GGR Rain gauge and M&C login
« on: December 11, 2012, 05:09:14 PM »
I was just checkin' the GGR rain gauge and it shows almost an inch of rain yesterday. Is this totally whack?

I have been having a problem with the site kicking me out after brief periods of being logged in. I used to log in and it stayed indefinitely. The last few months, whenever I come back to the site I have to login again. Anyone else having this issue?

Where is GGR?

It's under the useful information and links sticky - if you go to the site and scroll all the way down it has a map link that shows it "Located at elevation 1960 feet in the SALINAS R basin. Latitude 36.532, Longitude -121.277."

If the green area they show on the map is the Monument it is between 2 and 3 miles west of the boundary - and about 10 miles almost due east of Gonzales.

So nothin'? I'm not sure I trust the GGR gauging station to show me what is actually happening with the Monument. Do Gavin and the other biologists have a rain gauge or gauges that are actually in the Monument?

Who's doin' what starting tomorrow? I'm giving my last final right now and need to celebrate with some mud n crud the next few days...

I usually call the visitor center and ask about rainfall. You only get this service certain hours of the day but the in person aspect has some good qualities.

The rain gauge data reactivated just after 3:00 today - it was sprinkling around 3:15 as we were driving out and coming down pretty good as we headed up 101. We saw Munge in the parking lot this morning and went our separate ways. KC and I headed back up for Beak Peak but got the heebie jeebies just past the outhouse when we thought about coming back down the slabby approach trail in the rain or worst case scenario getting to the top of Beak Peak or Ridge Crest Rock and having to down climb in the rain since neither has a summit anchor. Curses - foiled again. With no sun, chilly temps and no end in site, we opted for a long hike (can someone take my pack back to the car please?). Detoured slightly to recon Condor 70 and Hand Me Down and then took the Steep and Narrow all the way down to the Bench Trail and back around on Old Pinnacles. Spotted the Rook on our way down the valley. Yelled for Munge after making our way through the wet caves - he was on Simian and neither of us had any gas left to go have a chat. Two climbers were on the last pitch of Machete Direct. I could hear the Rock Nazi in my head "No climbing for you!"

looks like the gauge shows less than a tenth of an inch for yesterday but the showers were definitely enough to give the crags a good soaking. if today's weather down there is like ours currently it is too gloomy for any drying.

from the looks of the current NOAA forecast it looks like next weekend will suck too - guess we better find something else to do with our time :(

we saw horseshoe marks and several piles of poo on the High Peaks Trail yesterday. Do the rangers use horses?

I've seen NPS personnel with pack horses on the High Peaks Trail (from behind Discovery Wall to Scout Peak area) on multiple occasions.

If I recall, I've only seen them on weekdays though.

Appreciate it Brad. I figured they might use pack animals for things like trail maintenance.
