Made the Jump
« on: May 07, 2009, 05:07:50 PM »
The family PC is on it's last legs. We've realized for a long time it needs to be replaced. Did it today. Brand new Mac coming. A terabyte of hard drive, four gigs of RAM. And it's a Mac. The whole computer is the 24 inch screen. No extra cables and crap. And did I mention it is a Mac? Plug it in and start using it.

I'm not terribly computer literate, although I've made big strides in the last decade. I've now used my Mac Powerbook for 5 years. Such a great tool. I've also used our PC here at home, and we use PC at the office. I can fairly say that I've used each type enough to have formed opinions about their relative utility. Using Mac is like belaying with a new, modern tube-type device. Using PC? Well, I guess the best analogy I can make is that it is like belaying with an old Figure 8. Figure 8s work, I've caught falls with them; but modern devices work so much better: light, powerful, elegant and efficient. Easy to use. Maybe the spread is wider? Maybe like using jumars as opposed to using prussick knots.

I think Katie is gonna have kittens about this. She loves the idea, loves Mac. It took some effort for us to persuade Vicki, but it took effort to persuade me too 5 years ago. Let's see what she thinks in a month.

Apple dropped the ball in one respect though. Our beautiful dog Madeleine is getting old enough that we're thinking about getting a second dog to keep her company. I asked my Apple representative if we should consider an I-Dog. Apparently they don't make them (yet).

Good for you Brad.

I'm a PC guy  Big Time.  Been hanging out with a guy that owns a skateboard business.  This guys is super smart in business, computers, IT, pretty much everything.  He has been showing me all of his hot mac stuff.  Swears he has saved a couple hundred grand in IT expenses over the years because he uses Macs.

Started getting excited when he showed me Unix on his machine.  Got really exicited when he started controlling his entire household's sound system from his iphone.

Can I switch?  We'll see... it would almost be like the Pope turning Muslim.
eow!

We'll wait and see IF you do the switch, how you like it. Most people I know who've switched would never go back.

I should add though that I think Microsoft Word and Excel (the guts of "Office") are pretty darn good software. And "everyone" uses them, so it is easy to exchange documents with it. Both serve us quite well in our office.

But for us dorks (current dad-label from 13 year old, kinda like it) the user friendly nature of Mac is incredible. Steve promised me when I got the Powerbook that using it would be very instinctive. Yeah right. But, holy wow, it was. So easy. I've never done or tried anything on it that it wouldn't walk me through. Contrast to my PC at work where, 3 times or so I've tried to watch news clips but it won't play them without whatever that software you need is. So I click on the buttons to try to install it and I end up in a complete miasma of crap. Never have gotten it to load, and my partner Scott has gone through the same thing. Neither one of us is particularly stupid, but neither of us is a computer geek either. In my experience this result is typical when using a PC. And very frustrating.

And too, Jeff the I-Phone is absolutely key. As I indicated above, my teenager thinks I am god's gift to nerds. This is a perfectly natural thing for a teen. She's smart and gregarious and loving. She does lots of family stuff with us and enjoys it. She's a happy and well adjusted person. But she thinks I am so yesterday. And, who knows, maybe she's right

Compare me though to my friend Steve. Steve's not her dad, but he's only a bit younger than I am. He's an old coot.  He's a dad too. He knows old music, not new music. He too has all the essential elements of Dorkdom. But in Katie's eyes he's way cool where I am not. The difference? He has an I-Phone. And he let's Katie and her friends play with it when we get together. So go toward the I-Phone. You're almost to that transitioning stage with Tessa: utmost hero to utmost dork. Save yourself now, while you still can; get one.

Not everyone uses MS Office! I hate that crap!

The only thing I've ever used Word for was writing resumes... I'm now using Adobe InDesign and converting to Pdf. So much easier to use, and it gives you such better control over the results. And you can use it for laying out things like guidebooks...  ;)

I was checking them out at Frys the other day. Pretty slick I must say. 24" is great for graphics. Unfortunatly, I need Office for work, so I'd have to see how the files convert. It would be nice to get one as well

That's like talking dirty for Mr Mud...Unix & Mac in the same sentence.

Yooohhoo Mr Mud....pull yer head out from that Unix box.

Brad, GOOD FOR YOU. I myself just 3 weeks ago bought a new slick little macbook and love the thing. I was born and raised on Apple products though (born and raised in Cupertino). Enjoy...my dad just got the same machine and loves it.

Yeah, we're planning on putting Office for Mac on this computer (for the reasons I listed above).

And here's the thing about Apple that I don't like: it's email program is great and easy to use. It includes a "junk" function by which you label incoming junk as just that. The software then labels all future incoming emails from the same source as junk and sends them straight to that folder. All but emails from Apple itself that is. You can drag ads from Apple to junk every time, but they never get catagorizzed that way in the future. Irritating.

Windoze 2008...
I just took this class on Windoze 2008 Server.  Made me realize just how much I have come to like UNIX.

Word oui, Framemaker, then save to pdf.

Nice and enjoy.  24" LCD's are the way to go.  I love the one I have at work.  It is a very nice size to work with.

What the hell have we gotten into? It is stunning. Our lives are chaos, confusion; accounts that have to be transferred, data to switch over. It is gorgeous. The girls harassing Vicki about what it will do and how - all while she's trying to absorb the change - and cook dinner. It is huge:

Now what?

My only real beef with Apple concerns these new keyboards... They suck! I want the older style (but it has to have USB 2 ports!) back.
