It would be nice if we could get at least a couple of tents over there.

New, used, cash donation.  Give up beer for week and help a kid out.

I recommend ShelterBox.  It is an organization that I am familiar with and have donated to in the past.

A friend of my is really involved in the organization.  It supplies a little more gear than just a tent. These guys help in all kinds of disasters.  Please check it out.

THE AID WE DELIVER
The ShelterBox solution in disaster response is as simple as it is effective. We deliver the essentials people need to survive and begin to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of a disaster.

ShelterBox aid is tailored to a disaster but typically includes a disaster relief tent for a family, thermal blankets and groundsheets, water storage and purification equipment, solar lamps, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, mosquito nets and children’s activity pack.

A ShelterBox kit can be sponsored for US $1,000.  Do you think we can scratch together that amount for a box to send to Nepal?

My understanding that you don't get to specify where the kit is sent. You are notified when and where it's sent. Right now, donations done through this donation page is matched (by a charitable foundation). This donation goes to the general funds. My company also does corporate match. I hope they can stack.
Inch by inch, I will get there.

My friend Keith Henderson can arrange it so our box gets to Nepal. Anyone in?

Happy Friday Team,

A few new updates regarding our Nepal response. (Text in gray means no change since the previous update)

Situation Updates:
•         The scale of destruction across the Himalayan country of Nepal since Saturday’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake is immense.
•         Since then, several aftershocks have taken place, ranging from 5 to 6.7 in magnitude.
•         More than 7,500 people are reported to have been killed and at least 16,000 people have also been injured, although these figures are likely to rise.
•         Hospitals are being overwhelmed as more patients arrive and supplies run low.
•         8.1 million people are reported to be in need of humanitarian assistance.
•         Nepal’s prime minister Sushil Koirala said his government was doing all it could, but was overwhelmed.
•         With hundreds of thousands of people sleeping outdoors in makeshift shelters, thunderstorms forecast, mountain snows melting, and the monsoon season due, the growing risk of landslides and flash flooding will add to the challenges for rescue and relief teams.

Our Response:
•         Currently, there are 12 ShelterBox Response Team members working in Nepal.
•         The second chartered flight of aid arrived today.
•         The team in Kathmandu is meeting today with British Gurkhas to discuss potential partnerships for logistics and future distributions. They will be conducting a reconnaissance with a view to assisting in distributing 500 to 1,000 shelter kits. A team of two ShelterBox team members will also be traveling to a remote region to the north west of Kathmandu to carry out a similar reconnaissance with ACTED and WFP.
•         The team in Sindhupalchok is preparing to receive the next batch of aid once it has cleared customs in Kathmandu.
•         The teams remain in good spirits and are establishing good systems for efficiently processing aid through the airports, customs and onwards to the more remote locations for distribution.

I asked about a direct donation towards the Nepal effort has is the response I received from Keith.

You can request it and if  a direct fund is begun  your contribution will go into it (this was done for Haiti and Japan).  Way to look at it though is that stocks of boxes and tents we already had are going to Nepal already.  If we had to wait for funding to buy stock we would not be responding immediately.  It is a pay forward system necessary for us to react immediately.  Hope that makes sense.  Happy to talk about it if you want to give me a call as well.

This plan makes sense for fast response to major disasters. I'm in and will call you Aaron.

I donated the tent I lived in Tuolumne Meadows when I was on SAR.  What a great summer of climbing and nobody died!
