Fun Pinnacles Scrambles?
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:47:38 PM »
Hi folks - first time poster here.  I made my first & only trip to the Pinns about 12 months ago.  It was cold and rainy, I was hoping for snow, missed it by a day.  But still real cool, man.  Beautiful.

Being on my own and too wet anyway, I mostly stuck to the main trails and the climbers paths, wandered around the Balconies and the High Peaks.  I'm thinking of heading back there soon and wonder if there's any 2nd-3rd-4th stuff you might recommend.  Other than what I can gather from the current guide book.

The author of said work lists "Possibility Pinnacle (I know, 3rd class!)" in his "Top 10 Pinnacles Routes", I see:
http://www.mudncrud.com/forums/index.php?topic=86.msg741#msg741

"Good routes for a n00b" has some nice tips but most of this looks 5th class:
http://www.mudncrud.com/forums/index.php?topic=515.msg4697#msg4697

I'm thinking of stuff where I don't need a rope (well, a rappel would be okay).  Along the lines of fun Yosemite scrambles: Sierra Point, Sunnyside Bench, Unicorn or Cathedral Peaks.  Fun places to check out.

As well, you're welcome to list anywhere I shouldn't go, I don't want to tear stuff up.

Thanks!

I think Brad is probably the best source for this.  Here are a couple that I can think of off the top of my head.

Frog, CrudnMud, Gerties, Ridge Rock, back side of Tiburcio's, the hike to the top of the balconies is worth it, Knuckle Ridge (part of it anyway), Burgandy Dome,

Brad what is the name of that easy dome in the High Peaks with the good view?

The easy one with a good view is Possibility Pinnacle, which was already mentioned. I like easy scrambles with nice views. Solitude is a pleasant extra. I would highly recommend any of the easy Crowley Towers routes, you'll never see another person in a very cool part of the Monument. And likewise with the easy routes on and near Squareblock Rock in the High Peaks.

Hey guys -

Thanks a ton!  That's a great start and probably plenty for a long weekend.  Keep them coming, if you wish;  I'll look this stuff up and maybe pepper you with a couple more questions.

Forgot to mention, here are some shots from my trip last December.  For what it's worth - the light was pretty dreadful.  Feel free to repurpose if anything is useful:

I'm honored by your responses. And not adverse to 5th class if the weather permits and any one may be interested, perhaps weekend after next; forgive my noobness. Thanks again.

Compared to what?

Bratton, it's Carpet Cleaner, not Carpet Crawler. Maybe you shoulda been a college professor, or some other profession reserved for forgetful minds. Sheesh.

QITNL, the hike out to Squareblock is pretty brushy at first, but I think it is a pretty cool place. The third class route up the back of the rock is a huge chimney - until you emerge on top to wonderful views.

Ya, ya, Carpet Cleaner, Crawler, what's the difference. It's close enough.

I call it selective memory. It's handy for forgetting the shivering I did last weekend.

Shivered....you looked so warm in the sun! Are you saying that was an OLD picture? When did you turn into a non-camera guy. Take some pictures of your partners for crying out loud. Pay it back. We're all getting sick of staring at your ass:-)

Dude, that's an old picture. There was no sun on Sunday.

QITNL,

I'm currently nursing a blown A2 pulley in my hand, so if your looking for a scrambling partner or low class 5 stuff, I'm game. I am pretty familiar with all the climbing areas so let me know if your game.

Hey and thanks again for the advice -

Here are some pictures from my first couple of days last weekend before I met the gang at Crowley Towers.
http://www.qitnl.com/main.php?g2_itemId=7850
The regulars should recognize most of this stuff.  If there's anything here you can use for tracing routes, etc., it's all yours.

Most of the shots are only from on-trail or slightly off.  I wandered around the reservoir, snapped some guys on one of the Sisters and headed up to the Anvil before the first night drew to a close.  The next day I wandered around the High Peaks.  The ridge from Scout Peak to Goat Rock - including the above-mentioned Possibility Pinnacle and a few of the other features - was a lot of fun.

I spied a lot of other areas and approaches I want to hit next time I'm back on my own. But for my next visit I hope to return with a rope and a friend.  The Pinns are freaking awesome and Brad's guide is very nicely done; I scanned his maps which made a good pocket guide.  Thanks - Joe
