Almost like being there
« on: January 27, 2020, 03:14:45 PM »
While in New York I thought it appropriate to check out Broadway.  I thought it would be nice to check out a show and while wandering around I came upon Lincoln Square.  There is a large sign that says Philharmonic Theatre.  I went in and check on availability of tickets.  The gal at the booth was about my age and we got to joking around a bit.  After poking around a bit she lets me know they just happen to have this one box seat that was up front and all the way to the side so it had and unobstructed view.  I said that I would take it.

So I got to see the New York Symphony play Dvorak's Symphony #9.   Now I am at work listening to it.   Really enjoyed this.
Also saw, Coney Island, Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Times Square, Staten Island Ferry, Riverside Park, Central Park, Bronx Park.  If you ever eat at the Park View Diner make sure you are hungry.

You are smooth.
That is something I would really enjoy, glad you were able to.

As I've always maintained, your facade (being mostly rural, almost redneck, and wild) has only a slight kernel of truth.

Glad you could take advantage of a great opportunity.

Did you visit all of those Burroughs via subway?  If so, impressive. Where did you stay?

I drove between Burroughs, I had a limited amount of time.  I was out in New Jersey and New York for a business trip and got out to New York City for the day.  It was a good fitness day as well because I probably walked about 15 miles.  I drove out there first thing in the morning from my hotel which was about a hour away.  Got home about 4:30 in the morning the next day.

If I get out there again I guess I will have to look at seeing what I can do via Subway and walking.  The subway option will take more planning.  I find walking fairly efficient plus it allows for spontaneous side trips and the occasion interesting trip down dark alleys.

EDIT:  I stayed about an hour west in New Jersey for the first week and north west near White Planes, NY the second week.

Driving outside of Manhattan is not too bad.  I think the traffic in San Francisco might be just as bad now.

I like walking there too.  Especially below Houston street.  The streets are in less of a grid pattern.

There is a documentary about a guy who is walking every street in every burrough.  I think it is on amazon. The guy has a

I think we all need blogs because we don't spend enough time online.

What was the craziest thing you saw?
Which Burrough is your current favorite?
Did you eat any pizza?
Was there something you ate that was better than pizza?

Did not see anything too crazy.  It is was more the conversations that got my attention.  At the diner the waitress cussed out a patron and it did not seem to bother either of them.  It seemed like something I would see in a television show about New York.  The same waitress would not look at me when taking my order but stared intently when asking how my meal was.  In the Bronx a guy walking toward me had that very typical old school walk where one step is normal and the other leg does kind of a dip with a jig.  Had not seen that in a really long time.  In Central park it was two gals having a conversation about The Bachelor.  Both had what I thought was a typical Manhattan accent and the conversation was dreamy and ended with a loud but girly laugh.

Difficult to pick a favorite, Brooklyn over by the coast was nice but had a hard edge.  Queens was definitely upscale and the Bronx had that rough edge.  I think I really like the area over by Rockaway beach.  For photography I think either Brooklyn or Bronx.  For living I would say Brooklyn over by Rockaway but I doubt that I could afford it.  I think my take is a bit different though since it was winter and a snow storm was blowing through so the roads and beaches were almost empty.   I think what surprised me is that you can drive 10 miles walk around or hit a coffee shop and there are people with a noticeably different accents.  Also, the sky scrapers are really tall.  I guess the one thing that caught my eye was the streets signs around Coney Island that said "No Standing".  New York with all the boroughs is also bigger than I thought.  Manhattan is big then 5 miles away is the financial district which is just as big.

I did not eat pizza, I had two meals, breakfast at the diner and then an appetizer before the show.  Next time out will definitely have pizza.  I did have pizza the one time I went to Chicago and it was very good and noticeably different than west coast pizza.  I got yelled at by the proprietor but I think everyone did.

Tarrytown is where I was at for work which is about an hour outside of New York is really nice.  It has a bit of a small town vibe, a bit upscale and has a lot of older homes with what I would call, kind of a New England look. Lots of history.
