Subterranean Tango Anchors
« on: April 20, 2007, 12:45:32 AM »
[  for those of you just tuning in, this is a followup to http://www.mudncrud.com/mastersofmud/viewtopic.php?t=339&start=0  ]

I added the anchor to Subterranean / Terranean Tango.

I followed Tom Davis' requests since he has the first ascent and he gave me the ok.

It is a three bolt anchor with fixe sport anchors painted to hide.  It is hard to see from the trail, even when you know where it is.

I cleaned up the summit block single link anchor by cutting the chains back as far as possible and adding some beefy quicklinks.  Unfortunately, I wasn't sure what would be needed so I brought a lot of stuff and the quicklinks were not painted.  They are very very hard to see from the trail and you have to stand in just the right spot.

I will be back down there in a few weeks and I will prime and paint them at that time.

Lastly, I noticed that the paint came off of my chains on gorillas in the moss.  I had hand painted them and think that spray paint will last longer.  I will paint those at the same time.

Nice anchors! My only concern is how do they wear and how long will they last? I guess one would replace the whole unit??

We are using them at the Grotto (not cheap!) and they are pretty nice.

When are the Cantalope Death anchors get replaced??
I'm not worthy.

The anchors should last a long time as long as people top rope off their own gear and use the anchors to lower off (just like rap rings).

I figure that I'll keep an eye on them.  If they wear out too fast, I'm not going to use them again.  At $20 each hanger, an anchor gets expensive fast.  If they wear really quickly, I'll replace them with Mussy hooks (only $5 each).  Just cut the ring with some bolt cutters and use a quicklink and it's done.

Do you mean using the existing bolts and adding tow hooks?

If so, that sounds like a good idea.  We'd just have to watch them carefully.  With the tree in the way, people will probably just clip and lower (and never use their own gear).  They'd probably wear out pretty fast and people wouldn't even look very closely at them.

The CD bolts anc chains need to be replaced (my opinion). The rock around the base of the bolts has worn so the hangers are loose.

My choice would be a fat glue in. 1/2 thick  and a mussy hook would be nice.

Your "choice?" What, are you ordering from a menu? Take the initative and do it yourself. Maybe run it by the climbing community first.
