Title: Katie's Doing Well at U.C.S.B.
Post by: Brad Young on November 09, 2013, 07:16:54 PM
Well the kid called tonight. She's doing well in college, and having fun.

We've had some communications since she started down there. She's texted us. This was the second phone call. A week ago she emailed us in response to an email from me (although it was not the first time for email, it hasn't happened often). In her response email she admitted:

"Yo Dad,
Thank you, I actually kinda sorta barely miss you guys too.
Im going down to LA this weekend so I'll be having plenty of fun!

Love,
Pip Squeak"

See those words? She MISSES us! Wow!

Tonight's call was pretty fun. My mom and my sister are up (aunt Sheila is Katie's "super cool" aunt), so we put her on the speaker phone. We talked about roommates and Thanksgiving and classes (only two of her three classes have both the big-class lectures and small-class labs/sections). The dorm food isn't as good where she is as it was where we stayed for orientation.

I asked her about the photo of her on Facebook in which the brown colored beverage bottle in her hand was mostly cut off by the edge of the photo. She claimed it was "root beer," and after I called her a "lying sack of dog meat," she started laughing and admitted she'd been drinking a bit now and then (but she seems to have a certain contempt for the kids who are overdoing that).

And I totally cracked myself up when we talked about her classes for next quarter. Did I go too far when she told us about the biology class she'll be taking called "Human Sexuality?" I can't believe it, but I asked my own damn daughter if that class has a lab.

Anyway, I'll post more in a month or so, or after we see her at Thanksgiving.

The report cracked me up. Good to hear that Katie is having a good time there so she only sorta barely misses you.

My nephew is with us this weekend. We made him Facetime (yeah, a verb now) his mother and his father. He was reluctant, but he had been talking in the room for quite a while now, so that's good. I wish I had some humorous interactions to report, but right now, I'm drawing a blank. He doesn't have a humorous aunt.

Over all, he is doing okay at school and received good feedback from the dorm staff. He is still speaking a lot of Chinese with his fellow dorm students. And sometimes, he struggles with very basic common English that we say to him. Tomorrow, when I take him to the gym and shopping, I plan to only speak English to him. Boy, you are in America now and had better get used to it!

the humorous part of talking with the nephew for me was when I asked about his history class.  He stated he could not talk about it since he did not understand anything since he just memorized the words for the answers.  That just seemed to much like a teenager putting off and adult.  We talked a bit more then he said he thought Peter the Great was uneducated.  Which is true to a point.

Katie has been working her butt off on an essay/midterm paper for her Poli-Sci class. It's going to be 45% of her grade in that class.

She asked us for comments last night. She sounded tired (and Vicki told her that that's how it goes in college). Eventually she sent us a copy of her work for some more input. Here's the subject line from her email (quoted verbatim):

Quote

Im quitting and becoming a stripper….

Ahem. Damn kids go off to college and they can't even punctuate...

So, your input is in punctuation?  ;D

Must be an awesome paper!

Yeah, it wasn't her plan to become a stripper that bothered me, it was the missing apostrophe in the "Im" in the subject line.

Does she know you're posting this?

Stripping superfluous punctuation from personal communications is the wave of the future!  I'm thinking commas, however.

She'll be home for the holidays this Friday evening (which means she'll be home for my birthday too). Looking forward to it.

Finals sounded hard for her, and she doesn't know her grades yet (but she did get an A- on an essay that will be 45% of her Political Science class grade; very impressive).

We did our annual, New Year's day measurement of the girls' height today. We use a level and a sharpie marker on the bedroom door.

Tricia grew a whopping 4 1/8 inches in 2013!

And, as if she needed it, Katie grew 3/4 inch.

She's heading back for quarter number two in a few days.

Continuing to do my job as dad, I sent Katie this educational email today under the title: "The Dangers of Being Hip:"

Some of us aren't particularly hip, "with it," or up to date. Others? Well, there are those who define "cool." Among other things, the cool ones have all the latest hot stuff. But hot stuff comes with risks. Such as this danger: [from a hot, hot hipster with all the right gadgets]:

"I was in a Starbucks Coffee recently when my stomach started rumbling and I realized that I desperately needed to fart. The place was packed but the music was really loud so to get relief and reduce embarrassment I timed my farts to the beat of the music. After a couple of songs I started to feel much better. I finished my coffee and noticed that everyone was staring at me. Suddenly I remembered that I was listening to my Ipod (with ear buds)…."

No, but I thanked her for the Tiger slippers.

(The cross and the grey color mean that it is a German tank from World War Two. The make-up of the road wheels and, especially, the exhaust guards - at the back of the tank - clearly mark it as a Tiger I; the Germans called it the Panzer VIa.)

The VIa didn't keep them from losing at Kursk.

I'm shocked. I'm so pleased that my head is swimming. I just got off the phone with Katie, a phone call that culminates a fun last two weeks for her, and a great set of developments as I look at it.

Those who read my PCT trip reports may recall these words from the last day of our nine day trip last summer:

Quote

We then came to a trail junction at the Bear Ridge Trail where we were to leave the PCT for this trip. Well, at least two of us were to leave the trail for this trip; the third, Katie, was to leave it and not come back.

Katie's interest in these hikes has been declining for a long time. At first I didn't listen to her on this subject, I probably didn't want to hear what she was saying. Time's gone by, she's older and her interests have been changing. Although she likes climbing and hiking, she seems to like them more when she's doing them with other people. This will likely change in a few years or in several (or maybe it won't at all). I suspect that in time she'll be OK hanging out some with dad again. But for now she wants to do other things, and especially, she wants to do things with other people.

We talked about all this before this trip and also while we were on it. Katie made it plain that this was the last PCT trip she wanted to go on (at least for the foreseeable future). At first this decision was tough on me; for years it's been three of us and the thought of Katie not being part of this dream (really, my dream) was difficult. But it's also not ultimately my decision, it's hers. And so it was made: this trip, and now, on day nine, this trail junction, was the last Katie would do with us on this fantastic trail.

I'd had nine days to think about this issue. And nine days helped a lot. By this point on the trail I was OK with Katie's decision and with continuing the trail with just two of us. In fact I think this hike, and this whole issue, were critical in me letting go of Katie in a greater sense.

Katie turns 18 in two weeks, she leaves for university in six. During this trip I really came to realize that I am done. Or at least I genuinely feel like I am done. I feel like I've given her every bit of knowledge that I have to give her. By the end of this trip I'd actually come to feel like she's raised and ready for the world. I'm ready to move from being the father of a girl to being the father of a woman. It was and is a good feeling.

And so, at PCT trail mile 874.5 we posed for pictures, we walked our customary extra feet (to make sure there's overlap and that we haven't missed a step - even though Katie's not coming back) and then we all three turned left on the Bear Ridge Trail and headed down to end the trip.

Those were heartfelt words then. I knew it was time for Katie to be able to decide what and where she wanted to do outdoor-type stuff. I knew it was time for me to let go. I knew that she might (and half expected that she would) stop climbing and hiking altogether. I'd accepted that.

Well she's doing well and having a ball down there in Santa Barbara. Friends of ours who were passing through Santa Barbara took her to lunch; their follow-up descriptions to us used the word "thriving" several times. Among the fun things Katie's been up to is involving herself in U.C.S.B.'s "Excursion Club." One of the first things she did with them was sea kayaking.

Two weeks ago she told us she was going on a hike with this club. "Cool" I thought, "maybe she's not totally fried on hiking after all." And it turned out that that hike - on an old and hard-to-follow Forest Service trail in the Santa Ynez mountains, was a tough, tough hike. It included some class three on Cathedral Peak (the one down there), and an after-dark finish. The word we got back from her was that she loved it and she really liked her fellow Excursion Club members.

Then, the next day we heard back that the club leaders had asked her if she might be (as a freshman) interested in being a club leader (a staff member). She seemed thrilled by this.

So, today she texted Vicki and followed up with a phone call. Apparently she was asked to give the club a resume of her outdoor experience. Among other activities, she described her years of PCT hiking. She forwarded the resulting text-message exchange between her and the club president to Vicki. Here's what it said (posted with Katie's permission, although she thinks I'm weird):

Quote

2/20/14!

“Text I got from Excursion Club president [smiley/grin face]:!

! “”lol we are all in disbelief about 850 of the pct…!
! Clear your schedule for Monday at 8pm””!

! ! “”Haha yeah, I’m doing more this summer:). OK, what am I going to?””!

! “”Your first staff meeting :)””!

Notice that last part about doing more PCT this summer? (We'll believe it if we see it, but she's always welcome; she knows that.)

The follow-up phone call was to see if we could send down her backpack, a headlamp, a sleeping pad, you know, EVERYTHING she needs. (And, oh, while we're at it, can we send down her share of the girl scout cookies that Tricia is selling - Katie definitely still has her appetite.)

This is cool. This is great. My girl seems to still love this stuff. She's good at it, and she's proud that other people recognize that she's good at it.

One backpack, on the way, pronto...

The foreshadowing in this story was obvious, but the conclusion really quite nice. :)

I got tons of time off. What do you want on a resupply?
Title: Re: Katie's Doing Well at U.C.S.B.
Post by: Brad Young on February 21, 2014, 07:13:13 AM
I don't think we'll need a resupply this year, but we'd love to have your company on one of our hikes. Here's roughly how they'll go:

1.  Late July, Tuolumne Meadows to Sonora Pass, 76 miles, seven days (allowing an extra day for peak-bagging - also, since this is one of the very, very best parts of the PCT, I'm saving it for only me and the girls; this is the trip Katie is likely to go on);

2. First half of August, Sonora Pass to Highway 4, 31.6 miles, two days (or maybe three if a friend or friends join us);

3. First half of August, Highway 4 to Highway 88, 28.8 miles, two or three days;

4. First half of August, Highway 88 to Highway 50, 14.3 miles, one day;

5. August or September, Desolation Wilderness, meaning Highway 50 to Forest Road 3, 32.3 miles, two or three days;

6. September, continuing to Highway 80, past Donner Pass, 32.0 miles, two or three days.

It seems strange how short some of the "highway to highway" legs are! Anyway, we'd love company on some of these. I know Vicki is going to backpack one of these legs with us, and the Dawsons at least one. "Uncle Rob" would be a big bonus.

Another idea, if you are interested would be to hike in a full day (maybe with a very light re-supply) south from Sonora Pass and meet us for our last night out on that trip?

I am really looking forward to this summer.

We are back in school again by August but I might be able to hel out with a resupply up on Ebbetts if works out around the weekend.  There are usually Trail Angles hanging out up there during most of the summer.

Hmmm, James did say he wants to try backpacking.

I can imagine his version means wearing no pack and walking a mile.....flat, no hills.

Then again, with Tricia there, he'll get distracted (hopefully) and knock out 10miles.

the 108 to 4 sounds nice.

Well sh#t, this just keeps getting better.

Here's an email from Katie today (as with anything of hers I post, it's posted with her explicit permission; and, as with anything of hers that I post, she thinks I am weird):

Quote

So Im in the processes of making plans for spring break and it looks like 2 or 3 friends and I want to do a road trip and spend 3-5 days in Joshua Tree. If we did that could you bring down the extra tent, sleeping bags, etc for me to use? And we could meet up 2 or 3 of the days and climb with you guys. No solid plans yet but I have a feeling thats what we'll be doing but it would also depend on if you could bring some of the extra gear.

Love,
Katie

Well, Katie did join us in Joshua Tree for Spring break. We got back late last night (to snow here) after seven great days of climbing with her and her friend Andres, and with a bunch of other friends as well.

It seems like this is as good a thread as any to post a few of our photos.

Mornings were social and slow (in the first photo the woman on the left is our friend Whitney Reynier):

We had one windy day and otherwise brilliant weather (conducive to evening climbs, like Hands Off right above our camp in Hidden Valley Campground):

Katie's friend Andres turned out to be a very nice young man. He's a theoretical physics junior at U.C. San Diego (and he really, really has a passion for the science!). He was friendly to all, a real gentleman. He treated Tricia like a little sister, tried and loved climbing, and fit in with the group quite well. None of us could tell if they were a "couple," but that's their business, not ours. We were actually quite pleased to have our daughter associating with a person of this caliber:

Meanwhile Tricia got to wander all of the rocks of Hidden Valley Campground:

She also climbed like a fiend, including a follow on this crack that was hand and fist to most of us (and fist and offwidth to her):

With the crew in the foreground:

As always we "pre-cleaned" the dishes to save water:

And, due to a significant rain three weeks ago, the flowers were out in the desert:

The best parts of the trip were family, friends, and the weather. My personal highlight was getting nearly 40 new routes done in one week, including redpointing two routes that I'd previously fallen on (one very tricky 5.10b or - given Joshua Tree ratings - 5.10c, and one that was originally rated 5.10d, but which everyone seems to think is harder now).

Home now and enjoying a rest day.

Good eye Dennis! They are slightly too big, and the leather is worn through in a few places. That's because they are old, used shoes; I refuse to buy new shoes for a kid that grew more than four inches last year and seems on track to do so this year again. We did just buy her a new harness though.

But "T Girl" also just has big feet - big that is for her current height. Katie may be correct in speculating that Tricia will eventually be the taller sister.

We thought about you guys camping as we drove up 395 to our motel in 70 mph gusts Wednesday.
CHP was turning away campers and high profile vehicles.
We had a comfy bed, hot shower, fridge, microwave and TV each night after cragging - but alas no other compadres.

Love that picture of Tricia. She is not allowed to grow up by the way - I like her just the way she is damnit!

You put me to shame numbers-wise but we did some cool routes (9 onsights and one "bite") - including our longest ever at the Hills - 175 feet of thrills, joy and satisfaction on a brand new route - Peanut Butter and Chocolate 5.9***(shows at 5.8+ on mtn proj) and that's my star rating - also quite "sporty" with only 9 bolts!

By the way - who is that poser in the orange shirt?

That "poser" is Brian, who, I think you must have climbed with up here. And, said poser is moving to Santa Cruz in April with his girlfriend Whitney Reynier (yes, that's her name, sound it out). He wore that orange shirt all week (I started calling him "traffic cone Hamilton" - thanks for that one Rachel).

Oh and he redpointed a bad-ass 5.10b J Tree crack that spits off lots of lesser climbers (Fisticuffs, it's often a bloody meat-fest from hands to wide fists), and later that same day onsighted his first 5.11a crack lead (Heart of Darkness).

Orange shirts. You're in good company.

Yep - knew that - and knew that. I saw Brian at PG (yes, PG) some months back and did some routes in there with him. Only time I did anything there but boulder by myself. He was crankin' on some stuff that blew me away. Those are some damn impressive leads - and nice job on ticking those 10's that had bitten you previously. Forgot to mention that looked like a helluva bfast spread in your pics!

Love that picture of Tricia. She is not allowed to grow up by the way - I like her just the way she is dammit!

I so agree with you. And yet, like Katie, Tricia is growing up, and I can't do anything but stand aside with wonder at the person she's becoming.

And tomorrow she turns 12 years old (yep, April 1st, no fooling).

Well, Katie's now been tear-gassed  ::)

Here's the event:

Quote

Police were forced to tear gas a rioting crowd at a spring break party near the University of California Santa Barbara that turned violent

A spring break party near the University of California, Santa Barbara descended into violence Saturday as police showered crowds with tear gas.

More than 100 people were arrested throughout the course of the day and evening, and at least 44 people were hospitalized, CBS reports. The police deployed “chemical agents and less lethal foam projectiles” in order “to disperse the crowds,” according to a statement.

Luckily, she was only walking to a friend's house when she got a slight whiff of the gas as it drifted on the wind (and, actually, yes, I do believe her).

Well, I'm smiling about as loudly as I can smile   ;D  ;D

Sit down. Wait for it.

Katie's now committed to go on our first, seven day, 2014 PCT leg with us. From Tuolumne Meadows to Sonora Pass. I mean committed too, as in "yes, I'll do that section with you and Tricia."

Now we all know that things can happen (I could break an ankle, lots of things might interfere). But what a great start.

Although this seven day trip is reserved for me and the girls, are any of you Mudders interested in one of the three day sections with us? We'll be cramming several three day backpacks into the first three weeks of August, and company (at least Mudder-type company) would be fun to have along. (And actually, given the milage involved on those legs, most of these would have been two day hikes, but we plan on reducing milage if anyone else does join us - not everyone is a hiking animal.)

Yes. subject to some fine tuning on the dates (from upthread):

1.  Late July, Tuolumne Meadows to Sonora Pass, 76 miles, seven days (allowing an extra day for peak-bagging - also, since this is one of the very, very best parts of the PCT, I'm saving it for only me and the girls; this is the trip Katie is likely to go on);

2. First half of August, Sonora Pass to Highway 4, 31.6 miles, two days (or maybe three if a friend or friends join us);

3. First half of August, Highway 4 to Highway 88, 28.8 miles, two or three days;

4. First half of August, Highway 88 to Highway 50, 14.3 miles, one day;

5. August or September, Desolation Wilderness, meaning Highway 50 to Forest Road 3, 32.3 miles, two or three days;

6. September, continuing to Highway 80, past Donner Pass, 32.0 miles, two or three days.

Still a bit surprised by the number of emails and calls by concerned friends who'd heard of the shooting.

I so much agree with the dad who's son was killed - damn close to posting some "f&#k you" posts to the right wing/gun nut/dipshit types on Supertopo (I know the phrase I used is repetitively redundant). Think I'll just keep it less angry here instead.

How crushed and devastated a parent must be when they have to bury a child. Although I almost can't imagine it, U.C.S.B. parents are going through it right now because of (yet another) mentally ill young man with way-too easy access to a quick and easy way to kill.

I have stated many times, yes the Constitution guarantees the right to own firearms, However, the Constitution does not guarantee the right for idiots to own firearms.

Growing up in the country with loaded firearms in the house the rules governing firearms were very strict and enforced with an iron fist.  I fired off a ridiculous number of lead growing up.  I just see them as a tool to be used and their purpose is pretty damn narrow.  When I see folks holding them out there and fawning over them like some hot woman I always get this weird uncomfortable feeling.  I think there should be strict rules around owning a firearm but then that is how I was brought up around them.

To much crazy shooting going on out there.

A good day is when Katie comes home for a visit.

A great day is when she asks if I can take the afternoon off work to go hiking with her.

A terrific day is when she suggests the top of Cooper Peak as our hiking destination (it's on the north edge of the Emigrant Wilderness, and the views today were at least 60 miles).

An unbelievably fantastic day is when we get to take both dogs and it's Halifax's first Sierra summit:

After a weather delay, I'm off to Red Rocks this afternoon. By way of U.C.S.B.

I get to spend tomorrow hanging out with my oh-so-cool college girl. And, as I hear it on the phone, she's really looking forward to it (and, naturally, I am too).

Katie's still involved with the Excursion Club (of course). She's still a staff member for the club, leading trips. I'll get to see the Excursion House and meet a bunch of her friends (although I've already met her friend Katie; the friend who is mentioned below).

But that's not the question for this post. The question for this post is: should I tell Katie that her mother specifically violated her instructions?

What instructions you ask?  :D  ;D

These instructions (the photos below are from Vicki and Katie's text message exchange; they are cropped - in one case seriously cropped - since this is a family site). First photo:

That's the last straw. Your knowledge of popular culture (rock, movies, all of it) from "our" generation is equal to that of any two others of us. I hereby appoint you our official cultural attaché.

J.C.: Boltalholic, Master of Mud, Traffic Cone and, now, The Master's cultural attaché.

Impressive.

Life can't get any better than this.

We had a nice dinner with all four chairs filled.

It's colder than a witch's broomstick out there and warm in here from two wood stoves.

Christmas carols playing, the girls just got the Christmas stuff down and are setting up and decorating the tree. Bantering back and forth.

(Favorite line so far, from Katie regarding a dispute about how to set up the tree: "Tricia, I've been doing this sh#t a lot longer than you").

Well I'll be. It looks like Katie has time for a short trip with Dad! She and I and the dogs, plus maybe some of her Excursion Club friends. We'll backpack three days in the San Rafael Wilderness, just over an hour from campus.

I love that area. It's the same place where Vicki and I got engaged 192 years ago. And I love this kid.

Katie and I had a fine, fine three day trip in great weather. We got a few nice photos, including this "selfie:"

Hiking up Manzana Canyon:

It didn't take very long until we saw one of these:

We gave him plenty of time to finish his trail crossing before we resumed our hike:

Manzana Creek always has wonderful pools:

Fun shots. That pool looks really inviting - especially with the hot temps today - and the snake looks BIG! Glad you guys had fun. It's been unusually hot by the coast today and looks like the Pinns high was nearing 100! I thought about trying to head down and get a few bolts replaced. Not to be. Took a sweltering uni ride instead and got a few brief interludes of cool ocean air each time I turned toward the sea...storm's comin' in...

Thanks J.C. On my drive home yesterday the temps near the ocean were in the 90s! And here at home today, Vicki had all the doors and windows open. A storm is coming, but late spring is too!

Katie and I day-hiked the next day into and then down White Ledge Canyon almost to the Sisquoc River:

Flowers were everywhere:

And, again; this time our youngest dog Halifax was charging up the trail and ran directly over this shortly before I came upon it - and then I had to work (from a distance) to get it to move off the trail:

Camp chores:

And, finally, what I think Katie actually went on the trip for: dogs; I think there are times when they worship her  ;D

I was pretty bummed that Katie couldn't join us at all on the PCT this summer. She did he own fantastic trip to Malaysia and Thailand (and is still blogging about it). But it didn't leave any time for trips with us.

We partially made up for it though with a father/daughter backpack into the Emigrant Wilderness these last few days (U.C.S.B. doesn't start until late this month). It actually felt a little odd to be hiking without Tricia at first, but then we settled in to a great routine and I remembered how well I like this wonderful daughter too:

There was a new dusting of snow as we got started (it is, after all, almost Pinnacles season already):

Three miles into the back country, proving that one has to mind one's manners no matter where they are, we ran into this character (most of you will not know who it is, but Rob certainly will - he's a climbing friend who lives one mile from us):

I realized on this trip what  tough life I really have. It seems that every time I "do stuff" (backpacking in this case), I want to do more of it. We got back and all I could think about was how to get back into the Emigrant before the snow flies. And then I went climbing today (and I can't wait to get up there to redpoint this one route).

Tough life.

I'm at Katie's house now, packing for a three day backpack in the San Rafael Wilderness starting tomorrow. She looks great. I can't believe she's already in the second week of the last quarter of her senior year.

I shuttle drove for the Dawson's on Sunday; After I drove around, I hiked out to and then along the PCT to join them at Whitewater River (the whole area they're in now is due west of Joshua Tree, starting at about a 45 minute drive from Hidden Valley Campground). Some of my fondest PCT hiking with both daughters was in that area, basically the second half of this trip:

http://www.mudncrud.com/forums/index.php?topic=1059.0

We then climbed at Joshua Tree for two days (Laura and I got totally shut down on a "5.10a" face; Steve's shoulder hurt and he didn't try to climb anything that hard).

More shuttle driving followed; Dawson's are right now on day two of a three day backpack designed to take them from the desert east of the San Gorgonio massif up onto it and then to Big Bear Lake. I hiked in with them part of the way yesterday.

Tonight is the Excursion Club slideshow. As requested, it consists of about 100 of my best climbing slides. I snuck in about 30 of my favorite Katie photos too, and a few of a daughter of our good friends the Klatts; she's not only here at U.C.S.B., but is now an Excursion leader too. "They" say that turnout will be big. It's interesting though; in spite of rumors that some Excursion kids will join the backpack, no-one's committed. Katie says that that's normal; kids rarely commit to any adventure (especially for the weekend) until the last second.

How old were you when the video was made?

(Speaking of sleeping, I'm hanging out right now, having had breakfast and coffee an hour ago, waiting for the college kids to wake up so we can get going.)

I started in Akron at the local sledding hill at around the same age (14).

The original boards were pretty flimsy and if you weren't careful you could snap one by pulling up on the leash too hard.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3cmtZRLvOutvENq1uvlt0K6KgeP0SANk9BlmjyeVVEFQyTqGvJQLxa7XcR44J26bE4Rxm3Nwf_C4EnGDJHOq-HdoQV1cOQ2He1R4l_haGfpV1qlYkUrzfHxSC0gWa25oPueAVLtv5Fufa_aHJV0NsNx=w1006-h396-no?authuser=0)

I can't believe they are making them again. https://www.snurferboards.com/

When I moved to KY at 16 we couldn't find any snurfers at the stores so we bought some cheap water skis and modified those. Eventually Burton came out with something similar that had two metal runners, rubber straps for your feet and a leash. I wish I still had that old board - it would be a collector's item now. I still have my plastic Sims board.

Reminds me of the jumping shoes that came out when we were kids in the '60s. A top plate and a bottom plate connected by springs. They strapped to your shoes and let you jump high (spring-assisted). No support of any kind though, so any slight off-angle landing would twist them off your shoes and twist the crap out of your ankle too.

Unlike "snurfs," the kiddie jumping things did not go further.

Another fun three-day loop trip with Katie and one of her Excursion friends (Emma). We had great weather and no rattlesnakes (about time on that second one).

At the trailhead:

We quickly saw our good luck horned toad (a huge one!):

This trip we hiked up one of the very few (only?) trails that I hadn't hiked in the San Rafael Wilderness; going up Lost Canyon Trail led us to the east end of Hurricane Deck and a great first night's bivy spot (up high on a ridge, so we had to carry lots of water the last four miles):

Katie labeled that last shot "Sponsored by Salsas Awesome Hats" (those are both Vicki-made hats of course).

We got very early morning light at our perch:

The morning's first four miles led east to the end of the Hurricane Deck Trail (the first mile hadn't been brushed in years, the rest of this hike was on a good, fairly clear path):

Looks like you guys had a fun and peaceful outing.
The change from horizontal to tilted strata in the fourth picture may be a fault (unless there is some type of optical illusion). The tilt is really obvious in the 7th picture at your perch. Not sure if that is a local or regional feature since the Coast Ranges have so much variety. Most of the rocks appear to be a fairly clean-looking sandstone (quartz rich). Most likely old seafloor pushed up along faults over millions of years.   I'm in geological mode sitting here proctoring an exam.

I'm curious what you mean by "local or regional" features.

The Hurricane Deck is about 20 miles long, oriented east-west (see it in photos five and last). The really obvious strata in the fourth photo are part of the Hurricane Deck (in particular, that fourth photo shows an area which is called on maps "East Deck").

In turn, the Hurricane Deck is part of a sub-range which is part of the east-west oriented Santa Ynez Mountains.

Is this all regional or local?

(And by the way, are you proud that - based on your training of me/complaining to me - I did not say that the deck "runs" east-west.)

Here are two more photos of the Hurricane Deck. These are taken from the southeast (on a 2013 trip with Tricia).

The heavy, obvious strata from this trip report's fourth photo are at/just off the right edge of the first photo, and can be seen in the second photo:

No. It's really soft sandstone. And quite flakey in many places.

It's all relative and scale related. Local is usually associated with smaller scale and regional with larger scale.
It sounds like in this case we could say that the Hurricane Deck and the sub range are local features within the Santa Ynez Mtns (regional). The Santa Ynez Mtns would be local relative to the Coast Ranges (regional).

If all the layers of rock were tilted that same direction and angle in all of the sub ranges within the Coast Ranges then that would be a regional attitude. If not it would be considered local. I bet the UC Santa Barbara geology field classes hike out to measure the strike and dip (attitude) of those strata and plot it on maps.

And yes...I am proud.

I'm curious if you can post that map in a slightly larger version?

As near as I can tell, the purple band represents the highest reaches of the San Rafael Wilderness (Mount McKinley, San Rafael Peak and the Mission Pine area). Is that a different type of rock (the colors show different types of rock, right)?

I just did a quick search and that one came up in images, so the resolution is really low.
That slice is pretty small scale. You'd have to try and figure out which quadrangle you were in and then search that.
The beauty is the USGS has a lot of maps out there as open file pdf's that are really high resolution.
Here is one I found for the coastal plain in that area. You can zoom in to your heart's content.
https://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3001/downloads/pdf/SIM3001map.pdf

It looks like many of the maps for that area may only be available in hard copy. They were made by Dibblee. He was a mapping maniac BITD. A legend of geologic mapping  :yesnod:
This website recommends doing more searches since the site is in archives.
https://geomaps.wr.usgs.gov/archive/socal/maps/santa_barbara/index.html

That image I posted did not include the legend, so I don't know what rock type that is but you are correct - each color corresponds to a different rock type. The geology around there looks really interesting. It is no wonder Tanya Atwater spent her career at UCSB. I met her on the west side of Pinnacles a couple years ago. She is retired now but was a major player in the development of Plate Tectonics theory.

The easiest way for me to determine what is where on that map is by Lake Cachuma (one drives right by it on the way to the usual trailheads). My recollection is that there's a fair amount of granite in the higher reaches of the area (at least I'm fairly sure it's granite - I haven't studied it but it looked and felt that way). I was wondering whether the purple on the map was granitic rock (maybe older rock - country rock if I'm using that phrase correctly - that was uplifted along with everything else nearby).

And, although I've never mentioned this to you, I did take general education level geology while at U.C.S.B. I especially enjoyed the field study portions of the class. I have no memory of who my professor was though (but if she's retired now, it may well have been professor Atwater).

Nice. If there is granitic rock in the area it is likely intrusive rock that migrated up into the sedimentary country rock.
Continued uplift along with weathering and erosion uncovered it.
I'll see if I can figure it out when I get some more time

So which would be the older rock (if the rock up high is granite), the granite or the sandstone(s)?

Haven't been able to excavate any files. I found some references to the quads but they are only available at the libraries - UCSC and Stanford.

I will guess that the red on that map is granitic and the purple is probably metamorphic. The state geologic map uses those conventions.
They use pink for volcanic, red for plutonic, blue, green and purple for metamorphic. Unfortunately there are no standard colors for geologic maps.

The country rock is always older. It had to be there first in order for the granite to intrude.
The sedimentary rocks would also typically be much softer than the granite and so they would wear away quicker leaving the granite sticking up.

Back 15 years ago and longer I used to "prove" to Katie that I was her superior (and thus correct about everything) by reminding her that "I'd led Feed the Beast" (the 5.11c route at Pinns). The usual response was a groan (for the uninitiated, reference paragraph 4.7.3 of Section II of The Father's Instruction Manual).

Nowadays her backpacking guide job is going very, very well. She's great as a guide. As an example, on a recent trip she had a guy in his 50s who was struggling. She quietly started slipping weight from his pack into hers. Some of her work has also involved what they call "portering," which is exactly what it sounds like. She carries a 100 liter pack when she porters. One hundred liters!

And, as we continue to learn, apparently, a university education made her clever.

Here's part of the text exchange I just had with her:
