Slow Rides, 2009 Style
« on: June 15, 2009, 05:19:30 PM »
Did Redwood Gulch, down Highway 9, up Bohlman/On Orbit, down Montevina, up Black Road/Skyline, down Highway 9/Redwood Gulch/Stevens Canyon. 55 miles and about 6300 feet of climbing (all of which came in the first 36 miles. Excellent stuff, though at 4 hours, 57 minutes certainly not a fast ride!

Did another nice short hill loop on Saturday. This one was just a tad easier than the previous one. But I was crunched for time, since we were heading up to Folsom for a barbeque with friends.

My time on Montebello was 44:30, and was the first time I've done that hill in quite a few years (I think it's the first time I've done it since 2001 or so, on my very first road bike! That one had  a triple...). After cruising that, I added Redwood Gulch and Pierce/Mount Eden to get back to Joan's place. 40.5 miles, and perhaps 4200 feet of climbing...  :)

I Did a nice little 29 mile ride this afternoon. My plan was to do some hill repeats on the Calaveras Wall, but I ended up doing Sierra Road instead. It's so much fun in the sun!  ;)

Did Montebello for "lunch" today... 40:37, which is a new PR.  :)

I did east Alpine Road today... That's a fun little climb. ~16:30 for the climb from Portola Valley Road to the gate at the top. Then I headed up Joaquin Road (it's like a short section of the steep part of Bohlman!) and over the ridge and down Los Trancos Road (excellent road) and back to the Alpine Road.

Here's the route...

Here's tomorrow's route... I'll let y'all know how it goes on Alba! Bonny Doon is one of my all-time favorite climbs.  :)

Bonny Doon and Alba... Done and done! It was really really nice out there today.

Joan and I went for a swim at Cowells Beach with some of the people from our tri club. We did about 1.2 miles. I went without the wetsuit of course, just to slow myself down... ; ) Actually, there were some fast swimmers there!

After the swim, we went for a ride with the same people. They were just doing the Santa Cruz Triathlon course to get ready for that race in two weeks. Joan did that as well, plus a little easy cruising after that. I turned off on Bonny Doon Road and did my heinous 43 mile ride.

Boon Doon time was 27:50 to end of the harder climbing (about 3.5 miles) and 52:25 (7.4 miles with 2110 feet of climbing) to the intersection of Empire Grade and Ice Cream Grade. I then cruised down Felton-Empire Road and then up highway 9 to Brookdale; where Alba Road comes in.

Alba looks rather daunting when you first turn onto it! I was wondering if I was going to be able to make it. The first .75 miles is about like riding up the On Orbit portion of BOOB. Steep! But there's a "flat spot" not too far up there. It's probably 7 or 8 % but it feels so easy after the start! It's like that the whole way up. It'll be really steep for a bit and then level off a little. But it never goes too close to flat. The easiest part might be 5% for 10 yards!

All in all, I have to say that Alba is indeed slightly harder than BOOB, but only because it doesn't have any real rest in it. On Orbit at least has that short downhill...

My time for the 3.8 mile climb was 39:55; which should tell you a little... It's .4 miles shorter than BOOB and goes up 20 feet more...  ;)

Christmas ride was a blast...

I woke up at 3:40 so I could deliver Joan to Oakland Airport. Then I went back home and had more coffee while waiting for the sun to come up. At 8:00, I took off... It was pretty cold (35) when I left, but I was warm enough with leg warmers, arm warmers, vest and windproof gloves. It took me about 20 miles to really get warmed up, so it's a good thing I didn't hit Kings until mile 38!

I went out to the end of Canada Road, then up back through Woodside and up Kings Mountain. I stopped briefly for water and an outhouse stop at the top of 84, then I cruised down the west side. I did West Old La Honda for the first time. Great views on a lovely day! My time for the climb was around 17:30. Then I cruised down 84 and through Portola Valley on my way home.
