Couple of Sponge questions
« on: January 12, 2012, 07:23:08 AM »
Hi gang-

How long do you think it takes to hike to that area from East Side Visitor Center?

Does the 95' on page 215 refer only to route 536?  60 meter rope sufficient to TR 535?

What is the base like?  Room to hang out?

On a holiday weekend, it seems far enough off the beaten track to be fairly quiet.  The lead is easy enough for me to set a top rope for our little group of 3 to play on for a while.

Looks like there's other fun stuff nearby as well.

Thanks for your help!

I have no idea how long to do the hike. My wife doesn't let me make those estimates anymore since I "always estimate way too low." But it's only about 2 1/2 miles from the Visitor's Center (I'd hike via Condor Gulch Trail).

The 95 feet does refer to route 536. If I recall correctly the combination of diagonal movement and the trail dropping down to the left makes it a little too long to do a yo-yo TR on route 535 with a 200 foot rope. Can you bring a 70 meter rope?

The base of the route is The High Peaks Trail, and there isn't a lot of width there other than the trail. Plus it stays shady much of the time because there are big rocks on both sides of the trail. So hanging out right at the base of the main face won't be ideal, but it won't be terrible either. On the other hand, there's more space, sun and views only a few feet north from the start of the 5.0 route.

If you're there on Saturday there's a very good chance I'll be walking by on my way to/from a new route we're thinking about starting in the area. Keep an eye out for a six foot tall old guy with a large and faded purple pack.

Beautiful - thanks!  You even answered a question I forgot to ask - which way to get there.

I'll be the pigtailed, blue-helmeted one with my new, pretty 70 meter rope.  ;-)

Should be a gorgeous day-

We climbed all day about 150 yards north of the Sponge (near Spike's Peak), but we didn't see you. Did you climb somewhere else?

F4?

Nope, yesterday I climbed with the Dawsons, in the sun (and with the son). Steve and Laura each placed their first bolts at Pinns (trip report coming).

Hiya Brad - we opted to stay local and just hiked Nisene.  Good option since the hubby ended up coming down with the creeping crud while were were out.   :-\

Although it looks like next weekend will be washed out which is a bummer.

Looking forward to your trip report!
