Man, no kidding.  I was working a gig in san carlos, had to load the truck in the monsoon!

I had my expensive but "got it on the cheap" Mountain Hardware shell on.  Needless to say it kept me dry for all of 10 minutes. Of course I was in a waterfall but nevertheless whats the deal with jackets these days?

I want a bombproof, heavy weather shell.  What do you guys use?  Nothing on the market from Arcteryx, millet, MTN hrdw, patagonia etc is worth a shite.  My cheap Helly Hansen is at least waterproof, and Yellow to boot.

So what do the mudrats use when storm rolls in?

are you getting saturated on the DWR nylon part, or actual leaking thru the taped seams on the mhdware?

My Lowe Triple Point Ceramic finally after 15 years succummed to the grim reaper. The Ceramic lining fell apart in a spectacular failure. I kept wondering why am I getting wet. THen I checked in side. I was going to send it back to Lowe...but I think they stopped distributing thier clothing in the US...I think.

But alas I have a marmot 3ply gtx ready to take over.

I really don't have rain jacket per say. Usually a scholler jacket and I keep moving.

For sedentary, or walking in the monsoon...........a PVC jacket can't be beat. Cheap too.

I still have my Eastern Mountain Sports Gore-Tex (yellow) shell. A few weeks ago when the rain was coming down really hard and the wind was blowing it sideways, my pants were completely soaked just from walking to the office from the parking lot, but everything covered by the jacket was bone dry.

However, it is a little bulky - not an ideal climbing jacket (unless your ice climbing on dripping ice). I probably could have used it for the moss monster though...

All I could see was the saturation everywhere but the tape seams.  like it was meant to perform that way.  I know it's breathable but whats the point of taping when the fabric/gore saturates on all of the large panels?

I'm sticking to the pvc for the big jobs.

Whats this ceramic thing Lowe stumbled upon?

so saturation on the inside, not just on the outside with clammy feeling on inside?

if you are already hip to where I'm going with this, disregard. :)

Sounds like the difference between hard and soft porn.

Oh about 15yrs ago they came up with thier own cheaper solution to goretex.

Here is the poop from thier website:

Our Triplepoint® are durable, waterproof, windproof and very breathable. Developed over 15 years and tested by climbers, backpackers and athletes in the world’s wildest places. Triplepoint fabrics are guaranteed to keep you dry and comfortable.
We have developed our Triplepoint® technologies to give the best combination of breathability, durability and waterproof performance depending on your outdoor activity.

Triplepoint® XC uses a PU twin-coating technology which “locks” into the outer face fabric fi bers, giving maximum durability. 2.5 layer fabrics feature a raised pattern on the inside, protecting the membrane while making the fabric lighter and more compressible. The complex coating structure repels exterior water, allowing water vapor to escape through microscopic pores.

Oddly, they don't distribute in the US anymore.....
