterday evening in Los Altos Hills (I HIGHLY recommend Quinhill Road for all you crazies!).

It was probably a little on the upside of 80 degrees, so a little warm. I had to stop a few times on the way up and ended up doing 57-something minutes in elapsed time. Horrible... But at least I'm getting back into climbing shape! I only have 8 weeks until The 508.

Thanks for pointing out Quinhill!
I'd been looking for a good spot for some hill intervals. I gave it a shot last week. It is a little shorter and a little steeper than what I think I need to work on right now, but definitely a good little hill for strength work. With lots of good flat warm-up/recovery opportunities around. Next time I need to warm up better and do a few more reps.
