REMINDER: Climbing Advisories Begin In January
« on: December 16, 2011, 09:32:32 AM »
Hey All -

I just wanted to pass on a friendly reminder that the climbing advisories will be in effect starting a month from now. I will pass on the details to Mud, and he can update the current sticky to reflect the new year.

The initial advisories will be pretty much the same as last year, with a couple of things to note in particular:

- As was the case last year, I will have the advisories start the day AFTER the MLK weekend, on Tuesday, January 17th, to give folks one final chance to climb in areas on the West Side and in the High Peaks that will be effected by advisories. Nevertheless, if you notice any falcons stressing out at your presence - alarm-calling, diving at you, circling close to your position repeatedly, etc. - please try to move on to a route further away from them.

- Also consistent with last year, the areas south of the Reservoir - Frog, Hand, Gargoyle, Knuckle Ridge, etc. - will remain open, given that no falcon nesting has been observed in the area in the last 5 years (though of course this could change if the birds return to the area).

- Initially, Balconies and Citadel will be fully under advisories - due to 2 falcon pairs nesting at Balconies last year, and 1 pair nesting at Citadel - and Machete will be under partial advisory, as has been the case the last couple of years.

As usual, full details will be forthcoming. Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime and I'll do my best to respond. Thanks!
