Let's see that bomber natural Pro at the Pinns!

I love all of the opportunities pinnacles gives you in the absence of bolts if you look!

This placement prevented the rope from running through the forrest of Oak on Toog's.  It was solid when I set it but only downward.  Later the partner had a laugh when they both fell out!  Can't complain, they did their job well.

I went through the trouble of riggin it, may as well snap a shot of it.

How about trees? Trees are "bomber?" Certainly we use them for natural pro all the time.

In December, 2007, Stacy and I did the Denny/Colliver route Leftover on Long's Folly. Getting to the first bolt requires climbing up an then traversing across a thin ledge. In doing so one's feet are about 7 feet off the ground. As I traversed this section I gently balanced my foot on a 2 1/2 inch diameter oak tree which grows out of the crack at the back of the ledge. I had no choice really, the tree was in a place where you had to weight it some to get by.

The result:

If you had told me before I fell that I could break this tree off "snap" like a toothpick, I'd have called you crazy. Yet off it broke. I teetered in place and then fell off, hitting the ground (in a grassy area) and then tumbling. All I suffered was a set of abrasions (some were pretty nasty). Stacy cleaned and bandaged them up.

A few months later I was able to laugh with Glen himself at what had happened to me.

OH yeah, trees are great for the Pro. OUCH Brad, That one looked good above where it was lodged in the crack.  I wonder how many falls have been taken on that tree on Rat Race?

A friend and partner were really late coming back from some FA work in shuteye.  i knew they were in the river canyon and it's like 40 min tops to get back to the camp.  Well in they stroll through the darkness both wide eyed and beaten.

On the lead my friend opted to downclimb due to lack of large protection.  Downaiding the crack was no problem, at the end when the crack petered out, there was a small bush.  The same type of bush we had been yarding on all over the approaches and for cleaning.  These things were bomber, well on the final 10 feet of downclimbing the friend grabbed the bush/root/tree etc and pop!  Inverted fall onto a 60 degree scree slope, luckily falling on the opposite side of another tree from where the belay was!  Stopping just before the big talus.  One tree ripped the other made a catch, pretty lucky huh?
