This just pissed me off.  Any asshole that arrests a 91 year old lady should be shot.  I don't care if he likes her politics or not.  And, if a recruit cannot step over an old lady he should not be in the fuggin Army.

A group of women who call themselves the "Granny Peace Brigade" have gone on trial in New York for their protest against the Iraq war.

The women, aged between 50 and 91, were charged with disorderly conduct after demonstrating outside a military recruitment centre.

Their supporters outside the courthouse included leading anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, whose son died in Iraq.

The 18 women, many of whom are grandmothers, have pleaded not guilty.

"Coming to this damn court is nothing compared to what is happening to people in Iraq," said Marie Runyon, aged 91 and the oldest member of the group.

'Larger purpose'

None of the women has grandchildren serving in the US military.

But Joe Wile, co-founder of the group, said that was beside the point.

We should be praising these grandmothers, not prosecuting them

Norman Siegel,

Defence lawyer

"We're here for a larger purpose," said the 74-year-old.

"We feel extremely heartbroken for all the young kids, American and Iraqi, who are dying in this war."

The women were arrested on 17 October 17 last year after they protested outside a US military recruitment centre in Times Square, New York.

They had wanted to enlist, but found the door locked and sat down in front of the building.

Prosecutors say this prevented people from entering or leaving the centre and obstructed pedestrian traffic. They also say the women refused to disperse as ordered.

The women have been charged on two counts of disorderly conduct.

'Patriotic protest'

Noted civil rights lawyer Norman Siegel is defending the women in court.

"We should be praising these grandmothers, not prosecuting them," Mr Siegel said.

He told the court that the women had not broken any laws and that their protest was "respectful, orderly, justified and patriotic".

Ms Sheehan, who was supporting the woman outside the Manhattan Criminal Court, is famous for setting up camp outside President Bush's Texas ranch to demand a meeting with him.

"When lovely women like these grannies are punished for trying to save lives, our country is in a mess," she said.
I'm who i am.

That is a pretty stupid statement. If she was breaking the law she needed to be arrested. Maybe not thrown in a cell, but arrested, cited, and released on her promise to appear in court. The stupid old hag refused an order to disperse and basically thumbed her nose at the officers. Why should she get away with that? They knew the rules. If they were anti-abortion protestors blocking the entrance to an abortion clinic, should she have been arrested then? You bet! It had notrhing to do with her politics or anything else. She would have been arrestedif she was doing the same thing insupport of the war.

Mr Mud, you sounded real stupid in that post. You might want to delete it.

P.S. I arrested an 85 year-old grandma once, next time you see me at the Pinns, bring your gun and shoot me.

DES, I kinda agree with Jody. If they're breaking the law, consequences are consequences. Plus, she (they) seemed to be engaged in civil disobedience. Usually the point of civil disobedience is to make a statement, to call attention to yourself, often by being arrested. So, in a way, the cops were helping her achieve her goal. And I suggest that you not bring your gun(s) to Pinns.

I suppose that statement was stupid and sophomoric.  However, I will say this.  Yes the 91 year old woman in question was technically breaking the law, but I do not think she should have been arrested.  I guess I am just old fashioned.  Plus, I think my Grandmother would kick my ass for arresting an old lady for blocking an entry into a recruiting station.  I figure if the kids cannot get past a 90 year old lady to sign up, then they should not be out running around trying to defend this country.  Normally I just half ignore most the news, that is why I tossed my tv, but this one just chaffed my hide.

My question is...did they take her into the cell and beat her with rubber hoses?

Damn...I just can't seem to stop myself from dragging these posts into the dirt.

Brad, you are right, the officers were really helping them achieve their goal.

Mr Mud, you can't start letting people off based on their age...where do you draw the line? 85? 70? You HAVE to base it on the circumstances and not let emotions change how you do the job. Should I have let the 85 year old go because of her age but arrested you just because you were younger? I know it is a commonly held belief that gorgeous women get verbal warnings all the time...not so with me. I figure they have been getting breaks their whole life anyway. Get my drift?

I think old people have earned some stripes.  I do think that older people should be given a bit more leeway<sp> in life.  In general , I think old people are not treated with the respect that they deserve.   I will never forget that cop I had the encounter with when I was a kid that had already busted me a couple of times for speeding on my bicylce.  his quote " Don't make me have to give you a ticket".  again I am a bit old fashioned and for the most part grew up in small towns.

I hear what you are saying. I grew up in very small communities. LOL! I was stopped for speeding on my bicycle also.

Anyway, I don't think old people in general get the respect they deserve, you are correct. However, is an elderly person thumbing their nose at the law deserving of that respect? I think not. An 85 year old drunk grandma can kill your family just as easily as someone half her age.
