High Exposure
« on: June 16, 2010, 06:56:01 AM »
Hey Guys,
I am on a trip to see family and friends here in New York, and got a few hours free to do some climbing at the Gunks. My brother and I were lucky to basically walk up and do High Exposure (5.6) on a Tuesday afternoon in 70 degree temps and low humidity, a rare summer day indeed!

For those who haven't done it, High E is 2 pitches, the first a steep 5.4, best run out with long runners, ending on a huge ledge with incredible views. The second skirts a small roof and a few overhanging moves lead to steep terrain on huge jugs to the top. I couldn't help but to climb slowly and look around and just enjoy the location and quality of climbing. Here are a few pics that don't do it justice:

The Gunks are rad!!! (except for the camping and having to display your pass at all times) - highly recommend staying at the New Paltz Hostel

I never got a chance to do High E (always crowded when I went there), but I love the rock there. I've done a 25 foot overhanging roof that went at 5.5 there - bucket city!!! Bring your tri-cams!!! (or booty claim the ones that the n00bs get stuck).

Munge, I haven't seen the pictorial book, but would love to check it out. We had an old school book, with written descriptions and lines on photos in the back. I was stoked just to find the base of High E... and yes, I am sure that's the one we did!

Ubergoober, you're right about the pass (I didn't get to try the camping scene, but 20 sites sounds ridiculously inadequate http://www.mohonkpreserve.org/index.php?climb). Also, this was the first time I've had to pay extra to climb - The Mohonk Preserve is a private nonprofit climbing area, and the "hiking" pass is $10/day and the climbing pass is $15. Very different that the public land areas I am used to frequenting, where everyone is charged the same.

Anyone else been somewhere they charge differently for climbing, besides the gym?

Garage sessions at my house. Those who actually climb and not sit around to just shoot the shit are allowed to come empty handed, otherwise you must bring beer or food.  >:D

Jake, I did "High E" back in 2003, with Ron Skelton. When we finished the route we just looked at each other and laughed. One of the 25 best routes I've done in my life. Him too. Glad you got on it too.

Isn't there a passage somewhere that says something about not being sheep?

Since when did you become a literary guy? Have you been reading since you retired from climbing?

Dr. Seuss,
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

To further paraphrase Dr Seuss:

And today the Great [Dennis Erik], that Marvelous he
