Paying it forward
« on: October 20, 2013, 09:11:07 AM »
Now that the parks are open again:

I hope I can make it through the gate. I hope to see my friend and feel the moss and choss under my fingertips and my toes. I hope the autobrecciated rhyolite is as pink as it has been in my dreams. I hope…I hope…

We took a couple Pinns initiates out today and serendipitously met up with some folks from Pacific Edge on the west side today. We met April and James at the gym last week. They had never led before and April had never climbed outside. They both stepped way out of their comfort zones and led climbs ranging from 5.5 to 5.9! We started at Passion Play Wall where James did his first lead and April did her first outdoor climb. We joined the PE folks at Destiny Wall. April did her first lead and then we all moved to the Flumes. I took another shot at Nipple and Knobs but came up short compared to my high point on the previous onsight attempt/leader fall 3 weeks ago. I managed to downclimb a couple moves and did a take from bolt 4 – I just wasn’t feeling it. I led Hunting Spiders to get my draws back and remove the screwlink I left on bolt five 3 weeks ago. Perfect weather and a good time was had by all. It was fun to hang out with folks from the gym – outside of the gym - and we figured it was about time we shared some of the great knowledge we’ve gained from the Masters and our adventures over the last 22 months.

James on his first lead - Big Bad West 5.5*

April on her first lead - Corona 5.6*

April belays James leading Tilting Terrace 5.8* while Mike follows JC’s lead on Hunting Spiders 5.7

April recovers after her 1st lead fall - Kibbles and Bits 5.9*

Nicely done J.C and K.C. I did some of that yesterday, and, bonus,  feel like I climbed really well myself too.

Today, however is a different story. I must have failed someone, somewhere and now I'm paying the price. I had to cancel with the climbing crew today and stick close to home; really close. Actually I haven't been able to get more than 20 feet from a toilet since 7:00 a.m. This isn't fun.

Thank Brad.
I was so happy to be back in the Monument that I didn't really care what we did - as long as we were climbing and having fun. It was pretty neat to share with the newcomers and watch them take on the challenge.
We couldn't believe there weren't more visitors on the trails and crags.

Hope whatever has latched on to you passes quickly. I've been holding off a cold for about 2 weeks now but it's more of a nuisance - kinda like rope drag. Probably what kept me from getting the redpoint on Nipples yesterday. I figure I can just keep trying it periodically from the ground up since Spiders gives me a workaround.
