What are folks thoughts?
-
Are there any routes that stay dry in the rain that are worth the drive?
-
Not really.
Most need a day or so to dry.
Many are watercourses after a good rain.
Hoping JC goes tomorrow and reports back.
-
Tons to climb with little dry time. Our rule of thumb was if the blacktop was drying, the rock was climbable, which happens pretty quickly. West side gets mossy, High Peaks and Eastside are better.
Geez, if l would have followed the above sentiment in wet winters of my youth(before global warming), I would have ended up being a surfer or skier, instead of a climber. This Is Pinnacles season!
-
Just do FAs, then its not an issue if something breaks.
-
Hrmmm, forecast calls for rain Saturday.
Well, that’s for Sunnyvale.
West side stays a bit damp. Balconies, if enough rain, the water chutes flow woth water.
Was hoping JC goes today and can report back.
-
JC and KC were originally planning to be climbing in the Hills today. However, cold and snow sent us home. No Pinns today - going to enjoy a nice vegan Thanksgiving Dinner. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
-
I took a peek north of KC this morning. Chalone Peak was shrouded and it looked like it was combing rain out of all passing clouds.
-
Thanks Waldo!
So much for a drying out period.
Same deal with Castle Rock...shrouded in clouds all day.
-
We thought about going out this morning but with a forecast high of 50, partial sun and a major storm moving in, I couldn't get motivated. I was hoping maybe clink could get out but that got torpedoed. Not to mention I probably would have been relegated to Discovery Wall with every other Black Friday Bozo. So not happening.
The park's rain gauge tipped again early this morning with a temp of 34, cementing my decision.
I'm sure Brad will be there putting up 15 new routes.
Time for leftovers, a beach walk, some of my favorite westerns and the best company on Earth.

Wrongo.
Leisurely morning here, down south. Then we're going to the Getty for the rest of the day (hoping that most others down here are going to shop so we son't have crowds).
A little concerned about snow levels and temps at home though. Heading back tomorrow so as to have Sunday to clean up and get ready for the week.
-
Skyline was....WET!!!
So much for a dry day.
Squiddo tried to get me killed again, but not this time!!!
-
It has definitely been wet here at the park the last few days, and it looks like there will be some significant new rainfall today, tonight, tomorrow... And at least some chance of rain all the way through the extended forecast. It has also been cold (for Pinnacles), with lows near freezing and highs in the 50s. Definitely not ideal climbing conditions - despite an influx of a lot of visitors at the park yesterday, I did not see any climbers at the usual haunts in Bear Gulch.
I hiked up to North Chalone Peak yesterday, and there was still some snow near the summit, and atop South Chalone Peak. While I was up there (doing some condor monitoring work), I got snowed on a couple of times too! The weather was dynamic, and there were some beautiful rainbows as well as breaks in the clouds throwing dramatic shafts of light on the peaks.
We really need the rain, but I don't think conditions will be great here for climbing for some time!
-
^^^
That would have been a great hike to do on a cold day.
I thought about it but thoughts don't get you off the couch and in the car.
Sounds like numb-finger climbing with no company would have been possible at Discovery.
Thanks for the update and mental imagery.
-
Some skulls are numb way before fingers.
-
An old friend and partner is recovering from hip replacement surgery. He wanted to get out yesterday so we went to the West Side, walked (slowly!) to the Shepherd and down a bit past the practice rock. The change rain brings always stuns me. Rock that was dry and beckoning a few days ago is dripping water and covered with moss. I got six inches off the ground on the practice rock and that was as far as I wanted to go - older joints, you know. It was indeed cold, but gorgeous! Condors circled above Machete.
-
The best climb at the monument in this weather is the Machete Arch traverse.
Heck of a drive for a traverse.

Still beats driving to Gold Dust

Surprised and impressed that you know about that.

Yes, once upon a time

We got home to 15 inches of snow and a 30 inch berm.
At least the electricity is on.

Burn some now to avoid everything burning in the summer:

Nice!! I hope there was beer involved.

It's been dry for a couple days at Pinns with just a little sun and some righteous wind gusts yesterday - the gauge registered 49 mph at 12:30pm and 48 at 2:30pm.
I hear the call and I must answer soon or lose what little bit is left of my mind.
Forecast is 80% today and 60% tomorrow but then it looks clear for the week with temps coming up into the upper 50's or low 60's.
-
Oddly it did not rain at all at Pinns yesterday. I have been there on 60% days with no rain and 20% days where it was actively raining and shut down our hopes of climbing. With an 80% chance, I did not even consider going yesterday - go figure.
What's the take home point? Meteorology is one of the most inaccurate predictive sciences on the planet. Now multiply that by several orders of magnitude and you have climate science (not taking into account anthropogenic effects or politics). Want to take a trip to the final frontier? Become a predictive seismologist, glacialogist or quantum physicist. Most or all of the subjects addressed by these disciplines (and many more) will be debated ad infinitum. Enough digressing.
It rained a bit last night and is supposed to clear for the week starting some time today.
It's been pouring here and I'll give you one guess where Kat is.
That's right...she is out for a run at the beach path with her friend Carol.

Well?? What do ya’ll think about this weekend?
Que the peanut gallery.

I don't eat peanuts.
I like carrots.
Frosty the snowman mornings with abominably low daytime temps and a slight chance of glittering sprinkles on Sunday morning

Hmm
Peanuts and carrots are good for you.

Cousins, right?

Soquel demo forest was dang cold yesterday.
I gave a bit back to Santa Cruz....relieved on the SC side...

So quell demo forest was dang cold yesterday.
I imagine so.
Geeked out at Star Wars with clink and his clan today.
There was actually a brief climbing scene

Nice, the entire clan came off the reservation?

Just about.
Friends and neighbors too

Insane amounts of rain falling at Pinns.
Half an inch in the last 3 hours!
-

Nice. It's clear and cold here...

Seriously dumping here on the coast with some hail and the forecast says it is headed to Pinns.
Just in time to ruin our Inn at Pinnacles weekend for the 3rd year in a row.
Time for the Seinfield impersonation again - REALLY?
-
Grashoppper, always book 1st weekend in Feb.
I know, u want to go to the High Peaks 1more time.
January is a crap shoot.
I believe it’s due to Mungos birthday= snow for his sledding.
Just a conspiracy theory.
Once he sells the sled, it will never rain at the Pinnacles again.

Made me look at the radar picture on weather.com.
Wow, yeah, that's a lot of yellow!
-
It's raining down there now. Park gauge went from 7.03 to 7.20 in an hour and if it's coming down there like it is here...
sheesh...better take a raft or a canoe.

He should sell that snow hog immediately.
If you want conspiracy theory I'll go with Angels Don't Play This HAARP.
Craig and I were commenting on the con trails in the sky yesterday as we hiked down Condor Gulch.
Put on your tin foil hat, adjust your respirator and keep that water filter handy.
Get that bunker finished so you can stock it with with ammo and survival rations

How weird. I've now noticed for the second time that National Weather Service doesn't measure snow. At least not quickly, like it measures rain.
We've got eight inches of snow outside and NWS says zero precipitation here for all of today, January 16th.
-

I was going to say you probably have between 8 and 9 inches of snow based on the rain that fell at Pinns.
-
We have snow on the hills, lower hills.
Pinnalces must have had a dusting.

Alright, new designation addition. He's now not only our cultural attache, he's our resident Pinnacles geometerorologist ::)

Snow in the Santa Cruz mountains and Mt Hamilton this morning.
-
But is the top of Mt. Hamilton yellow?
-
???
-
I was out on the West Side this morning. There was a bit of snow on the NW side of Chalone Peak. Son Jon and I walked down and up the Jawbone Canyon trail. It was chilly and wet, but otherwise beautiful! Streams were flowing. We conversed with JC and Kathy at the Visitors Center. They were off to have a whack at the graffiti. Power to their hammer!
-
F4, you didn't do your homework. Watch the Zappa video, they read the tall kids post. Then read mine.
I bet Pinnacles is beautiful this weekend.

It’s a silly place.

The Incriminated Crowd
Speaking of "Dry this weekend?", the Sleeping Incontinence Crowd should check their Depends, before breakfast.
Don't forget to wash your hands.
:)

Depends crowd....10am start I can guess

Yep. Laugh it up you two - your day is coming :yesnod: :out: :prrr:
That humor is pretty dry
We got a few new routes done this weekend - even with starts between 9:30 and 10:00.
There was no big rush with the gloomy weather - almost no sun and cool temps.
A good time was had by all.
-
After two hours of “was that a raindrop,” I was 150 yards from the car when it started to rain at 2:00. By the time we got to Soledad things were pretty wet.

So much for the NWS predictions, since there was no rain forecast today.
I talked to clink this am and he said it was already raining in Monterey.
Glad we opted out.

So you got soaked and almost had a heart attack?
-
I’m a lawyer, I don’t have a heart ;D
No, just a little damp.
